Title of the Project is wrong, not to mention the Premise

1619 is commonly cited as the date slavery first arrived in “America.” No matter that historians mostly consider the 1619 date a red herring. Enslaved people were working in English Bermuda in 1616. Spanish colonies and forts in today’s Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina had enslaved Africans throughout the mid-to-late 1500s: in fact, a slave rebellion in 1526 helped end the Spanish attempt at settling South Carolina.
The presence of Spanish power continued to inhibit English settlement of the deep south basically until the Revolutionary War. In some sense, the 1526 San Miguel de Guadeloupe rebellion cleared the way for English settlement of South Carolina.

But before 1526, slavery was already ongoing in the eventual United States. The earliest slave society in our present country, and our most recent slavery society, was in Puerto Rico. The island’s Spanish overlords were enslaving the Taino natives by 1500. By 1513, the Taino population had shrunk dramatically due to brutal violence and disease. Thus, Spain brought the first African slaves to Puerto Rico.
Chattel slavery in Puerto Rico continued, despite many “Royal Graces” easing life for free blacks and sometimes promising eventual emancipation, until 1873. Even then, slaves had to buy their own liberty. It’s not clear when the last slave was free in Puerto Rico, but it would still have been a fresh memory in 1898 when the United States gained control from Spain.
Slavery in America did not begin in 1619. It began in 1513. Any argument for a 1619 date implicitly suggests that the American project is an inherently Anglo project: that other regions, like Texas, California, Louisiana, and Puerto Rico, have subordinate histories that aren’t really, truly, equal as American origin stories.
But even if the title were correct, what’s the true propose of this project? Stone gives the answer earlier in the piece.
It isn’t mostly about helping Americans understand the role played by plantation agriculture in American history. It’s mostly about convincing Americans that “America” and “slavery” are essentially synonyms.
Previously, I’ve discussed the Civil War and whether (or not) present-day black Americans should be grateful to our country and to those who fought on the Union side. A lot of people didn’t like my conclusion.
True freedom fighters have the clean conscious of God. May that be enough for them.
And at the same time, however, this country has no need to pay for its past sins. This very same Civil War was America’s trial by fire, its conviction, and its sentence — something that American leaders chose.
But, it seems as if all too many are intent on keeping everyone angry about hardships none of them had to bear. All the New York Times want to do is make itself the drum major of the anger and vengeance parade.
And what if America and slavery are synonymous? What then? Oh, yes, reparations.
Reparations, just like every other government program, will become just another cistern for politicians to wet their beaks. How do you think they all get rich?
Because that’s the true purpose of all this — to create another means for our money to become theirs.
By the way, what about those Spaniards?

and as long as those impeachment numbers are below water she isn’t going to risk her majority and give the GOP a 2nd chance to play with all three houses.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi still isn’t ready to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
Pelosi told House Democrats on a conference call Friday, “The public isn’t there on impeachment.”
She told them the case needs to be “as strong” as possible.
“If and when we act, people will know he gave us no choice,” Pelosi said, according to an aide granted anonymity to discuss the private call.
Of course the closer you get to an election the less viable impeachment is because you’re basically taking the vote out of the people hands. Pelosi isn’t going to pull the trigger on this until or unless it reaches the point where the party is more likely rather than less likely to lose in 2020 over it.
and the 2nd thing, she knows how to count locally
If there is anything that you would think could generate a liberal revolt in very very liberal San Francisco and generate a primary challenger a “No!” on impeachment would be it, and I suspect if she thought there was one chance in twenty that it would cost her that seat, she might go for it and let the chips fall where they may.
But she just doesn’t know how to count nationally, she know how to count locally and so she is able to stand up to her caucus without fear.
Pelosi’s willingness to stand shows just how empty the deep left’s threats are, it’s a lesson worth learning on the right.
Every single time there is a mass shooting gun grabbers immediately flood news programs and social media with a great many myths, mistruths, and outright lies about guns and mass shootings. For this article I assembled a collection of quotes that bust the most outrageous myths I’ve encountered the past couple of weeks. I’ve included a link to the original article for each quote. I highly recommend that everyone check out the original articles because they contain a veritable wealth of information. The first quotes I’ve included tackles the myth that mass shootings are becoming more frequent
“Mass homicides get a lot of news coverage which keeps our focus on the frequency of their occurrence. Just how frequent is sometimes muddled by shifting definitions of mass homicide, and confusion with other terms such as active shooter.”
“But using standard definitions, most data suggest that the prevalence of mass shootings has stayed fairly consistent over the past few decades.”
The next quote from the same article disproves the recent claims that mass shootings are a white male problem. The original article contains a really great chart.
“Overall, though, the ethnic composition of the group of all mass shooters in the U.S. is roughly equivalent to the American population.”
This next quote from the same article proves something that I’ve known all along but may be a surprise to many.
“Long-term studies of youth consistently find that violent games are not a risk factor for youth violence anywhere from one to eight years later. And no less than the U.S. Supreme Court declared in 2011 that scientific studies had failed to link violent games to serious aggression in kids.”
The next quotes are a series of facts from an article that appeared on the website http://www.federalistpapers.org.
“Fact: There were 387 deaths from mass shootings in the United States in 2018 (defined as four or more shot—not necessarily killed—at one time). Of those, most were regular criminals as we expect to see in gang-related drive-bys, bar fights, and a strangely large number of shootings at parties (like this one). About 100 deaths were the result of the random, psycho-killer shootings that dominated news coverage for days and weeks at a time. Mercifully, those are quite rare. But that’s not the impression we are given by the news coverage.”
“Fact: There are more privately owned guns in the United States than ever before and the number of murders has been declining for decades and has been at or near a multigenerational low for several years. More guns, less crime.”
“Fact: There are between 1.2 million and 1.5 million defensive uses of guns per year in the United States. How many more murders, rapes, thefts, and assaults would there be without armed citizens?”
The next quotes disprove the myth that mass shootings are a curse that only the United States suffers from.
“After the tragic events of El Paso, TX, and Dayton, OH many took to social media and the airwaves to perpetuate the myth that the U.S. leads the world in mass shootings.”
“When factoring in gun deaths per capita, homicide rates, and gun ownership rates compared to gun homicide rates – the U.S. is much safer than a plethora of other developed countries, according to a study by the Crime Prevention Research Center.”
The final quote proves that President Trump is not responsible tor the El Paso mass shooting, or any other mass shooting.
“President Trump is no more responsible for mass shootings during his tenure in the White House than Barack Obama was for the shooting at the church in Charleston, nor the Sandy Hook school massacre. On the precipice of a presidential election, it’s convenient for Democrats and their media lapdogs to blame Trump.”
