You are going to die of something

Yesterday I visited old Alfred who just came back from the hospital. I’d never been in his house before but saw him there daily as its next door to the Catholic grammar school that my boys, I and all my family went to since 55. He’s been in that house since the 40’s

The steps were solid stone 3′ x 2′ x 1′ The door was the old green door of my grandmother’s house, even the same type of paint. The chairs and tables were the same thing I used to see in her house. The stove had to be at least 70 years old and I think I’m underestimating it.

Alfred is 96 years old (will be 97 this year), he grew up on the street as my mother who he still calls “kid” (she will be 85 this year) We talked for a while and he talked about how as a kid he worked like a dog from sunrise to sunset, feeding the chickens, milking the cows, doing chores constantly.

He comes to mind today when I saw the doctor on Morning Joe complain about McDonalds, soda etc etc etc. She was stating how we should eat better, exercise more and get rid of the electronics, no TV no Computer yada yada yada…

She is correct about the health benefits and all that but the thing that really jars me is her objection to cheap plentiful food.

Any study of human history will show you that until the 20th century the specter of starvation and struggling to be able to feed a family was the norm of human existence. Anyone who lived through the depression knew how had it was to feed a family. Alfred’s his father and his family didn’t work like dogs because they wanted to, they did because they had to.

In a large chunk of the world the problem still remains and tens of millions face the scourge of hunger, not US food stamp hunger but African, Asian and South American no food to eat no clean water hunger. In human history that was and for a huge chunk of the world it still IS the NORM.

Thank God for a place where a person can eat and be full for less than the price of one hour of labor of the lowest paid person. You can make fun of McDonalds BK and the rest you can critique Chinese buffets, processed foods, genetically modified food etc etc etc, but these have helped to reverse the equation of human history and misery.

Dinesh D’Souza asked this question of an acquaintance of his “Why are you so eager to come to America?” He replied, “I really want to live in a country where the poor people are fat.”

We will all die of something someday but thanks to this modern world if you are in the US it won’t be of hunger. If one of our biggest problems is too much to eat they we should be damn grateful.

Pure Grain has a bit of a kick

Back from the party, a lovely gathering at the home of a very liberal friend of mine.

It is always important to remember that politics are politics but friendship trumps it.

If you are a fan of offbeat radio and a little video might I suggest the WDOA blog here. It isn’t my scene but it might be yours.

Was offered spiked eggnog. It had a bit of a kick I didn’t care for the taste, never been an eggnog guy but the wife liked it.

The kick came from 190 proof grain alcohol. I tried it straight and found it much better than the eggnog. Tasted kinda like Anisette to me but It’s not something I’d have again. Sort of like when I tried Mead at Steve’s place except it tasted better.

Given the choice I’d much rather have Lambrusco any day.

Well today from Netflix the first cd from season 7 of Red Dwarf. It is an excellent choice for a Chinese home picnic.

Very simple instructions for said picnic:

  • Clear the den floor
  • Lay down a blanket
  • Order from Dragon Express
  • And eat it on the blanket with either a good movie or a fun TV series on the set.

I must confess I am a sucker for Ace Rimmer and any situation when Nazi’s are getting beaten up.

Liveblogging party prep

8:05 a.m. The wife is approaching panic mode as the smoke detector battery issue has been declared irrelevant.

8:07 a.m. dressed and off to straighten the dining room

8:17 a.m. Shoes and Mouthwash are being placed out of view. God forbid that any guest know that we have any of either. My Fedoras have been exiled into the upstairs bathroom.

8:20 a.m My nephew once told me that age 15 was the year when teenagers are at their greatest pain-in-the-neck stage. My youngest is doing his best to confirm this today.

8:25 a.m. In fairness to the wife she was up till midnight baking cookies and has already done dishes, cut fruit and will shortly be making those awesome Chicken Wings, how she keeps up on this is almost beyond me.

8:32 a.m. Already found an install cd for Works, my missing thumb drive and a piece to the AH game Banzai that was missing.

8:38 a.m. The Bill-vase is now out of sight. Yes I keep my current bills in a vase. Do you have a problem with that?

8:55 a.m. Found the missing Illinois coin the 50 state set is now complete, but the wife’s arm brace is missing.

8:58 a.m Off to the store to buy the list of stuff, will the vacuuming and the sweeping be done when I get back, knowing my boys I wouldn’t bet big money on it.

9:47 a.m. Back from the store two interesting things, Hannafords is already putting out its Valentine’s day displays. Kappy’s not only carries both the Chivas Royal Salute 21 year old scotch but their 25 year old variety. I’ll have to tell Steve about their large microbrew selection as well, but the big thing is they actually had a brand of Lambrusco other than Rinuite. Its the first time I’ve seen another in a local store in decades. The brand is Canei and I’ll let you know if its any good later in the day. The Wine Cask blog seems to like it.

10:00 a.m T-4 hours till the doors open. The unplowed street is full of cars, apparently the Jehovah Witness’ who live across the street (very nice people) are holding some kind of service. If it isn’t over by 1:30 my wife parking will be at a premium on the road. Hope the wife doesn’t look out the door.

10:04 a.m. Vacuuming is done. Youngest son denies that the live-blogging had anything to do with it.

10:52 a.m. Mom is feeling well enough to come, she tells me since Christmas a flock of 21 geese have been hanging out at her house. Aunt Lucy likely will not make it but at 87 years old that isn’t but she did still walk down the road for her newspaper.

10:55 a.m. The awesome wings with the brown sugar and the soy sauce are now in preparation. Lasagna #1 is about to go into the oven. My sister in law Joyce dropped one during an open house several years ago. It gave us a reason to get rid of the crappy rug in the dining room.

10:59 a.m. Irish Creme found in the house. One less item off the list of booze to byo.

11:01 a.m. T-3 hours and counting. The back porch remains at about 42 degrees and has become the backup fridge of the house. Apparently according to the wife Perdue doesn’t puck their wings like they used to.

11:30 a.m. Because of an odd design and a bad move by my son I spent 30 min trying to get a curtain up without becoming eligible for this year’s Darwin awards. There is a sheer drop of one floor beneath one of his windows and he managed to lose the curtain off of it.

Noon t-2 hours: The little stuff is becoming a real problem the boys are needing some heavy motivating and the cars from the service across the street are still there. Wife still hasn’t noticed them.

12:15 p.m.  Cookies are on display
cookies

12:30 p.m. The Booze is ready had to play with the images slightly
booze

12:52 p.m. The youngest has decided to air out his room, likely not a bad idea, the Lasagna is taking an inordinate amount of time to finish, it is delaying the wings trip to the oven.

1:11 p.m. Who the hell is Matt Smith? Apparently he will be the 11th Doctor.

1:20 p.m. Lasagna #1 is out and Wings are in. Since the wings need a lot of time that means Lasagna #2 will go in during the party proper.

Chicken Wings in Lasagna out.

Chicken Wings in Lasagna out.

1:25 p.m. The wife is taking a break and has informed me there will be NO pictures of her on any liveblog of the party.

1:26 p.m. One might ask why bother liveblogging this? It occurs to me that lots of people liveblog big events but something like this is something that everyone does and can relate to the work involved in doing it.

1:30 p.m. The BBC has updated its Dr. Who page. Combom has not reaction other than congratulations.

1:32 p.m. There are already 200+ news articles on this story according to Google, and the blogs must be going nuts. Who wants to bet how long it will take him to become the top entry in google for Matt Smith?

1:35 p.m. All the prep seems to be done except for the moving of a vacuum and the spreading of some ice melt. Lets get ready to RUMBLE.

1:57 p.m. Front door is wrapped we are as ready as we are going to be.
