My thoughts on yesterday’s shooting

Some thoughts on yesterday’s events.

Apparently the left’s degree of hate is so large and their sense of honor so non-existent that the death of a 8-year-old girl and a federal judge is just another club to hit republicans in general and Sarah Palin in particular.

Listening to CSPAN this morning the template has already been made and it will be used against talk radio, the Tea Party etc. Facts be damned. What despicable people.

Looking at this analytically it is 30+ years since a member of congress was slain (the Jim Jones situation) and the last time a congressman was shot was back in the 30’s and that was an era when gun control was almost unheard of. The risk of this type of thing is a lot less than people think.

There are many basic responsibilities and duties of being a member of congress. Meeting with the people you represent constituents one of them. There is also a degree of risk inherent in being a public figure. I would remind every single member of congress that every single one of them begged the people for this job. There is nothing wrong with being careful but if you choose to use this as an excuse to dodge those you represent than you need to resign now.

As it has been said by Rahm Emanuel , never let a crisis go to waste: Expect people some to use this to ban guns and to stifle debate. I think this is a simple reality and complaining about it isn’t going to help, all one can do is call them out on it.

I think it is a huge mistake to make this shooter a public figure and to promote his tweets and youtube videos. That is the easiest way to promote this as a dramatic way out for the next loon.

I hate to say but looking at CSPAN this morning with Bill Press I have to conclude Glenn Reynolds is on the money with this:

As with Mike Bloomberg’s immediate effort to blame the Times Square bombing attempt on the Tea Party, this swift reaction betrays their hope for an issue that could save Obama by defaming his opposition. It also demonstrates that all their “have you no decency?” talk is a sham, since when push comes to shove, they have no decency themselves. Just desperate blood libels.

How many of our rights are we going to choose to surrender in order to make people think they are absolutely safe?

Steve Den Bestie wrote about the fog of news yesterday’s events were a perfect example of this.

Anyone who thinks that the tens of thousands of people praying for Gabrielle Giffords did not make a difference in her survival is in denial.

This is also a testament to medical science and to the team that saved her life, sometimes we overestimate the power of medical science but it is a really amazing just how far we have come.

The two statements above aren’t mutually exclusive.

And it’s an odd coincidence that yesterday morning I scheduled a post of my book reviews of a volume called Bloody Crimes dealing with Lincoln’s assassination and the attempt to capture Jeff Davis.

Oh BTW In comments I think I misinterpreted Chris’ critique, he didn’t think I was blaming atheism but didn’t like the line concerning the connection between the very unlikely survival and condition of a person shot through the brain and the spontaneous prayer of tens of thousands. I think the connection is no coincidence. To understand my thinking further I would suggest this post from March.

I guess the dirty little secret about the left and ROTC is out

If you only listen to the MSM you might not realize that long before anyone was talking about open homosexuality in the military universities on the left were banning ROTC. Those on the left used DADT as a convenient mask to justify such bans on grounds other than “I hate the US military” In the Washington Post today Colman McCarthy takes the mask of outrage off and puts the face of the left out there for all to see:

It should not be forgotten that schools have legitimate and moral reasons for keeping the military at bay, regardless of the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” They can stand with those who for reasons of conscience reject military solutions to conflicts.

Yeah I’m sure the British would have given us independence without a fight, the slaveholders would have freed their slaves without a battle, Saddam would have left Kuwait in his own good time, the North Koreans really weren’t planning to say in the south and of course there’s the guy with the silly mustache would have gotten sick of Paris or at least run out of Jews to kill.

The kicker however is this:

I admire those who join armies, whether America’s or the Taliban’s: for their discipline, for their loyalty to their buddies and to their principles, for their sacrifices to be away from home.

Because of course we know deep down aren’t the US Soldiers and the Taliban just two sides of the same coin!

This Washington Post pinata has already been smacked by Jonah Goldberg, booted by Allahpundit and dismembered by Victor Davis Hanson mocked by Blackfive, denounced by the moderate voice (yes you read that right), and analyzed by Glenn Reynolds who notes:

Looking at Colman McCarthy’s language drawing equivalence between U.S. soldiers and the Taliban, I don’t think he’s just a dreamy peacenik. And I’ve grown increasingly skeptical of the good intentions of “dreamy peacenik” types anyway, since, somehow, they always seem to promote things that help the other side. At best, they’re oikophobes.

I would suggest that US elite universities have been on the other side of US wars and interests since the 60’s, they supported the NVA, backed the soviets at every chance, opposed fighting against communism in central America, fought against Star Wars, opposed the gulf wars and the current wars that we are fighting. To them a weak, demoralized and defeated United States is not a bug…its a feature.

The problem for them is those same elites no longer have the exclusive access to disseminating the message, the internet, social networking, and conservative media provides an effective counter to this nonsense.

The tactical mistake of the left in turning DADT, which was meant as a compromise to allow gays to serve (but was apparently used as a quick way out for many who didn’t want to serve) into THE public reason for opposing ROTC meant that once repeal did come, the moral urgency of keeping soldiers away, was now gone.

This op-ed is the first salvo for the left to find a new excuse to bar the military from campus. If this meme is picked up by leftist blogs in support of banning ROTC we will know that this has been plan B from the get go.

I call on blogs on the left to denounce this comparison and the argument of this “gentleman”. Their actions will answer a lot of questions about whose side the left is actually on. I know a lot of people on the left of good faith who won’t stand for this nonsense, it’s time for them to say it loudly.

What a phony Jeffrey Goldberg is

In his latest he laments the possibility that Israel will cease to be a democracy. Although on topic Israel Matzav answers him the better question is this. Why isn’t Jeffrey denouncing the lack of democracy among Israel’s enemies?

The idea that this fellow who worships at the altar of Fidel Castro is crying about the limits of democratic government is laughable. I hope the Babalu guys weren’t drinking when they saw this story.

The brilliant Ron Radosh explains the whys and wherefores of this kind of attitude now evident in David Remnick

“liberals like Remnick are simply tired of standing up for a cause that has become unpopular on the left.” In making his comment, Remnick announces that he is officially adopting the position taken a few years back by the London leftist intellectuals

Because in the end nothing is more important than being considered part of the right club. And in a slight variation of the old social club model being a supporter of Jews in Israel is enough to keep you out.

I’m with Fr. O’Malley on this one.
