New Numbers how about that!

You might recall this post from last week:

Now Arlen Specter is a totally different story, he is not only vulnerable to pressure but we have candidates such as Rick Santorum or Pat Toomey ready who can beat him in a primary is we put in the effort. That is where the direction should lie. The reports that no republican wants to be vote 60 is certainly referring to Specter.

Via Glenn: National Review points out that the withdrawal of Gregg suddenly drops the cover provided.

I’ll be taping a Red Meat in a few moments with Mark, but we just realized that while passage of the stimulus is still all but certain, Gregg’s return to the Senate—and his likely “no” vote—makes the vote on final passage a bit more interesting.

It passed last time with 61 votes. But this time, Kennedy will not be there.

I actually think this is a non-story. Snowe and Collins are not going anywhere, and the democrats will wheel Kennedy out to vote in a hospital bed is if they have to.

Civil disobedience vs giving in

Looks like Civil disobedience paid off for the Sheehan family even if it cost them 100k in fines:

Although Liam Sheahan’s 2002 decision to disregard planning laws and bulldoze 250 trees on his hilltop property hurt his family financially and emotionally, he believes it helped save them and their home on the weekend.

“The house is safe because we did all that,” he said as he pointed out his kitchen window to the clear ground where tall gum trees once cast a shadow on his house.

“We have got proof right here. We are the only house standing in a two-kilometre area.”

And those who obeyed the law? They had this reaction before their council:

“We’ve lost two people in my family because you dickheads won’t cut trees down,” he said.

“We wanted trees cut down on the side of the road … and you can’t even cut the grass for God’s sake.”

But hey whats a few dead Australians if we can feel good about our selves as environmentalists right? And our green friends have wasted no time in using the deadly fires to promote their global warming ponzi scheme.

The entire global warming business is just a modern version of buying indulgences without any benefits to an actual soul.

I was listening to Fr. Corapi who stated in one of his talks about spiritual warfare that once you become a threat to Satan you become a target.

Judging from some of the comments at this YouTube video this young lady is a threat indeed.

Via Hotair: Much more positive commentary here, here, here, here and here.

If you want a message from an adult instead check this out via the raving atheist:

Update: Comments needed to be shut off on that youtube post:

We apologize for turning off the commenting functionality. This was not to stop genuine discussion or debate on the issue but was, rather, a response to the cowardly who used it as an opportunity to throw insults and threats at a young girl that they hated without reason. Thank-you to everyone who, whether in agreement or not, has responded in a respectful manner.

Must have been a lot of Huffington post commentators.

UPDATE: Welcome Don Suber readers. Take a peek around. Be amazed at the shock of Catholics being Catholic, See what a difference that $76 dollars will make, see how defying environmental rules can save your life see the president dance the little sidestep, and remember if you have need of remote tech support, I offer it here.

That’s how you do it

There is opinion and reality, a lot of people tend to confuse them. One of those people however is not Tom Switzer:

WHETHER it was worth doing remains highly doubtful, and how it will end remains to be seen. But it looks as if the US is achieving some kind of success in Iraq. That is quite a mouthful from someone who strongly opposed the war from the outset.

But these are the facts: Coalition military and Iraqi civilian casualties are down significantly. The level of violence is the lowest in six years. Iraq’s economic growth levels are today nearly one-third higher than under Saddam Hussein. The Sadrist militia and other Shia militant groups have been halted. The Sunni Arabs who once formed the heart of the Iraqi insurgency are among the most steadfast coalition allies in the battle against al-Qa’ida. The sectarian civil war has ended.

Note that this doesn’t effect his opinion on the war itself:

Now I’ve long believed the Iraq invasion was unnecessary. The incompetence of president George W. Bush, and in particular the neo-conservative architects of this misbegotten venture – which has cost the US dearly in not just blood and treasure but also prestige and credibility – merely adds underlining and an exclamation point. Any threat that Saddam posed could have been dealt with via the tried and tested policy of containment (UN sanctions, naval blockade, no-fly zone).

I think that opinion is dead wrong but it is an opinion that a reasonable person can hold. Yet he doesn’t allow that opinion to change his perception of facts on the ground.

The final line says it all.

… for now, as the largely violence-free weekend elections demonstrated, the situation on the ground has improved dramatically. Too bad many opponents of the war won’t concede that simple fact.

One who can see how things are is worthy of respect.
