Identity please

I generally disagree with Darren Hutchinson but you can be sure he will give you not only an honest argument but a reasoned one. He does so again today on the subject of identity politics and the court:

Although Obama relied upon identity politics for his electoral success, the White House is instructing GLBT, Latino and women’s groups to kill the identity talk. Several GLBT, Latino and women’s civil rights groups have urged the president to pick a candidate who will enhance the Court’s diversity. No openly gay or Latino person has ever sat on the Supreme Court. Only two women (both white) have occupied a seat on the Court. And two black men have also served on the Court.

I agree that the candidate should not look like a “token” hire, but there are many persons of color, women, and GLBT lawyers who would make excellent Supreme Court justices.

Now of course who I would like to see on the court and who Professor Hutchinson would like to see are likely as night and day philosophically but like the professor I think a token hire is a bad idea. However the professor also says this:

White House is doing its best to toss aside the very identity-based movements and politics that won the election for Obama. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says that: “I don’t think that the lobbying of interest groups will help. . . .I think in many ways lobbying can – and will –be counterproductive.” Of course, Gibbs never identifies the dangers the groups create by stating their preference for diversity. Also, it seems odd that Gibbs would disparage “special interest” groups, when labor, civil rights, feminist, pro-choice, anti-war, glbt, and many other “interest groups” are essential components of the Democratic Party. Without their support, neither Obama nor Gibbs would have a job at the White House.

That may be so but it’s not relevant. You don’t want to end up with a “Black” seat or the “Asian” seat or the “Latino” seat etc etc etc.

Of course among equally qualified candidates race is irrelevant as long as the candidate is well qualified all the other stuff is moot.

The whitehouse is doing the right thing in de-emphasizing identity. Not only is it patronizing but once you have a quota established then it becomes an entitlement and that will divide us even further.

The disagreement is about a principle since of course the president will almost certainly make an identity choice. Unless there is an old Chicago debt (a la Abe Fortis) to pay back I can’t imagine that either of us will be disappointed with at least the qualifications of the selection.

Update: Somehow missed the word “like” in a sentence above.

Ok he spoke now what?

Well President Obama gave his speech at ND some thoughts.

The speech itself was frankly forgettable, his speech in Arizona was far superior (no matter what Rush said concerning it).

The Protests were rather large and the media’s total ignoring of any protest outside of eyeshot of the event was lame but predictable.

The few protesters at ND who heckled him did us no favors.

Till the very last moment Catholic Students, Catholic Teachers and Catholic Priests had the chance to do the right thing. They failed. We all fail and Catholics have confession to fall back on. May they take advantage of it quickly.

The damage to the Catholic nature of the school can’t be measured. As almost no Catholic Schools commented their silence condemns them as well. My decision to send my son to a secular school (aided by the scholarship) looks really good.

I know that a Canon suit is being filed against the school. I can’t see how the school can win.

Now that the event is over a forced transfer of Jenkins by the Bishop or by the Vatican would certainly be in order.

This is going to cost ND for decades.

Via Ann Althouse let us note a seminal moment in the Obama administration:

the Daily show discovers that Obama is like Bush.

You will note that the sparks really started to fly at Pelosi once John Stewart went after her. It’s one thing for Rush or Hanity or even Bill O’Reilly to go after her. The left couldn’t care less. To their true believers they are not legatmate sources, to those same people however Jon Stewart is.

Jon Stewart has now directly ridiculed president Obama by name. He has done it on a primary news source for the far left and for many young people who pay no attention, and not only that he has done it in a way that a person who has no idea about politics can understand.

People may not realize how big this is. Will this mean that other comics will now be willing to hit him? Will this give the imprimatur to other to speak up? Only time will tell, but the first time is always easiest.

Obama rewards the Zombies

You know we had a lot of fun with Zombie Jokes (via Gimmie 5 cents) here, first we reported on Zombie Unemployment:

Joblessness up 20% among Zombie Population Many claim discrimination in favor of the living.

Then we talked about Massachusetts taxing and rewarding Zombies:

Massachusetts uses a different means of determining eligibility for unemployment. Under their constitution, the Commonwealth is able to tax the dead and undead alike, making Ms. Glass eligible for state-funded retraining, health benefits, and Affirmative-Action based job placement.

“I thank God for the Socialist Republik Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” Ms. Glass says. “If I unlived elsewhere, I wouldn’t even count as a person.”

Then we saw the White House Zombie appointment:

Among growing concern over jobless rates and and basic civil rights for America’s zombie population, the Obama administration announced this week the newly formed Department of Undead Affairs, to be headed by Chicago democrat Fred Murman, who has just been appointed as secretary.

Congress reacted:

“He may smell a bit but he has a heart of gold.”

Of course the appointment had tax issues:

An unexpected snag occurred today as members of the senate ethics committee uncovered documents related to Mr. Murman’s death, showing that his family never paid the required death or estate taxes associated with his death. Mr. Murman and his representatives were unavailable for comment on the allegations, brought forth this morning.

We had a lot of fun with these posts but who knew that it was all real:

This week, thousands of people are getting stimulus checks in the mail. The problem is that a lot of them are dead. A Long Island woman was shocked when she checked the mail and received a letter from the U.S. Treasury — but it wasn’t for her.

Antoniette Santopadre of Valley Stream was expecting a $250 stimulus check. But when her son finally opened it, they saw that the check was made out to her father, Romolo Romonini, who died in Italy 34 years ago. He’d been a U.S. citizen when he left for Italy in 1933, but only returned to the United Stated for a seven-month visit in 1969.

You know when they say that life is becoming impossible to parody. It’s getting that way isn’t it?
