It must have been to re-assure the “abortion caucus” that any deal involving Stupak didn’t really restrict abortion. At least that’s my guess.

Question: DaTechGuy, why aren’t you talking about the various whip counts.

All of the whip counts are guesses, they have been all over the map. You have a better chance of getting your entire bracket correct in March Madness than to get an accurate whip count.

I still don’t think it is going to pass. Until the vote actually takes place that can’t be confirmed, so I’m not going to play guessing games with numbers. However I will point to Robert Stacy McCain’s American spectator article comparing this push to the end of Animal House:

Even then, Scott Brown was driving his Dodge truck through the snow en route to the Jan. 19 Senate victory that most political observers at the time believed was the final death-blow to this unpopular legislation. Could there be a more decisive electoral verdict than for a Republican to be elected in liberal Massachusetts on a promise to stop the health-care bill?

Well, the voters be damned.

He concludes thusly:

At this point, however, the arguments for passage resemble another Animal House scene, with Obama in the role of Otter when he announces, “I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.” It remains to be seen whether House Democrats will supply Bluto’s famous answer: “We’re just the guys to do it.”

It’s an amazing thing to watch people walk off a cliff while insisting that they will fall up.

Who knew that Sen Blutarski was still in Congress?

Keep an eye on Fishbait Miller

As you might have noticed I like to quote Tip O’Neill book Man of the House to explain how politics works. There is a particular passage on page 134 that brings to mind what is going on behind the scenes right now.

The background: In the book was a Congressman Leo O’Brien who had promised a vote to Sam Rayburn on an issue and was getting killed at home over it. Since his word had been given (Yes that makes a difference, I still believe that one’s word is sacrosanct) Tip told him he had no choice but to go to Rayburn and ask to be released. (How hard must that have been) I’ll let Rayburn and O’Neill finish the story:

“…you gave me your word and I expect you to keep it. However I can certainly appreciate your situation, so here’s what I’ll do for you. On the day of the vote I want to see you in the front row. Keep your eye on the doorkeeper. If I don’t need your vote, Fishbait Miller will give you the sign and you’ll be free to vote your district.”…

…when Leo took his seat in the front row, he looked around and saw thirteen other guys that Sam had in his pocket in case he needed them. It wasn’t just Leo. The entire front row was sitting there and waiting for the nod from Fishbait Miller.

This is the real question that we don’t know the answer to. Does Nancy Pelosi have the votes and is just deciding who sits in the front row or is she scrambling for votes? And if the media knows what the truth is will they tell us?

I’ve noticed that lately the Spammers have been getting better and better and disguising their stuff. I’ve seen quite a few spam comments manage to make it to the regular queue before I can weed them out.

I’ve also noticed that several legit comments have been sent to the spam queue. If your comment is delayed in being posted (read Dad29) it is likely due to it being accidentally re-directed to the spam queue by wordpress.

Rest assured that I check the spam queue and if I see you being called spam when you should not I’ll get you out of there and back into the regular queue.

Normal comment rules apply. If you are using profanity it will be edited. If you want an idea of what I won’t allow check here.
