Muslems kill people? NEVER!

Try not to go Kryten when you read these two paragraphs that believe it or not are from the same story one directly after the other:

“If you bother us again, we will order someone in Mogadishu to meet you,” a gang member added before the line went dead.

Often, though, the pirates are friendly and helpful, though they detest use of the p-word. “We never kill people. We are Muslims. We are marines, coastguards — not pirates,” one said.

Maybe it is because although I was born in 63 my parents were born in the early 20’s and my father served in the pacific during World War II but I just can’t wrap my head around this stuff or the ability of people to let this stuff go.

Bits of this have been promoted from this earlier post, but MSNBC has to be heard to be believed this Easter Afternoon:

3:24 p.m. Unbelievable MSNBC is complaining that now the pirates will become more violent. They are bringing up Black Hawk Down, does anyone remember that casualty wise we killed and wounded the enemy more than 15 to 1. The anchor woman calls it great news but the reporter on the phone is all doom and gloom, what if we hurt people they will get angry.

Jim Miklaszewski followed that up describing the captain as jumping off the boat to as trying to “save his own skin”. The tone was to my ears distinctly derogatory. Can someone explain to me why trying to save his skin is a bad thing here?

They followed up with the anchor stressing that shooting the pirates was only done as a last resort. At 4:07 pm. The Anchor described the pirate in custody as being “taken hostage”. According to the press conference the pirate in custody (or the “hostage” as MSNBC puts it) might have surrendered but its unclear from the conference if the pirate surrendered or no.

In addition we heard about root causes and all the trouble that will happen if we defend our ships, the entire attitude is very amazing to me. I don’t know if these people actually belief this or if they are trying to play to their niche audience of talk left readers.

Update: 4:50 p.m. The pirates really don’t want to kill people says the anchor. They fear more violence. Their terror experts now is afraid that the pirates will now become violent.

MSNBC breaks away for Meet the press, interesting to see what they said before all this went down. Apparently this is a “law enforcement issue” I always thought that piracy was a military issue.

My Notre Dame’s Kryten moment

I was looking at some Notre Dame stories today and found this quote concerning the college:

“We have a much more challenging mission than most universities. Most universities strive simply to be excellent educational institutions by the accepted standards of the profession. We do this at Notre Dame, and we have had great success. But we also foster and celebrate a distinctive mission to be a Catholic university, inspired and guided by a great spiritual tradition.”

If you want to find out who owns this inspired quote affirming the importance of the Catholic identity of Notre Dame click here.

Then as quick as you can click here to get the Kryten out of your system.

Pirates…the rest of the story.

Glenn Reynolds talks about the Pirate situation and notes something:

Funny that nation-states successfully suppressed pirates for years without such troubles, suggesting that the law has not exactly “progressed” in this area.

The problem is the law has progressed. Until the mid 1800’s or so pirates taken in the act on the high seas could be hanged at once without further trial. Remember the Royal Navy has ordered its ships to avoid detaining pirates because they were afraid of violating their human rights.

Expect more of this unless it is treated harshly.
