James Hudnall writes a tribute to the Comic Books series The Watchmen at Big Hollywood:

“Watchmen” opens Friday and we’ll see how well it performs in the theaters, but the graphic novel has been a best seller for DC Comics since its inception in 1985. And not without surprise. It’s been voted the best graphic novel of all time by many people. It even showed up in Time Magazine as one of the best literary novels of the 20th century. The only comic to make that list. Personally, I don’t care much for lists or other popularity contests. They seem too high school to me. A lot of stuff on “best ever” lists tends to be crap. It’s all someone’s opinion, after all. But “Watchmen” is definitely a work of art. One that will stand the test of time and already has.

Count me in the minority here. I’ve been reading comics for 34 years. I didn’t care for the Watchmen when it came out and I don’t care for it now.

I have absolutely no interest in the movie. As for Alan Moore’s work I’d check out his Swamp Thing Issues instead.

Give me Stan Sakai , Steve Englehart and Gardner Fox or Denny O’Neil anyday.

And the Greatest Comic Series ever Written? Lone Wolf and Cub hands down!

I think Manny is a first ballot HOFer…

…but it seems to me that the Dodgers were bidding against themselves here.

I loved watching Manny play. My Sox won two world series with him here. It was great seeing him in the victory parade, and I still think the Catch it, Hi-five the fan and throw to first for the double play was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in baseball, but there was no reason to give in if you are the Dodgers.

It will remain to be seen what happens when the games actually count.

My Review of Jason Stark’s Book: The Stark Truth. is available at Amazon.com here.

It is definitely worth the $1 I paid for it but I wouldn’t have paid more for it. I must admit I am a fan of anyone who trumpets the virtues of Yogi Berra as the greatest catcher of all time.

His Overrated list
RHP Nolan Ryan
LHP Sandy Koufax
Relief P Lee Smith

DH Ron Blomberg
C Benito Santiago
1B Steve Garvey
2B Steve Sax
3B Greg Nettles
SS Phil Rizzuto
LF Lou Brock
CF Andruw Jones
RF Dave Winfield

His Underrated List

RHP Bob Feller
LHP Babe Ruth
Relief P Goose Gossage
DH Edger Martinez

C Yogi Berra
1B Hank Greenberg
2B Craig Biggio
3B Ron Santo
SS Barry Larkin
LF Stan Musial
CF Duke Snyder
RF Frank Robinson

How Berra, Snyder, Robinson and the Duke can be as ignored as they are is criminal. I should point out that he gives a 2-5 list on each position. I like including Dwight Evans as the 2nd most underrated Right Fielder but I question the absence of Harold Baines in the top 5 underrated DH’s.

He also gives a top 3 over/under for each team. Yaz tops the overrated Redsox list.

…don’t forget that the Total confusion convention begins tomorrow and runs for 4 days at the Holiday Inn in Mansfield Massachusetts. It’s a little late for registration but there is no reason why you can’t show up at the door and hope for the best.

If you want something with a little more notice consider ConBust 2009 held at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is a combination sci-fi/fantasy/anime and gaming convention that will be held March 27th through 29th. Mike’s comics an online dealer that carries the entire line of Doctor Who Audios that I review a lot on this blog will be a dealer there and that reason alone is good enough for me to visit.

It’s worth noting that you might qualify for free housing if you are a college student 18 years old or older you might be able to get housing for the event details here.
