As we see opening day break on a bleak winter we remember that wonderful year of 2004.

On this day Baseball Musings saw strong outings from both Schilling and the Bullpen as a good sign for the Sox.

Meanwhile the only Redsox story at the Baseball Crank in April was the telling of his tale of meeting Ted Williams. But that’s something always worth remembering.

…people will still watch the movie the Seven Samurai and be amazed at the quality of the story, plotting and acting. It’s not my favorite move of all time, but I can’t find a flaw it it anywhere.

In my mind it combines high art and entertainment comedy and just a fantastic story about the realities of life.

Due to it’s length you can’t watch it every week, sort of like Avalon Hill’s Civilization it’s best seen maybe twice a year but it’s an event. It would be very hard for me to pick any movie above it, even the Godfather or Casablanca.

If you have never seen it find a Sunday afternoon like this one and do so. I suspect it must have been a real chore to make.

American movie goers who have never seen it will recognize the scene above redone by James Colburn in the Magnificent Seven.

Incredible stuff.

That Bigot Betty White…

…at least that must be what Richard Cohen would conclude.

Was watching the old Match Game on the game show network this morning after sleeping late. It’s one of those old shows that are still funny as the years go by.

Well a younger Betty White was on and a question was “Sgt Preston was so alone for so long he married his blank.” when she said Husky she shouted to the booing audience: “Who else would he marry?”

Obviously the entire Match Game cast and crew and audience under the Cohen rule must have been a bunch of racist bigot, homophobes etc etc etc since the concept that he might have married another Mountie never occurred to them.

When you watch old television you can’t help but notice this kind of stuff, it’s amazing what film can do.

(Actually it’s amazing what was considered racy on those old shows too…)

They have two huge advantages that have added to their longevity. First of all their type of physical humor translates to any language. My grandmother spoke very poor English but she understood “Those crazy men” just fine.

The other is the length of their films are not only perfect for TV with plenty of room for the modern commercial, but are perfect for another reason.

I remember from Tip O’Neil’s autobiography that the best speech is about 9-15 min because that is how long you can hold attention, I think one of the reasons why the Stooges are stronger than the Marx Brothers and Laurel and Hardy (and don’t get me wrong they are all classic) is the fact that they primarily made shorts that can be watched on TV in 15-20 minutes, in a fast world that is a huge advantage.
