I was watching Sleepless in Seattle

and the following occurred to me:

I didn’t recognize Victor Garber as the friend, I still think of him from Godspell

It’s amazing to think that there was a time when Rosie O’Donnell was not only cute, but was funny. She is a pretty good supporting actress.

You know it must be odd to be in a movie with your wife when the entire story of the picture is falling in love with someone else.

And isn’t it nice to see a Hollywood marriage succeed. No matter what you hit Hanks for, he gets credit for that one.

Meg Ryan has not been so lucky.

You know one of the bad side effects of a movie like this is how it makes people decide that good people are not good enough because you think magic is going to happen. Both main characters were seeing nice people who deserved a better fate then they got.

Maybe if the idea was getting a good person rather than “the” person the question of finding a mate by the age of 40 v terrorism wouldn’t have come up.

The “Paul is dead” bit is an important reminder that just about everything you’ve noticed has been seen by someone before.

Did anyone else notice Hank’s wife was played by a Bond Girl?

The Dirty Dozen crying scene is one of those great guy moments.

You know if the sexes of Tom Hanks character and Meg Ryan’s character were reversed, this could have been made as a “stalker” drama.

If this movie came out 15 years later Jimmie Durante singles might have been selling on Itunes.

Then again if it was 15 years later Jonah would have had a photo of Anne via linkedln.

And the private detective would have had a digital camera and would not have made a sound. In 20 years would people watching this movie wonder what that sound was?

Even before the twin towers came down the Empire State building had more style. No matter what building were taller how could you have the romantic moment elsewhere.

I wonder how many copies of An affair to Remember were sold after this movie came out?

A lot more than the dirty dozen.

Politically Rob Reiner is a nut but he is still funny and does underplayed comedy very well.

Is it odd to you that a nine year old kid would be watching the front for her mother’s business? It was to me.

And finally “If it is in the computer they believe it.” That hasn’t changed one bit.

Almost totally random thoughts

I have a lot of weird things going through my head so let’s get them out:

If you had a beauty pageant with only unmarried pregnant women would you crown the winner Miss conception?

Tangentially to this does the fact that Cosmopolitan is sold at every checkout line prove the radical feminism simply has never appealed to the vast majority of women?

Did you ever get the feeling that the Laws of Inertia were composed by observing teenagers?

Have you noticed that almost every warning about President Obama inexperience that people were talking about in 2008 seems to have happened?

Is it just me but it appears that Morning Joe is the only AM show that is even remotely watchable?

The reason the liberal mindset will never understand the Catholic Church is it a function of the me generation while the Church looks at things over centuries.

Am I the only guy who when Spain Vs Netherlands became the final instantly thought of the Dutch Sea Beggars and the war for Dutch independence?

We will be colonizing asteroids in other Galaxies and people will still be laughing at the three stooges.

I don’t know why but I’ve had almost no interest in Baseball this year.

The best music written these days is for movies?

Piece of advice to girls, if you want a man to look at your face instead of your breasts, don’t put a large colorful tattoo there.

And all those tattoos are going to look really interesting in nursing homes some day.

It is a better deal to get a $1 soda that is not refilled than to buy a bottemless glass of Soda for $2.75 and bloat yourself.

Going to a local diner is a social activity that helps keep a neighborhood together.

How come WW II comedies of the 60’s like Hogan’s Heroes, McHales Navy hold up after 5 decades but action shows like the Rat Patrol doesn’t

And speaking of Hogan’s Heroes, there was a black actor that was on every season as one of the “background” prisoners. I think he had maybe two lines over the full 6 year run but you saw him in almost every episode. I’d really like to know who he was.

F-Troop got worse once it was in color.

Sometimes I really think the left backs up Radical Islam just for the pleasure of riling us up.

The best husbands tend to speak of their wives reverently around other guys

The two most contagious things in a crowd are despair and enthusiasm

I’ve never understood the idea of getting smashed so bad that you can’t remember a thing and then talking about what a great time you had.

Is it just me or does facebook make just as many enemies as it does friends?

I predict in my lifetime China is going to be either involved in a cataclysmic war or a cataclysmic revolution.

When Cuba finally falls it will be really interesting to see how Hollywood reacts

Is it just me or does the entire Arab world work like a giant Mafia family?

You know Washington has done a bad job when the average American is angry enough to take an interest in between elections.

I have no idea how Glenn Reynolds manages to post so much in one day.

…and I’d really like to find out what Wargames he used to play.

As I get older I find myself encouraging younger people to get married more and more.

and I find myself sad whenever I see people who are alone, it breaks my heart.

I think Matt Smith is the best Dr. Who since Tom Baker.

And my favorite character from this season is Rory

I am dying to see the season premiere of The Big Bang Theory

How long will it take for Lindsay Lohan to end up with a reality show?

Did you notice how Lohan ended up a basket case while Amanda Bynes did not?

I’ll never forget when my oldest asked me in confidence all serious if he had a chance with Amanda Bynes. He had good taste. Lohan would be lucky to get him

You never forget the actress you had a crush on when you were a kid, mine was Linda Carter.

People would be a lot better off if instead of worry what someone else has they worry about doing better for themselves.

You know I’m surprised that soda companies don’t go back to half gallons. Companies always shrink packages to raise prices.

If the rest of the government ran as efficiently as our military we would be a lot better off.

If your goal is to make a political point then ranking a sitting president all time is useful, but frankly any group that ranks President Obama over Reagan is idiotic and not to be trusted.

In terms of ranking he also has the unfair disadvantage of the expectations game, if you compare him to expectations he would rank near Hoover except that he didn’t have you know anything near the actual accomplishments of Hoover before the presidency.

My own rankings of presidents is here but they are not numerical they are by group. I still think he has to potential to end up almost anywhere in the list because of the major crisis that he has to deal with. The trick is the results of many of them aren’t going to be apparent for a while, maybe even not until years after he is out of office.

I don’t care for this president, but it’s just not fair to try and rank his place in history right now. I’m too close to it and there are too many variables.

For example regardless of the reason for it the appointment of Petraeus could dramatically change things, if congress changes sides as is likely how he manages to work with such a congress can make a difference. We are still not even half way into his first term.

Do I expect positive changes? Frankly no, but that doesn’t mean the can’t or won’t happen. He is the president of my country and I want the best for my country, I don’t think he will bring it but I’d be very happy if he did.

When those historians rank this president where they do they once again create a set expectations that have great potential to be unmet. They serve him and the country very poorly.

Update: Smitty makes the same point I did

But here is my take:

It would be nice if the Washington Post appointed a, you know, conservative, to cover conservatives, but that isn’t in the cards, where their customer base is and just not going to happen. Conservatives being angry at Weigel is not going to change this policy.

Stacy calls him a friend, he has gone after him on occasion when wrong (as have I) but he believes in the honey/vinegar principle here, plus since he declares him a friend that has to trump political considerations.

Weigel’s apology can be taken or not, it’s up to you. Do remember that if you choose not to accept the apology, be aware that this is the standard you are setting for yourself.

As far as him as an individual, I don’t know him or have loyalty one way or the other, he is a friend of a friend so I’ll give him some consideration on those lines, but as far as the conservative movement is concerned here’s the bottom line.

As far as him and the Wa Po, it’s real simple. I see no reason why we should give him more consideration than any other journalist. If he gives us a fair shake then we should act accordingly, if not then not.

And Dave some basic advice: If you don’t want something to get out, you don’t send it in an e-mail. Write the e-mail, vent your spleen, then delete it. I’ve done that myself and you’d be shocked at how much better you feel just writing it.

Sooner or later someone is going to Hack JournoList so the people on it should act accordingly.

Update: Weigel resigns. Will they choose a conservative to cover conservatives in the future? I wouldn’t be a whole lot of money on it.

Update 2: I have since met Weigel, he seems like a nice enough guy.
