Major Hogan: [tosses a coin to Sharpe] What’s that, Sharpe?

Richard Sharpe: A shilling, sir.

Major Hogan: The King’s Shilling, Sharpe. Our last shilling. London’s late, the Army’s broke, and we owe the lads two months’ wages… What do you do when you’re out of cash, Sharpe?

Richard Sharpe: Do without, sir.

Sharpe’s Rifles 1993

Spent a day and a half with friends crashing over for a birthday (very odd to do so without DaWife, it almost never happens) so I’ve not been close to events over the last 48 hours so I was rather surprised when I walked into DaHouse this morning just after midnight, turned on the TV and saw this ad:

It’s a very clever ad and I endorse the sentiment expressed. A lot of other people must as well since they apparently sold 100,000 bars within 12 hours so I headed over to their web site to see what they were offering.

And that’s when I saw that their base chocolate bar was $6.99

$6.99? In contrast at my local market basket a Hershey’s bar goes for about $2.

Not to worry though you can choose to order 4 bars and pay$25 or $6.25 a bar

or if that’s too much you can buy 10 bars and pay $45.99 or $4.59 a bar

but the real bargain is a 24 pack which sets you back $100. So not only are you only paying a 25% premium to tweak Hershey but you get free shipping unlike those previous orders that don’t get to the $80 free shipping threshold.

You know I’m not a fan of wokeness but most normal Americans can’t afford to spend $100 on chocolate. That’s three water bills, or 3/4 of an electric bill or 2 1/2 fill ups of my car. I’m not going to blow that amount on candy just to poke these guys in the eye.

Apparently a lot of guys can and if Jeremy’s can find people in this economy who can, more power to them that’s free enterprise.

Me I’ll just buy a different brand without the 350% premium or do without. Just as effective but without the capital outlay.

One of the first things I saw when I woke up today was this poll concerning Donald Trump’s CPAC speech:

It’s a tough call, Trump’s instinct is to always on the attack but the smart move is not to do so, particularly in this setting where there is a real chance of being booed for it.

There is however a rather obvious trick he can play here.

The MSM has ever since the end of the 2016 election studiously avoided covering Trump speeches live. Doing so negates their ability to spin him as people can hear him in his own words directly.

If I was the Trump camp I’d leak out that he’s planning to hit DeSantis hard and see if it coaxes the MSM to carry the speech live.

If they do so then I’d give a strong stump speech contrasting the Trump Years with the Biden years and hitting old Joe hard and strong, I’d also note the difference between mandates and no mandates because if he’s the nominee that’s what they’ll hit him on.

If at the very end he wants to throw them a bone he can close with something spin-able like “I have a proven record of fighting these guys at the Federal Level and still getting things done. If you re-elect me that’s what I’ll do again.”

Anyways that’s how I’d play it.

How he should manage DeSantis, already answered that here.

It doesn’t matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are. If it doesn’t agree with experiment, it’s wrong.

Richard Feynman

If you want to see a contrast of what Science vs what “The Science” is you can’t do better than contrasting these words from scientist Richard Dawkins declaring :

The true reason science is more than an origin myth is that it stands on evidence: massively documented evidence, double blind trials, peer review, quantitative predictions precisely verified in labs around the world. Science reads the billion-word DNA book of life itself. Science eradicates smallpox and polio. Science navigates to Pluto or a tiny comet. Science almost certainly saved your life. Science works.

He notes that in speaking up for science (and those who suffer for professing it) he is fulfilling an obligation

We who don’t have a career to lose should speak out in defence of those who do. The magnificent seven are branded heretics by a nastily zealous new religion, a witch-hunt that recalls the false accusations against J.K. Rowling and Kathleen Stock. Professor Kendall Clements was removed from teaching evolution at the University of Auckland, after the School of Biological Sciences Putaiao Committee submitted the following recommendation: ‘We do not feel that either Kendall or Garth should be put in front of students as teachers. This is not safe for students…’ Not safe? Who are these cringing little wimps whose ‘safety’ requires protection against free speech? What on earth do they think a university is for?

Dawkins who is famous for his atheism closes his statement noting a double standard

Postscript on the flight out: Air New Zealand think it a cute idea to invoke Māori gods in their safety briefing. Imagine if British Airways announced that their planes are kept aloft by the Holy Ghost in equal partnership with Bernoulli’s Principle and Newton’s First Law.

Shades of Calvin Robinson’s incredible speech at Oxford where he notes that nobody is calling on Islam to change their scripture to accommodate gay marriage.

Now contrast this to this story from 10 years ago supposedly before the war on science began publicly in earnest:

Scientists working on the most authoritative study on climate change were urged to cover up the fact that the world’s temperature hasn’t risen for the last 15 years, it is claimed.

A leaked copy of a United Nations report, compiled by hundreds of scientists, shows politicians in Belgium, Germany, Hungary and the United States raised concerns about the final draft.

Take a look at the article and note how they are all afraid of the data leading people to a different conclusion than they wish and realize that our opponents have been fighting this culture war a long time before we have.

So the next time someone tells you not to fight the culture war note that the only difference between the culture wars now and the culture war 20 years ago is that we’re finally fighting back.

A lot to do this morning so three quick things.

If you’re the least bit of a Trek fan you will want to take 20 minutes and watch Ladd Ehlinger’s bit on Star Trek 2 as the counter Trek that saved the franchise.

I can’t like and subscribe as I’m banned from Youtube but if you’re in a position to do so you can.

The Don Surber blog is still up but they’re already digging out old posts to give his strikes on (basically how they killed me on Youtube) but his substack account has been putting out winners daily including today’s post: “Invest in New Mexico, not Ukraine” which produced my pick for the “Quote of the Day”

Oddly enough, Biden’s sanctions pushed Putin to seek Xi’s help, reversing Nixon’s successful strategy of pitting the USSR against Red China. But then again, Biden has been wrong on every foreign policy for 50 years.

I say oddly because I do not know if this was the true goal of Biden because I don’t know who offered the bigger bribe.

Don is definitely worth a subscription if you can afford it you might consider a paid one.

Finally I don’t do a lot of tip jar shaking and given the state of DaTipJar it shows but let me instead make a pitch in a different direction.

Old Friend Zilla could use a buck or two. We’re hoping the bring here back here and she is trying to very slowing rebuild a life that has, to put it mildly, been shaken up

The tip jar has not gone up on the new site but it works fine on her old one so if you can top over and drop a fiver in there I’d consider it a favor but not as big a favor as she would .
