Archive for the ‘politics’ Category

One of my pet peeves is politics is the idea that you can’t be tough on a woman in a debate or candidate forum. I’ve seen questions and commentary for years where people go after men for being too tough on a woman during a debate, in an attack ad etc etc etc.

This just drives me nuts. If a person is competing for a political position, they are competing for a position, not as a “man” or a “woman” but as a citizen. I expect any candidate running for public office to be able to take it. This isn’t beanbag, a public office is a public trust and nobody is going to hold your hand when the going gets rough.

You can either serve in the office or not, you can either take the heat or you can not and if you can’t then do something else.

(BTW the quote above is from an issue of the Justice League from the 80’s. There was a character called Booster Gold who was from the future. During one of the fights of heroes vs villains, a female villain is cornered by Booster Gold, strikes a very feminine pose and asks: “You wouldn’t hit a woman would you?” He says, well you see… the next panel is the word BAM and the third panel is him giving that explanation in the title to the now floored villain who groggily answers: “Thanks for explaining that to me.”)

My youngest is not old enough to vote yet but my oldest is. (His first ballot cast was for Scott Brown).

He asked me if government would just raise other taxes if Question 3 is passed, so I gave him the easiest explanation I could give, government is like his younger brother. To wit:

  • Me: “If you give your brother $20 how much of it will he spend?”
  • Oldest: “$20”
  • Me: “If you give your brother $10 how much of it will he spend?”
  • Oldest: “$10”
  • Me: “So if you don’t want your brother to blow his money, do you give him a $20 or a $10?”
  • Oldest: I guess I’ll vote “Yes” on question 3.

It’s all in the presentation

Peter Durant spoke to me in the WCRN studios:

A real measure of the Big Red wave in Massachusetts will be the success of campaigns like his for State Rep

Liz Carter (Ga-4) at Candidate Forum

You might recall back in May I took a trip to Ga-4 to cover the republican primary race as Liz Carter faced 3 other opponents and won the Republican nomination outright to face Hank Johnson in the general election.

In a district that with a black majority, who went for president Obama with one of the largest margins in the nation and that was represented by Cynthia McKinney the election of a white republican woman would be considered impossible, but Liz has fought hard and not conceded a single vote.

On her blog today she shows the FCC report for the campaign and there is a perfect illustration of the difference between republicans and democrats therein.

More democratic Deficit spending

Johnson is a well liked sitting congressman in a majority black district. Liz Carter is a republican who is fighting the good fight in a district as blue as the state of Massachusetts, yet not only has she out-raised Congressman Johnson during the October home stretch but Her campaign is running a $6500 surplus while Congressman Johnson is running a deficit of over $24,000.

Tell me who would you rather have managing your tax dollars?
