One of the great things about upsets is the sheer joy of reading articles like this.

The Netherlands’ chances of advancing were slim to begin with, but when Jair Jurrjens chose not to participate, it left them with virtually no chance.

In under 24 hours they have gone from virtual no chance to one win away from advancing. Now lets look at the other end of the spectrum:

Even without Rodriguez, though, the Dominican team is loaded for manager Felipe Alou, who will field a lineup that still boasts the likes of Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, David Ortiz and Robinson Cano.

Ya think they might be calling for his head in the Dominican tonight. They certainly will be if they lose tomorrow afternoon against Panama.

Albert Pujols, Alfonso Soriano and Vladimir Guerrero all opted to skip the event.

You think those guys are going to hear about it if the Dominicans are bounced in round one? I think it will be rather nasty.

As it was a clutch situation I don’t know if A-Rod would have made a difference.

Japan has qualified for the 2nd round of the WBC with a 14-2 spanking of Korea. And China has bounced Taiwan with a 4-1 win.

Tomorrow morning we will see if Korea can get China out of the tourney or if the Chinese can begin their climb into baseball respectability.

Dutch over Dominicans 3-2!

If you didn’t catch my liveblogging your eyes are not deceiving you.

The Dominicans combined overconfidence and key errors with bad base running and some bad first pitch swinging to sink themselves.

The Dutch only managed 3 hits but played excellent defense, and clutch pitching. The Dutch closer Boyd walked two but had one man thrown out trying to steal 3rd and stuck out the last man standing.

If this isn’t one of the biggest upsets in baseball history I’d like to know what is. The only thing that could be bigger is if Italy beats Hugo Chavez’s boys tonight.

I can’t believe David pinto was stuck on a Panel somewhere and missed it.

Update: The headline at the classic website says it all: International incident: Dutch stun Dominicans. There should be dancing in the Netherlands tonight! (except in the parts where Imans won’t allow it.)
