One of the mistakes of the Obama administration was the “I’m in charge” mode on this, taking ownership on the BP stuff early. Now he owns a mess.

Matthews just compared it to the Iranian Hostage Crisis in terms of political cost. That is exactly right and depending on the long term effects of this spill (BP will eventually get it fixed maybe even this week.) it will bleed him the same way the Iranian Hostage Crisis did.

The ultimate Arthur vs Carter experience!

On Morning Joe today they are going the whole “Bring them to justice” mode.

Everybody seems to be acting as if BP was just dying to release oil into the Gulf, but what really annoys me is the suggestion that BP isn’t trying to fix this.

Does anyone seriously doubt that from Day 1 BP has been trying to plug and/or stop that leak. Is there anyone who seriously thinks that they WANT oil spilling into the gulf?

Naturally there are going to be lawyers and suits and that is a cost of doing business, that’s cool. When you get you get the type of accident that happens once every two generations like this one is going to be expensive, that’s cool and fair but lets not forget that the goal isn’t to break the company, lose the energy it produces or the jobs it creates.

Actually that is a goal for some but it shouldn’t be a goal for us.

Update: The Anchoress Tweets along those lines:

Good thing about BP Oil Spill: it’s got Obama talking about “jobs.” I wonder how many will lose jobs w/ drilling stopped?

Yup that’s it.

That has been ignored:

Folks, what the hell is so much less delicate about the Gulf of Mexico than ANWR, where we could drill much more safely than in the Gulf? Nothing—that’s what. The ecosystems in the Gulf are far more vulnerable than those in ANWR—as are the local economies that depend on them. And the practices that would be required to produce oil in Alaska—or in shallower water off of California, for that matter—are much safer than those we used to place the Gulf at risk.

Because after all we much rather have people drilling in the gulf than up in the arctic.

Read the whole thing as they say.

Q; Why should Little Miss Attila be Governor of California instead of Arnold?

She uses simple logic while Arnold used simple political expediency. To wit:

The logical response to Deepwater Horizon would be to encourage more drilling in shallow water, where the rigs are reachable by land and the engineering is less challenging and costly—it’s also easier, cheaper and faster to clean up around these platforms if something should occur.

But of course that’s not the reaction we’re getting. Instead, Schwarzenegger has scrapped offshore drilling in the safer, shallower waters off of California, and the drilling off of Virginia has also been halted. It’s as if someone had been killed by falling off a ladder, trying to get at the apples on top of the tree, and in response we eschewed picking the low-hanging fruit and trying to muddle along without apples.

Environmentalism was once about conservation, it has instead become a de-facto religion for people who wanted to run away from Christianity.

As for the Terminator; he has really gone the full Kennedy hasn’t he?
