…is that THIS was the year that the Colts were going to make their Superbowl run.

Let’s say something bluntly.

Until Tom Brady Goes down with an injury or until he suddenly falls off Max Kellerman’s Cliff nobody is going to the Superbowl in the AFC unless they are able to knock him off that perch.

Now it’s very possible that a Patrick Mahomes could do it, although given the improved Patriots defense it’s not a bet I’d risk a whole lot of money on

But if you think that Andrew Luck was going to be able to do it this year, that’s just crazy.

Not QUITE as crazy as the take I was hearing that Luck is more talented than Brady and the proof is that he was taken 1st over all vs 199th, but unlike the “Luck is better” argument it’s one I’ve heard every day since his retirement

Brady vs Luck One Hit Away

At the backup site I noted with Irony that Andrew Luck is retiring before Adam Vinatieri but his situation should be a reminder to Patriots fans in general and to Tom Brady in particular just how lucky we are.

As a rule in any sport, basketball, hockey, baseball and football etc an athlete is only one injury away from retirement, but in football this is more true than any other.

This is a sport where one is continually hit by extremely muscular people weighing 200 pounds or more if they’re small or 300+ pounds if they’re not and this takes place every 45 seconds for a period of 15 minutes. Often a person will be hit by more than one such man and it’s not uncommon for a person being hit to not see the person about to hit him until it happens.

Even with the new rules every single person on that field understands that they are one hit away from surgery and extensive rehab.

And that brings us to Tom Brady.

Tom Brady has been playing this game for 20 years and has had only one serious season ending injury in that time. That’s pretty good when you think about it, but he has been constantly on the field every other year. When he scrambled for a 1st down in last Thursday’s preseason game every single Patriots fan was asking himself “What are you doing, it doesn’t count!” but Brady being Brady knows that if he’s on the field he’s expected to play to win.

Yet he knows and most importantly his wife knows that each year the odds of an injury that will force him to live in pain for the rest of his life (presuming he already isn’t already living in pain every day) increases. That’s why his wife has been pressuring him toward retirement (I also suspect that such a compromise with her is the reason he no longer shows up to voluntary pre-season camps). Every single snap there is a tackle or a defensive end who dreams about wrapping him up and taking him down and if he scrambles for a 1st down those linebackers are not going to show him any mercy of deference, nor should they and in fact Brady would he expect them to do so.

I expect Brady to have a good year this year and likely a good year next year too but he has defined the odds, not only in terms of skill and victories but in terms of injury and that as much as all his other attributes is why is has managed to become the greatest player every to play his sport.

So was we wish the 29 year old Andrew Luck well, let us remember how lucky we have been to have a healthy Tom Brady leading our team to victory for two decades and be grateful for it.

I’m sure Tom Brady and his wife and family are.

Ok so you’re a football fan who’s thinking, Hey Tom Brady’s 41, he’s lost Gronk Edelman is hurt and Brady has bunch of no names for targets.  This is our best chance to finally get Brady out of the Superbowl and maybe even out of an AFC Championship game.

And then you hear this…

Josh Gordon’s wait is over.

The NFL announced Friday evening that the wide receiver’s filing for reinstatement has been granted on a conditional basis.

Gordon, who had been suspended indefinitely last December for violating the terms of his reinstatement under the substance-abuse policy, may rejoin the New England Patriots for meetings, conditioning work and individual workouts effective Sunday.

“We are all rooting for Josh to succeed, both personally and professionally,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement released by the league. “Everyone shares in that hope and will continue to support him to every extent possible. But as Josh acknowledged, ultimately his success is up to him.”

Now it’s true that Gordon has a history of failing in terms of his personal demons and there is every possibility that like last year he will not last a whole season and be there for a playoff run.

But every game he DOES suit up for is a game where the Patriots have a legitimate “A” level deep threat and playmaker.  Even worse from every other teams point of view  this isn’t like getting a stranger that has to be acclimated.  He has played with Brady and in this system.  Baring injury he can make a contribution at once.

Every game Gordon plays will make it one game harder to knock of the Pats and if he somehow manages to make it through the whole season and into the playoffs, he will be deadly, particularly once Edelman is back.  Who do you cover with your best guy?

A lot of primal screams are going out in AFC team locker rooms tonight.

Not alot of surprises under the fedora today

I’m typing this on Monday at my favorite lunch place that had CNN on one of their TV with no sound. They as you might guess are talking about the two shooters in Dayton and El Paso.

Whenever they mention the El Paso shooter the bar at the bottom speaks about his beliefs and reference Trump, however whenever they reference the Dayton shooter, a fan of Sanders and Warren & antifa they don’t.

No surprise

——————————————————-

On another TV they have international women’s volleyball. That might not have been a surprise except that instead of beach volleyball where the women are wearing nearly nothing it’s snow volleyball where the women are completely cover because, well it’s snow volleyball.

Yet the bar has it on.

Surprise.

———————————————————

Oddly enough at this bar none of the TVs are on channel’s talking about Tom Brady’s new contract giving the Pats the option to keep him through 2021, perhaps it’s because everyone was speculating about why Brady wasn’t signed and if the Patriots were finally moving on etc. I strongly suspect that the reason why it took so long for deal that it helped overshadow the 1st Patriots season post “happyending gate” but in the end the Patriots in general and their owner in particular decided it was a bad idea to send the NFL’s biggest cash cow to the glue factory

No surprise there.

——————————

Democrat candidates have “pounced” on this weekends shootings in the hopes of generating or sustaining buzz for their campaigns the same way I pounce on frozen Kentucky Derby pie when it’s in sight.

It will be no surprise to see the next debate featuring perhaps multiple questions to candidate linking the El Paso shooter (democrat though he is) to President Trump and candidate after candidate blaming the president for the shooters actions.

However it will be a great surprise if at that same debate they note the political beliefs of the Dayton shooter and ask either Senators Sanders or Warren who he expressed support for if they bear any responsibility for that shooter’s acts.

Now That would be a surprise

Finally for the last several months there have been a bunch of rabbits in the neighborhood. I think they’re been living under our low back deck and over that time a day rarely went by that I didn’t either leave for work or come back from work without seeing a rabbit sitting in the back yard waiting to see what direction I would go in.

Two days ago I saw a cat in the neighborhood for the 1st time in at least a year walking down the street by my driveway.

I haven’t seen a rabbit since.

no surprise there.
