The Wisdom of the old Barber Shop

Bob’s Barber shop has been in business in Fitchburg for almost as long as I’ve been alive.

Stopped by the next day to take a friend of mine for a haircut so I asked about the Healthcare bill and what people thought.

You will always find common sense in a barber shop.

This is Sal’s Pizza in Fitchburg, part of the Sal’s pizza franchise. It is owned by two local guys Frank and Ken.

This is Sal’s Pizza in Leominster, the city next to Fitchburg, part of the same franchise and owned by the same local men.

These is a Pizza from Sal’s in Fitchburg. Looks good

This is Pizza from Sal’s Pizza in Leominster. Looks just as good.

The pizza is cooked the same way using the same ingredients and sells for the same price in both Cities. Here is how you make a Sal’s Pizza from the Start…

What is the difference?

In Leominster the electric bill comes from National Grid. When the bill comes in Frank & Ken pay it as part of his cost of doing business.

In Fitchburg the electric bill comes from Unitil. Although there is less machinery in Fitchburg and the leave less lights on at night, the bill is on average $800 higher a month. Since the pizza price is the same they eat the price difference so you don’t have to pay it.

This is a house in sight of Sal’s in Fitchburg right over the city line. If Frank and Ken close their Fitchburg Location and move their business next door to that house, they will instantly save $10,000 a year.

Not even 100 yards away

I would be very interested in having any person in Fitchburg’s city government or at Unitil explain to me why any sane person would consider opening on the Fitchburg side of the line when this is true. I would also like to know why back when Fitchburg Gas and Electric was our utility, this was not the case.

I’m all ears guys.

…I was very concerned about the election because of then candidate’s Obama’s promises concerning the war. So concerned that I actually showed up at the polling station, (the same spot where Stacy and I interviewed voters in January) with a McCain Palin sign first thing in the morning and stayed there for most of the day. It being Massachusetts 15 months BSB (Before Scott Brown) there was no organized effort, I just kinda did it on my own.

You’ve never seen surprise on peoples faces like you saw when they turned into the lot to see that McCain/Palin sign. I got quite a few thumbs up and at least one “you’ve got to be kidding” from people, but the end result was within two hours a lady came down to hold an Obama/Biden sign to counter me. (We chatted and have run into each other on at various city events since then becoming friends. She is widowed to a person who was quite active in the democratic party and has stayed involved).

I stayed after she left and then a friend of mine who came to vote, saw me, took my extra sign and held it as well.

Who knew we were 14 months ahead of our time in the state?

Q: What is the best way to keep a marriage going strong?

Some shops have bargain flowers but the place where I go when I have the spontaneous urge to buy is ZuZu’s Petals on Summer Street in Fitchburg.

Hey it is going to be 22 years next month I must be doing something right.

Oh and if you mention this blog post they will give you 10% off for a limited time.

So get her flowers NOW!, Don’t wait for the birthday, the anniversary or when you screw up.
