Going over the press’ feeding frenzy over the Pope’s decision some things struck me:

If Williamson had been an Iman the press coverage of him would either be non-existent or be considered a hate crime in Canada, Sweden and Holland. It would be really nice if just once the antisemitism in Islam got a tiny bit of attention.

Have you noticed that on any given week you can find a story that starts with “Pope’s decision/action on” and ends with “criticized”. You can bank on this with the media. In fact You can see the same thing with “Israel decision/action on” “criticized” the same way with the same media. All the “beautiful” people seem to hate both. Then again the pope is unlikely to cut off anyone’s head, nor is Israel. (This comes under my “indirect proofs” theory concerning God and Catholicism).

Other than Charles Johnson I haven’t seen anyone mention the truther/Kennedy conspiracy stuff in reports. These are things that the media doesn’t want to touch for some reason.

And speaking of this stuff have you ever noticed that people never seem to believe in only one conspiracy? On occasion they might be short one but they never believe in only one. Sort of like a Lays commercial.

You know just once in one of those dramas where the lone cop is cautioned by their higher ups about being wrong or the doctor who defies all convention over an odd diagnosis or the investigator who is so convinced that that guy is innocent if they were actually wrong once on the screen itself and then have them deal with that over and over during the rest of the season.

Everyone knows that they are wrong sometimes, but they never know it at the actual time they are wrong.

There is no darker time then the time between the last game of the World Series and the begining of spring training.

Once you reach a particular age a rather large percentage of your social calendar is spent at funerals.

And you know you are getting old when your regular doctor is younger than you. Once that happens its very rare that it changes.

Speaking of Chips once Cape Cod Chips came out suddenly everybody had kettle cooked chips for sale, that’s how you know your product is good.

How do you know times are bad? The wonder bread thrift store. The guy who runs it tells me his business is up 40%.

How many of studies that we hear about on the news actually pan out? Someone should do a study on it.

100 years from now people will still be laughing at the three stooges.

There is nothing that brings inner peace more than sitting in a room with your spouse, even if you aren’t doing or watching the same thing. I don’t know how widows or widower’s handle it.

Do you remember what you did with your time 20 years ago when you didn’t have a PC or internet to play with? It’s almost like that time didn’t happen isn’t it?

I still have high hopes that I will be able to make it to 50 without a cell phone, if I can make it to 60 without one it would be even cooler.

And finally I noticed this on election day. If you spend 8 hours watchhing traffic you will be shocked at how many accidents don’t happen.

It’s Henderson and Rice

Rickey Henderson in his first eligible year and Jim Rice in his last have both been elected to the Hall of Fame.

Henderson snagged 94.8% showing that Corky Simpson was not alone and should have taken my advice.

Rice made it in with 76.4 eeking in by 7 votes. This mean that other the war years Boston Red Sox had a Hall of Famer starting in left field in Fenway from 1939-1987. (Williams and Yaz being the others) a period of 43 years.

If you include Manny (who will certainly make the hall) that for the last 70 years 1939-2008 the Red Sox primary starting left fielder was a Hall of Famer 73% of the time(51 years). It would be interesting to see if any other team had a Hall of Famer for such a sustained period at one position.

Tommy John will have to wait for the Vets committee.

Update: Baseball musings mentions something about Rice that drove me nuts too:

but he would also drive me nuts in the following situation. The pitcher would be wild, walking Boggs and Barrett on eight straight pitches. Rice would come up, and he had to be thinking, “This pitcher has to throw me a strike.” He’d swing at the first pitch and ground into a double play. I really wanted him to let the pitcher fall behind in the count first, but Jim liked swinging early in that situation.

Yup that’s why I think it took the 15th ballot.

Baseball crank has thoughts and hopes it doesn’t help Dawson. I think the gold gloves speak volumes for him.

Still time to vote at Newsday

The Baseball Hall of Fame voting is being announced today. via Baseball musings there is still time to vote in Newsday’s poll before it happens.

I voted for Henderson, Blyleven, Dawson, Murphy and Rice.

Toughest exclusions John, Raines.

Who I would have liked to vote for because they are personal favorites but don’t deserve it, Baines and Trammell.

If the poll is correct then only Henderson gets in.

JV Hockey St. Bernards 0 Leominster 0

Went to the Steve’s son’s JV game it was a mass of action.

The fact that Leominster are the Blue Devils and St. Bernards are saints showed as the game was very physical.

There were some excellent hits but at times it seemed that Leominster was more interested in making hits than scoring. On at least two occasions a Leominster player out of position for a centering pass near the crease because he concentrated on a hit or a shove. first. #2 in particular seemed to manage a hit away from the puck hits at every chance. He must have thought he has Keith Magnison as the red hair was a giveaway. There was a fair amount of pressure on goal but St. B. Goal was equal to the task.

The real star of the game however was the goaltender of Leominster. St. Bernards had several excellent chances, 2 on ones, first rate centering passes and action near the crease. It seemed his body was everywhere. Even the St. Bernards fans were applauding
him as he made saves that nobody has any business making.

He was particularly fine late in the 3rd when St. B was working on a power play. Nothing was getting by them.

I was never much for schoolboy sports, but if this is any indication I think I’ll be attending more.
