After seeing this post I’m going to create the Jon Pertwee Frontier in Space award. Hopefully to be less necessary than the nelson.

Some things are beyond the pale

You know oppression, thuggishness, injustice and confiscation of property is one thing but some things are just beyond what can be allowed in civilized society:

Robert Mugabe is reported to own long-lost episodes of Doctor Who.

The President of Zimbabwe apparently possesses tapes of some early episodes of the science fiction series that could be thirty or forty years old, according to The Sun.

Some Doctor Who programmes were deleted by the BBC in the late sixties and seventies to make room in the Beeb’s film library for new shows and Zimbabwe is thought to have bought the first season of the time-travel series when it was still the British colony Rhodesia.

Mugabe intends to keep it that way:

President Robert Mugabe has banned BBC personnel from entering the country, which has reportedly led the corporation to fear that they might never retrieve the missing serials.

Oh the humanity!

This episode is clearly a comedy but the comedy doesn’t come at a cost of some high drama. There are also many plot twists that will keep you on your toes. Fans of the reclusive leftist will like one particular aspect concerning Erimem and broken arms. One twist involves a technical violation of the license agreement between Big Finish and the BBC:

The terms of our licence with the BBC allow us to only produced ‘Classic’ Doctor Who. This means that we can only use the first eight Doctors and their companions. Anything connected to the new series – even characters who are no longer featured – cannot be used by us in a Big Finish Doctor Who production.

The violation is rather small and very amusing. As the BBC gave them a new license it apparently was a big deal to them however for us Dr. Who fans it adds up to a big smile.

This is the first of Two regular Doctor Who adventures that cross over with the Bernice Summerfield adventures. It hasn’t persuaded me to go chasing after them. They do actually predate the Dr. Who audios slightly (1 year). I suspect it is a matter of taste.

The casual decision reaction to death and mayhem even for the 7th doctor doesn’t seem to be in character. I wouldn’t suggest starting with this one.
