Kennedy & Emanuel: no surprises but no common sense

Thinking about the two big stories in the last 24 hours it occurs to me that a lot of the fuss in a bit odd.

First on Emanuel. The president elect has rightly taken quite a few hits on the amazing bungling he has achieved on this. It seems to me however that it would be more of a shock if the chief of staff of the incoming president elect didn’t talk to the governor concerning the vacant Senate seat then if he did. In fact this is the sort of thing a chief of staff is supposed to do. The big mistake of the Obamaites has been the abject denials of contact. They would have been much wiser to say quite rightly: “Of course we had contact concerning this. What would you expect? But we will be damned if anyone would expect that we would “pay” for the seat.

This cost credibility and showed vacillation. When you are marketed as a savior that is not what people expect to hear. It would not surprise me to see more of this in the future, but a wise administration will learn from it.

As for Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg she is apparently carrying herself as a privileged elite in dealing with the press and the office. This is politically foolish but not unexpected. It would be impossible for her to Schlossberg to act any like a normal candidate or person as she has nothing in her background that suggests anything other than royal privilege. What has she ever been denied and who has ever denied her? She is John Quincy Adams without the resume.

I suspect that like John Quincy in asking for this office she genuinely wants to serve the public in the traditions of her family and wants to prove herself against the example of a famous father. Ironically both would expect that of course high office is deserved. The difference being Adams would expect it due to a public record that would be a lifetime of work for two other people. She expects it because of a lifetime of adoration and deference.but just can’t bring herself to have to ask the people for the privilege.

Again I think we will see a lot more of this unless the heat becomes unbearable for her to handle but you never know. After all her Uncle had no business winning a Senate Seat in ’62 but love him or hate him nobody can deny his ability as a Senator.

Anyways these are both interesting stories but they shouldn’t shock anybody at all.

On being used

Continuing the topic of my last post there is something I said that should be elaborated on:

I suspect beyond the core set of true believers the support is actually very thin. It is what the “enlightened” and “right” type of people support to show how good and tolerant they are. It allows people to feel good about themselves without actually doing anything. It keep them safe from that most dreaded charge of bigotry. In short it is an exercise in narcissism.

It is my opinion that the left in general and the democratic party in particular will use the supporters of gay marriage for their fundraising, votes and for their organization as long as it is to their political benefit. If the worm turns (see 2nd amendment rights for an example) they party will run from them like a scared rabbit.

It is up to actual supporters of Gay Marriage who truly believe this is a civil rights issue to decide if that thin help is worth it. Perhaps they believe that there is no chance for a cultural reversal, media would suggest that may be the case, but demographics do not. Or maybe the short terms gains outweigh the risks of long terms betrayal. Or perhaps they gay marriage supports are pragmatic in the political sense.

I don’t know but the outrage of the left over the president elects decision means that this choice is going to have to be made. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Special UPDATE: With the return of Gay Marriage as a big issue I’m bumping this post from my first month of blogging to the top. I think the points within concerning Gay Marriage are just as valid two years later and as the blog was only a month old it got very little play. So I present my blast from the past, my very first post on the subject of Gay Marriage.

I’m am constantly amazed at the lack of memory in this country, it might have to do with the lack of knowledge of history in this country. As evidence I quote Richard Cohen today:

The Answer is no

Glenn Reynolds asks the following question:

The real question, given the way the press covered for John Edwards, Barack Obama, et al. is whether the press would cover a Watergate if it happened under a Democratic administration.

The answer is no and Ann Coulter gives some examples:

She complained that we didn’t have enough “Arabic translators” in Afghanistan — not realizing the natives don’t speak Arabic in Afghanistan, but rather a variety of regional dialects, the most common of which is Pashtun.

Speaking to military veterans one time, Palin said, “Our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today.”

She bragged about passing a law regulating the nuclear industry that it turned out never became a law at all.

Some days Palin said Venezuela’s dictator Hugo Chavez should suffer “regional isolation” — but then on others she’d say she supported the president’s meeting with Chavez.

She told one audience about recent tornados in Kansas that had killed 10,000 people. In fact, a dozen people were killed in the tornados.

She referred to the “57 states” that make up the U.S.

Speaking of her eldest daughter’s pregnancy, she said Bristol was being “punished” with a baby.

As you probably know — or guessed by now — none of these gaffes were uttered by Palin. They are all Obama gaffes. Luckily, he made them to a star-struck press that managed not to ask him a difficult question for two years.

And I’ve already dealt with the Caroline vs Sarah business today.

As long as the press sees themselves as advocates rather than as reporters of facts this won’t change and I see no indication or reason for this to happen anytime soon.
