After posting new pages for 43 out of 45 days Rich of Rich’s Comic Blog is taking a well deserved rest from his blog. His Ten doctors will return after the first of the year.

This is a great chance to start from the begining and catch the whole thing from the start. The title page is here and the first strip is here.

And don’t forget to check out his other quality strips.

And FYI in terms of continuity this adventure takes place between the episodes The Runaway Bride and Smith and Jones.

Net is back but town still wacked

Well I came home from a job interview to two happy sights: My first unemployment check finally showed up. (should be direct deposit from this point on).

And Comcast is back up including cable and net!

Incredibly the houses across the street, to the right of me and behind me are still all without power. We are the end of the power supply. Trash pickup however took place as normal.

Some neighbors have generators but most have relocated themselves for the duration. There will be no school here tomorrow (although Leominster is still iffy on that for tomorrow.)

Lunenburg has decided to cut its losses and keep schools closed until after the new year.

There is some nasty weather coming in the area tomorrow night so the already overworked power crews are going to be really on the spot to try to get people up before then.

But my situation means that blogging will become semi regular again tomorrow will have to get the minor brush removed.

A few more storm observations

A few thoughts in the middle of the mess that is North Central Mass these days….

The troubles of a crook in Chicago don’t mean a lot when you can’t turn on your lights in Massachusetts.

I can’t imagine what people went through say 150 years ago when there was no communication when a storm like this hit. Then again they would have mostly cleared land and no electricity and generally had their own food supplies so it might not have been an issue in the days before the car and the telephone pole.

When you are a 16 year old kid and you are working in the only supermarket in town that has power, you are likely doing the greatest service for the general public that you will do during your teenage years.

The local Bishop gave dispensation for Catholics to skip mass this Sunday however we had it anyway and a fair amount of people turned up.

It’s kind of funny I’ve been disappointed that there have been no bites on my eBay offerings for remote tech support, but it turns out that I’m lucky because if there had been pretty bad to not be able to connect.

It is a real commentary on the state of television these days that I have not missed it in the least.

During my time when my family and another stayed at a friend’s house in Ft. Devins on Friday night we ended the evening with a game of Apples and Apples and started the morning with a game of Talisman. There is a real pleasure of 6-9 people sitting at a table together playing a game and enjoying each other company.

It very odd when you can drive 50 miles in a direction and there is absolutely no damage when your city looks like its been chewed up and spat out.

You know all those ads about firing your phone company with magic jack or the Comcast triple play sound great until you have no power to run your phone.

And I am very grateful that I decided to keep my second line as an old fashioned land line. It has been working the entire time.

And finally it is amazing what you can do without when you have no choice in the matter.

Well the ice slammed into us really good. No power (or heat) in the house, no power in the neighborhood, no power for most of the city (although as of this writing two sections of town have lights) and a good chunk of central mass is totally dark.

Tonight I’m writing from a friend’s house in the former Fort Devens. Our friend insisted we come to a place where the lights burn brightly.

I have my laptop with me and once I get a chance to read about today’s news I’ll have things to say but I’ll just go with a few observations:

People seem to be taking the lack of power in stride.

Trees are down everywhere, very large branches were blocking my driveway we cleared enough to pull in and out but there are huge trees and power lines all over the place.

The bright side is with school out we were able to make a trip to my favorite haunt in the days of HiWired: Mighty Subs in Needham (where you would never know a storm took place). Art and Karen have been together since high school and have run this place for decades. Their motto is “Our small is their large” and they aren’t kidding.

If you are EVER in the Needham Massachusetts area give them a visit, they are only open weekdays till 4 and serve a full breakfast as well, but it is their Mighty Subs that are the star of the show.

There is a fair amount of pleasure just reading a book or staying under the and not worrying about the rest of the world.

It’s days like this when you really have to appreciate the Police, Fire and Utility people. When the chips are down they work like there is no tomorrow.

You know at least one Christmas its a good idea to buy your wife $300 worth of Yankee Candles. Not only will she not need any more for years but some dark day it might pay off.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, nobody has a better group of friends than me that you can count on. I’m really blessed.

And destructive as it was, those trees covered in ice, particularly the view of a tree covered hillside is one of the most beautiful sights you will ever see.
