…from my youth.

My mother is a strong willed Sicilian woman who although she had many diplomatic skills was also blunt when asked a direct question. This bluntness made her more than a few enemies.

There is one in particular that comes to mind, I won’t quote the name as the woman in question is long dead but to say there was no love lost between them is the understatement and then some. I’ve heard the stories of their many conflicts dating back to the 40’s for decades.

I remember thirty something years ago the subject came up and my mother was talking about something that had happened back in the 50’s. She was actually getting angry over it, one of the few times I ever saw her start to get carried away. She began to mention a rumor and suddenly stopped herself short. I noticed a look on her face as if she was angry to have even alluded to it.

I asked her about the rumor and she wouldn’t go any further, her whole attitude shifted. She said that she would not repeat it, no matter what she had done to her in the past or how much she disliked her the very suggestion was beyond the pale and she scolded herself for mentioning it.

Her anger dissipated at once and she gave me a talking to on propriety and respect and she stressed about how one should never go by rumor. It really struck me how ashamed of herself she was. I had never seen that before.

I don’t think I have to say what the rumor was, but it really gives an illustration of how attitudes have changed in just a few generations. My parents did have homosexual acquaintances (as did I) but their orientation was never openly discussed. In those days to suggest or mention it was considered the height of impropriety.

I never knew the mainstream media held such old fashioned values.

Update: Stacy notices that Robert Gibbs thinks he’s my mother.

The Return of “Yes Prime Minister”

Years and government might change but the intransigence of the government and civil service bureaucracy remain eternal hopeless. Or at least it will be on screen as the original creators of the spectacular British series Yes (Prime) Minister are going to have another go at it.

They say that whoever you vote for the Government always gets in. That was the running joke behind Yes, Prime Minister, the Eighties comedy that did its eloquent bit to undermine our faith in the possibilities of political change. And now, whoever we voted for yesterday, Yes, Prime Minister is itself back, this time as a play receiving its first previews in Chichester next week.

Unfortunately for us in the states this will be unlikely to cross the pond. With the base writing team on the job we know the quality will be there. Will this lead to a new series? Time will tell.

Here is a glimpse of the old one if you haven’t heard of it:

This is a tough act to follow. I wish them luck

…the reason why I enjoyed this episode so much, I mean in addition to the fact that Matt Smith makes a simply wonderful Doctor who unlike the 9th and 10th is not constantly tortured in the way he looks at things.

What made the episode special is the Doctor dealing with young Amelia Pond.

After these scenes with young Amelia the Doctor is getting ready to leave

With glee she runs to her room, packs a bag and waits for his return.

Since 1963 little kids have dreamed of having the doctor land in their yard and visit them. They have imagined that the doctor would take them away in the TARDIS to see all of time and space. Millions upon millions of Britons and people from the Commonwealth have dreamt those dreams.

And in that moment watching that scene they smiled and ever so briefly imagined that they were kids again and it was them sitting waiting to go.

I must admit I imagined it too.

…is of one of the funniest movies ever made.

Whenever possible if people come over who don’t watch old movies I show them Arsenic and Old Lace. They invariably laugh their heads off.

My Amazon review of the movie from almost 10 years ago is here. If Anything I’ve understated how funny it is.

Go rent it today.
