Special UPDATE: With the return of Gay Marriage as a big issue I’m bumping this post from my first month of blogging to the top. I think the points within concerning Gay Marriage are just as valid two years later and as the blog was only a month old it got very little play. So I present my blast from the past, my very first post on the subject of Gay Marriage.

I’m am constantly amazed at the lack of memory in this country, it might have to do with the lack of knowledge of history in this country. As evidence I quote Richard Cohen today:

It’s for the rest of us, it’s time for Festivus

Today is Festivus a “holiday” that was made popular via the TV show Seinfeld but whose origins actually slightly predate the more popular but just as invented Kwanzza.

I find it kind of funny that this holiday is actually celebrated but to each his own, (one of my wife’s co-workers actually gave a miniature Festivus pole to a co-worker last year). I will be taking part in a feat of strength later today trying to cut through the rock hard snowbank in front to clear some parking spaces. As for the airing of grievances, I have teenagers, every day is for the airing of grievances.

You can order your Milwaukee made (A city known for its Very High Strength to Weight Ratio) Festivus poles here, Amazon is currently out.

If you celebrate this holiday, have a happy and joyous Festivus. If not then have a nice day.

The Answer is no

Glenn Reynolds asks the following question:

The real question, given the way the press covered for John Edwards, Barack Obama, et al. is whether the press would cover a Watergate if it happened under a Democratic administration.

The answer is no and Ann Coulter gives some examples:

She complained that we didn’t have enough “Arabic translators” in Afghanistan — not realizing the natives don’t speak Arabic in Afghanistan, but rather a variety of regional dialects, the most common of which is Pashtun.

Speaking to military veterans one time, Palin said, “Our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today.”

She bragged about passing a law regulating the nuclear industry that it turned out never became a law at all.

Some days Palin said Venezuela’s dictator Hugo Chavez should suffer “regional isolation” — but then on others she’d say she supported the president’s meeting with Chavez.

She told one audience about recent tornados in Kansas that had killed 10,000 people. In fact, a dozen people were killed in the tornados.

She referred to the “57 states” that make up the U.S.

Speaking of her eldest daughter’s pregnancy, she said Bristol was being “punished” with a baby.

As you probably know — or guessed by now — none of these gaffes were uttered by Palin. They are all Obama gaffes. Luckily, he made them to a star-struck press that managed not to ask him a difficult question for two years.

And I’ve already dealt with the Caroline vs Sarah business today.

As long as the press sees themselves as advocates rather than as reporters of facts this won’t change and I see no indication or reason for this to happen anytime soon.

Happy Hanukkah to all

Tonight begins the 8 days of Hanukkah.

For those who don’t know it is celebrating the purification of the temple after it had been defiled by their foes, you can find the longer story in the 1 Maccabees 4:35-59 the meat and potatoes of it are here:

On the anniversary of the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it, on that very day it was reconsecrated with songs, harps, flutes, and cymbals. All the people prostrated themselves and adored and praised Heaven, who had given them success. For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar and joyfully offered holocausts and sacrifices of deliverance and praise. They ornamented the facade of the temple with gold crowns and shields; they repaired the gates and the priests’ chambers and furnished them with doors. There was great joy among the people now that the disgrace of the Gentiles was removed. Then Judas and his brothers and the entire congregation of Israel decreed that the days of the dedication of the altar should be observed with joy and gladness on the anniversary every year for eight days, from the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev.

To all those who celebrate it, a Happy and Holy Hanukkah and to those who do not, Have a nice week.

Let me give a shout out to the old HiWired company in closing, every year we would have a greeting for Christmas, and Hanukkah on the blog. It unabashedly acknowledged the religious nature of these days. It spoke very well of the company that they were not afraid to acknowledge religious holidays and I take my hat off to them.
