I’m done with Steele

In Robert Caro’s first volume on Lyndon Johnson: The Path to Power there was a line that was used to describe Lyndon Johnson in his early political years:

Lyndon goes the way the wind blows

Apparently on Abortion as the American Spectator reports so does Michael Steele.

But the reality of Steele is quite different. He is proving himself to be a shape shifter who is trying to please everybody, but in the end delivering a completely muddled message. Ultimately no pro-choice independent or Democrat is going to be more inclined to become a Republican as a result of that GQ interview, because Steele comes off like a bumbling clown who is trying to have it both ways. The mere fact that we have to have a whole debate over what he means demonstrates that he’s doing a terrible job at communicating. And lest we forget, communication was supposed to be his strong suit.

That is the political reason for rejecting him. Captain Ed agrees:

I have seen the man speak with conviction and passion at conservative events and leave everyone mightily impressed, but now we have to wonder whether Steele just tailored the message for the audience, as he appears to have done with Hughley and GQ. I don’t necessarily buy that, as he has easier ways to get media air time than being in the Republican Party, but it’s hard not to ask the question these days.

One thing is certain: he’s a lot less media savvy than most of us thought. And since he doesn’t seem to have much skill in organization, we have to ask ourselves why we should support his continued tenure as RNC chair.

You tell me what pro life person is going to give to the Republican National Committee with him in charge?

Some National Review readers are a little more flexible but on this subject a Catholic can’t be. I’ve seen enough “Roman Catholics” who are personally opposed to abortion but vote the other way. I can’t stomach it. If Mr. Steele doesn’t have the courage of his convictions to stand up for his own expressed beliefs I have no use for him. I suggest he take advantage of the Lenten season to avail himself of the sacrament.

I don’t think he will last to the end of next week. It’s just an amazing bit of timing that Rush is off the air for the next two days when this is happening.

Rush is being slightly disingenuous…

….when he talks about the Federalist papers and the separation of powers.

Not that he is incorrect when he talks about it. That is exactly right this was what the founding fathers intended and slowing this stuff down is the proper function of the senate…

…However I do recall back in 2002-2004 Rush complaining about the senate obstructing the will of the people when certain Bush era items were being pushed. I confess I don’t recall the exact items that were being pushed but I do remember the argument that the house reflects the current will of the people, and that is certainly correct. President Obama could make that same argument if he wanted to.

He didn’t quote those particular parts of the federalist papers at that time, although he often did quote other parts of them in other matters.

Oh and if you’ve never read the Federalist Papers you should.

The War on Limbaugh News from the Front

All I need is a podium with an EIB symbol in front of it.

Hot Air reports that the mainstream media has confirmed the politico story about Rush’s attack being planned:

And for that matter, why didn’t the New York Times report this separately? The White House has ginned up an attack machine to pillory Rush Limbaugh, but meanwhile dozens of high-level appointments have yet to be made at Treasury. They’re too overwhelmed to figure out correct protocol for Gordon Brown’s visit (and too busy to offer decent gifts), but they have the time to coordinate attacks on a radio-show host.

That’s an interesting set of priorities — for both Obama and the New York Times.

Well after all we do know who America’s foes are.

National Review and Newsbusters notes David Frum’s new found popularity:

First Newsbusters:

Appearing on Hardball to plug his anti-Limbaugh Newsweek article denotes that Frum knew he would be addressing not only the Obama White House but also the mainly liberal fans of MSNBC.

If Frum was truly interested in endearing his article to a right of center audience, obviously, he would have been all over Fox News before he went to MSNBC. Just the fact that Frum wrote his piece in Newsweek and not a conservative publication will make conservatives wonder if Frum will do a political 180 a la Arianna Huffington.

Then National Review:

This is really shameful. But at least we’re starting to get the formula down: If you don’t talk about race, you’re a coward; if you talk about it a little, you’re a racist; if you talk about it incessantly over the course of a career, you could become Attorney General, President, or even get your own MSNBC gab-fest; and if you talk about Rush Limbaugh talking about race, you’re a media darling.

Anyone who actually listens to Rush’s show knows he’s the anti-racist. He wants a color-blind society where everyone is on the level playing field of merit and your dignity is a function of your humanity, not your race. Martin Luther King spoke of being judged by the content of our character rather than the color of our skin. How appalling that, 40 years later, a guy who heeds that message is deemed by the media and the rest of the Left to have a “race problem.”

But in those circles, Frum now has no problem. The ring-master cracked his whip, the sea lion flopped around with the race-ball on his nose, and everyone oohed and ahhed. Then Matthews decreed, “Well, you know what I said when I came out here, David. You have changed your life with this article. You will be the man that shot Liberty Valance. You will be the guy that took on Rush Limbaugh.” Congratulations. He must be very proud.

and lets not forget Steyn:

David Frum has now gleefully iterated his complaint about Rush’s personal failings in at least three places – his own website, The National Post of Canada, and Newsweek. The last was certainly a mistake, because it’s no friend to the conservative cause and thus makes David look far guiltier of the sin he keeps accusing Rush of – putting his own interests ahead of the party’s. (Not true, by the way: Rush has all the money he’ll ever need and in the years ahead Obama’s going to be siphoning off as much as he can. If ever there were a time to retire to the Caribbean, this is it.)

I have Mr. Frum’s book on president Bush The Right Man, I’m sure his next book will have a whole new audience, who needs us fans of Rush and Sarah. I’d be really interested in hearing what the Ex president had to say about this.

Howard Dean thinks it time to stop talking about Rush Limbaugh and then proceeds to do so:

Mr. Dean told The Times it was “an embarrassment” and “ridiculous” that Mr. Steele felt he had to apologize to Mr. Limbaugh.

He said he can’t blame Mr. Steele, adding as the leader of the Republicans he shouldn’t have to apologize for pointing out the party’s sorry shape.

Later in the same article Robert Gibbs is asked a question:
chickensuit

As White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs left the briefing room Monday, a reporter asked about the radio host.

“You are willing to debate Limbaugh now, aren’t you?” the reporter said, referring to Mr. Limbaugh’s challenge to debate Mr. Obama.

Mr. Gibbs drew laughs with his reply: “I’m busy this afternoon.”

It is now 6 days since Rush Limbaugh offered to give the president 3 hours on his show to debate him.

War on terror: Lets talk, War on Rush lets attack.

Today on Morning Joe Barnicle said something that deserves its own post.

All over the world we see this administration talking. Syria, Iran, perhaps Cuba and the Taliban and maybe even Hamas are worthy of negotiation they are to be engaged. The fact they at least three of them are directly involved in killing Americans notwithstanding.

Rush Limbaugh who generates revenue and income for Americans all over the country by his successful radio show. He can’t be debated or attacked he must be destroyed.

Obama and our friends on the left know who America’s true foes are, but just a thought. If Rush wants Obama to “fail” and Iran, Taliban, Cuba, Syria et/al don’t what does that tell you?

UPDATE: You can add Jim Cramer to that 2nd list.
