RS. McCain latest chapter in his unpublished web book All Girls named Tonya (and other lessons of a misspent youth) does several interesting things:

As the title suggests it will discourage millions of young boys from trying to own a tropical island:

In the first paragraph, this story has already destroyed the fantasies of millions of 14-year-old geeks around the world. “You mean, even if I become so rich that I’ve got my own private tropical island, I don’t get to have sex with any 22-year-old woman I desire?” Disturbing.

Later on he he tells a basic truth that all husbands know today’s second reading not withstanding:

The business about demanding that the chick “get naked”? That’s never worked for me. I’ve been married for 20 years, and if I demanded that my wife “get naked,” she’d laugh in my face.

No wonder the short form of today’s reading (Ephesins 5:21-33) left out verses 22-24. (I will post on that later today)

The third section is however the most important and should be read by every teenage boy alive today:

For the benefit of any young people (or 52-year-old show-business superstars) forced to sort out the new rules for themselves in this disturbing environment, allow me to offer a few suggestions by way of etiquette:

* In general, be careful about situations where you are alone with a person of the opposite sex….

…* Guys, a selfish attitude about sex is self-defeating…

* OK, the girl’s accepted your invitation. You might be in luck. But you’ve got to play it cool. She shows up, and you greet her with courtesy and hospitality. (“Would you like a delicious cold beverage? I’ve got some wine coolers here in the fridge . . .”)

* Don’t move too fast. Unless she’s totally making the moves on you, chill out and read her signals. If she just wants to talk, just talk. No pressure, see? This girl’s got friends, and you don’t want her telling her friends that you’re such a desperate loser that you started making the moves on her and she turned you down. The key to developing a reputation as irresistible is to avoid provoking resistance.

* If you’re going to make a move, make a move. Forget that slowly-work-your-way-up-to-it approach. Assuming you’re reading the signals correctly, a green light means “go.” Chicks dig the bold proposition. Take her in your arms and tell her you’ve been burning with desire for her ever since the first time you saw her. Gently kiss her neck and whisper your passionate intention to ravish every inch of her glorious naked body.

* Be willing to take no for an answer and to apologize for any unintended offense. Hey, even an ace pilot sometimes accidentally locks onto the wrong target, OK? This girl came over to your dorm room to study for the art history exam and when she started talking suggestively about Michelangelo’s David, you took it the wrong way. It happens.

Chicks sometimes aren’t so clear about the signals they send. My senior year in college, on the afternoon of a big concert on the quad, a girlfriend of my girlfriend came over to my dorm room. Lucy kissed me, got completely naked and still ended up saying, “no,” an answer I was obliged to accept.

I never forgave Lucy for that — which is why I feel no compunction about naming her — but I had to accept itemphasis mine.

It reminds me of two scenes From 1940’s The Philadelphia story:

And the resolution that comes at 7:00 of this clip although the whole thing is worth your time.

The laws might be different but if you live by the classic rules of Jimmy Stewart in 1940’s by the pool and R.S. McCain from the 1970’s in Room 215 Patterson Hall then everyone will be better off, especially you.

Update 2: Ancient Roman villas and hundreds of slaves work too.

Update 3: If the article doesn’t discourage conservative geeks from shooting for a private tropical island, photo confirmation that Mary Katherine Ham has a significant other is sure to do it.

…have a problem with this video?

Context is everything here. You are dealing with a pair of apparently superficial people who can’t get along. They are smug, they are smarky and they think they know it all…

THEN they need protection and they find themselves needing that woman with the shotgun to keep them alive. The “Oh my God it’s Sarah Palin” clip is exactly the reaction a pair of liberals might have, but they know that they need a Sarah Palin to keep them alive. When put in a different world they can’t cope.

I think it’s a perfect illustration of the reality.

When we whine about this kind of stuff we look not very much like the acolytes of the One. If that doesn’t scare you, it should.

Unlike some others guys like Professor Banbridge or Allahpundit are allies to be eventually persuaded and given time Sarah Palin’s performance will do so.

I’ve always maintained the right thing is usually the smart thing. The treating professor Bainbridge as “unclean” is not only wrong; it’s stupid.

A leader is known not only by who they are but by who follows them, to wit:

If we take our cues from the cult of Obama then our candidate will not only lose but it will be our fault, not hers.

(And yes this is in the free speech category. If a conservative is not allowed to disagree with Sarah Palin, I’d call that a free speech issue)

Update: This is exactly what I’m talking about:

You would think that any effort to reform our health care system would include tort reform, especially if the stated purpose for Obama’s plan to nationalize our health care industry is the current high costs.

So I have new questions for the president: Why no legal reform? Why continue to encourage defensive medicine that wastes billions of dollars and does nothing for the patients? Do you want health care reform to benefit trial attorneys or patients?

Many states, including my own state of Alaska, have enacted caps on lawsuit awards against health care providers. Texas enacted caps and found that one county’s medical malpractice claims dropped 41 percent, and another study found a “55 percent decline” after reform measures were passed. [4] That’s one step in health care reform. Limiting lawyer contingency fees, as is done under the Federal Tort Claims Act, is another step. The State of Alaska pioneered the “loser pays” rule in the United States, which deters frivolous civil law suits by making the loser partially pay the winner’s legal bills. Preventing quack doctors from giving “expert” testimony in court against real doctors is another reform.

The most effective advocate for Sarah Palin is her own good sense.

The reason why I don’t liveblog Morning Joe anymore is stuff like this.

Republican Joe Scarborough purported to have his finger on the pulse of Republicans across the country today when he declared that they were uniformly rejecting Sarah Palin and her “hard, hard, hard right” conservative views.

Conservatives for Palin elaborates:

The Democratic controlled Senate Finance Committee didn’t seem to think the “death panels” were so ridiculous when they removed the provision from the Senate version of the health care bill.

Is there an agenda here?

Joe Scarborough ignored Governor Palin’s meticulously cited statements and thoughtful arguments, and went directly to the same false stereotypes that are frequently repeated on liberal blogs…

Scarborough’s agenda became clear when he said, “She ain’t going to burn up Iowa anymore”. He would like to present himself and his political philosophy as the correct alternative to “extreme right wingers” like Sarah Palin.

Well lets see if his book is the alternate opinion based on his Amazon Sales rank today

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #28,738 in Books

That’s after two months, how about looking at that inciter of people Mark Levin he likes Palin?

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #31 in Books

That’s after 5 months, how about Dick Morris who I’m not a big fan of myself:

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #47 in Books

Dick’s book came out two weeks after Joe, How about Michelle?

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #14 in Books

Her book is a month old, and finally how about Glenn Beck, he must be tanking with all those boycotts right?

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #9 in Books

That one came out within 3 days of your book didn’t it Joe?

Well it’s not as if she can stay on offense against this administration since the people don’t support her, oh wait:

For years, states rich with an abundance of oil and natural gas have been begging Washington, DC politicians for the right to develop their own natural resources on federal lands and off shore. Such development would mean good paying jobs here in the United States (with health benefits) and the resulting royalties and taxes would provide money for federal coffers that would potentially off-set the need for higher income taxes, reduce the federal debt and deficits, or even help fund a trillion dollar health care plan if one were so inclined to support such a plan.

So why is it that during these tough times, when we have great needs at home, the Obama White House is prepared to send more than two billion of your hard-earned tax dollars to Brazil so that the nation’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, can drill off shore and create jobs developing its own resources? That’s all Americans want; but such rational energy development has been continually thwarted by rabid environmentalists, faceless bureaucrats and a seemingly endless parade of lawsuits aimed at shutting down new energy projects.

I wonder if this is going to get coverage Joe? Likely a lot more than your book.

Update: Joe I hate to tell you this, you have the symptoms of Sullivan’s Syndrome. Seek help now

Update 2: I’ve added some links to coverage of Palin’s latest facebook and will continue to do so as the day goes on.

Update: 3 Marx doesn’t compete too well either

At Beliefnet Michael Ruse has a pretty good argument on Atheism and the what his fellow non-believers should and should not be doing. It’s worth a read but what jumped out at me was his addressing a particular pet peeve of mine:

I often refer to myself as a very conservative non-believer, meaning that I take seriously my non-belief and I think others should do (and often don’t). If someone goes to the Episcopal Church for social or family reasons, or because they love the music or ceremonies, I have no trouble with that. Had I married a fellow Quaker, I might still be going to Quaker meetings. But I have little time for someone who denies the central dogmas of Christianity and still claims to be a Christian, except in a social sense. No God, no Jesus as His son, no resurrection, no eternal life – no Christianity.emphasis mine

In the Catholic Church we see groups like this a lot from the pseudo women priests fringe groups to Catholics for Choice to the Tablet in England and Catholics United etc etc etc…

If you don’t want to be a Catholic fine; There are plenty of Christian Churches you can join. If you don’t believe in the divinity of Christ you aren’t a Christian and you are a liar and a phony if you call yourself one.

Don’t be lukewarm, remember Laodicea:

To the angel of the church in Laodicea, write this: ” ‘The Amen, the faithful and true witness, the source of God’s creation, says this: “I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, ‘I am rich and affluent and have no need of anything,’ and yet do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich, and white garments to put on so that your shameful nakedness may not be exposed, and buy ointment to smear on your eyes so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. ” ‘”Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (then) I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me. I will give the victor the right to sit with me on my throne, as I myself first won the victory and sit with my Father on his throne.” ‘”Whoever has ears ought to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”‘” Revelation 3:14-22

The Church’s job like our lady’s is to keep you out of the fire. If that’s what you want, Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular is the place to be.

If that’s not what you want or believe then have the courage of your convictions to not play games. If you aren’t sure then use the vast sources of information on both sides to help you. After all you have the freedom to choose whatever path you want for yourself; use it. You have the rest of your life to figure things out…

…after that you’re on your own.
