Palin has it right on CPAC

In my opinion you don’t cede the ground on a position to a different side, you show up and make your case.

I don’t have a problem with those who choose to boycott CPAC, Its their call but I’d just as soon not have the case for marriage conceded. I would think that the hearts and minds of thousands of conservatives in one place, hundreds of bloggers and etc are worth fighting for.

Although I am a Catholic I have to be with Jerry Falwell on this: “I’ll preach in hell if they promise to let me out.” or if you prefer one of my favorite movie reference:

British Captain: “I understood Mr. LaFitte was in command at Barataria.”

Jean LaFitte: “If your offer is good it will stand up under fire.”

The arguments for marriage are good, they stand up under fire. We should go to CPAC and make them.

Mike Pence is the talk of the CPAC crowd

…yesterday with the reports that he will not run for president this year:

Three sources close to Republican Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana tell CNN they are told he will announce he is not running for president in 2012 and will instead begin exploring a run for governor.

These sources say he has been flattered by the efforts to nudge him into the GOP presidential race but, as one of the sources put it, “he is a realist and kept coming back to questions about the fund-raising.” The second source said some around Pence also have reminded him of the difficulty of mounting a presidential campaign from the House, and noted that, at age 51, he would have a better platform to explore a presidential run if he first was elected governor.

There is a fair amount of disappointment in the CPAC community over this today but I think this is a great development. The easiest way for a non-conservative to win the Republican primary is for too many strong conservatives splitting the vote. I suspect that some good conservatives who have no prayer of winning are going to find themselves well-financed early by people who want that vote divided to allow an establishment candidate some space. That’s how you win a nomination with only 35-40% of the vote.

I think this is good news for us. Of course we haven’t heard the actual announcement so this could all be smoke.

I purchased my tickets for CPAC yesterday

I’m going to be flying down on the day before and flying out on the day after.

I can’t even think of affording to stay at the CPAC hotel so I’ll be staying farther out and Metroing back and forth to the conference.

My plan is to broadcast live from the conference (although technically it will be over by the time the show is on) but I’m sure there will be no shortage of national bloggers available to talk when things are all done.

Because I’ve been so involved in the show I missed the debate over GOPproud at CPAC.

I actually think both sides have a point here, if the agenda of GOP Proud is antithetical to a group it certainly can oppose its inclusion, but once it has been included the question becomes do I access this group of potential conservative voters or don’t I.

I submit it is very hard to make your case to a voter if you don’t show up, why cede the ground to ones opponent? Additionally when you have a good case on the merits as Thomas Peters et/al do one should move forward without fear into the breach directly.

All that being said right now conservatives are celebrating one of their biggest victories in history and when it comes time to stop the Obama agenda and repeal Obamacase I’d just as soon have gay republicans and conservatives voting with me on those issues.

In the last Election Bill Gunn opposed the war in Afghanistan. I absolutely disagreed with him but had no problem supporting him. Andrea Shea King is iffy on Obama’s birth place, but we agree on most issues and I will never forget her kindness toward me. On Gay Marriage Cynthia Yockey and I couldn’t be farther apart, but she is a delightful lady and a friend and one issue does not a friendship break.

Rather than boycotting, lets celebrate our common victories while unapologetically clashing when we disagree.

Was it only a year ago that I was blegging for help to get to CPAC?

Well in theory, I’m actually worse off than last year. The show, even sold out, pays less than unemployment and the wife is currently not working.

However with the show sold out I am arranging for a second hour and I already have enough interested advertisers to pay for it. If the 2nd hour sells anywhere near as good as the first (and given the response to the show I see no reason why it won’t if I work hard at it) then I will be back to my old pay before the initial layoff. That means that I think I can swing CPAC on my own (but feel free to hit the tip jar if so inclined).

I’m hoping to do the show live from CPAC (or from the end of CPAC since things end around 6 or 7 and the show starts at 9 but I’m sure there will be bloggers a plenty to snarf for the show), There are logistical hurdles to be taken care of but I hope to get through them.
