The Swiss Polanski countdown…

concerning bail and initial release should end sometime this week:

The Swiss Justice Ministry says it will decide this week whether to grant a request from Roman Polanski to be released from prison.

Ministry spokesman Folco Galli says the appeal by Polanski’s legal team is separate from a court case it filed last week that also seeks Polanski’s freedom, possibly on bail or under house arrest in Switzerland.

Simple logic should preclude any kind of release as he does have a history of flight.

The story would suggest that the Swiss are unlikely to give him bail but after what I’ve seen this week I’m not taking any bets either way.

If I’m Hollywood I really want this to go away as soon as possible, I don’t think they want more Hitchens articles like this:

Once you begin to notice that special set of ethics known as Hollywood exceptionalism, you may find yourself seeing it everywhere. In a recent book titled We’ll Be Here for the Rest of Our Lives (and enticingly subtitled A Swingin’ Showbiz Saga), late-night music maestro Paul Shaffer feels that he perhaps ought to say something about Phil Spector’s conviction for the murder of another human being whose name most people can’t remember. So he does say something. “I regret all the tragedy that has surrounded Phil in recent years,” is what he chooses to say. Not really even a try, let alone a nice try.

He exposes the dirty little secret that the outrage of Hollywood’s reaction to Polanski is that their reaction is not outrageous by Hollywood standards.

Update: No Bail for you!

So Michael Moore’s movie isn’t selling in the US

That’s not where it’s designed to sell. It will do a fair amount of business overseas.

Its primary job is to generate buzz to keep him on the personal gravy train, to keep him invited here there and everywhere.

Moore is set and he knows he is set, so he makes the movies he wants to make. There’s nothing wrong with that, after all that is Capitalism for you.

IT IS A BEAR!

You don’t keep it as a pet.

Authorities in northeastern Pennsylvania say a woman was killed by her pet black bear as she cleaned its cage.

State police say 37-year-old Kelly Ann Walz was mauled to death Sunday evening by the 350-pound bear.

I’ll say it again we need more Sgt. Garcia and less Pam Anderson on this stuff.

Yes there was a time when Disney said it was OK to shoot a bear.

Hey I LIKE Zorro so I’ll push it when I can.

Here come the flea markets

While Rachel Maddow was exciting Charles into his impersonation of the Ecstasy of St. Therese; LGF2 noted one more sign of an economy that isn’t moving as it did a mere 10 months ago:

They cashed out retirement funds to build their business during the 2008 presidential campaign. Now they have 3,000 jack-in-the-boxes with smiling Barack Obama puppets inside — all sitting in a California warehouse, waiting to be sprung open for $29.95 apiece.

For Barack-in-the-Box creator Heather Courtney and her husband, David Manzo, the Obamamania that drove sales so fast they could barely keep up during the inauguration is over now. Sales have slowed to a “sporadic drizzle,” the 36-year-old artist said, in part because the president just isn’t as popular.

And that’s just one product. In a few years flea markets will be flooded with junk like this.
