Humor and politics

Dick Tuck was a political operative I met in the 1970s in Washington, D.C., and I later reconnected with him in the 1990s in New York City.

During his years as a campaign aide to the Democratic National Committee, Tuck became Richard Nixon’s nemesis.

In 1962, Tuck worked for Pat Brown in the gubernatorial campaign that Nixon tried to win after losing the presidential race to JFK two years earlier.

At a fundraiser in Chinatown in Los Angeles, Nixon was confused when the guests started to smile during his presentation. Tuck had snuck in fortune cookies that read: “Vote for Pat Brown.” During a whistle-stop campaign, Tuck ordered the train to start moving in the middle of Nixon’s speech. Nixon even complained about Tuck in the infamous Watergate tapes.

Whatever the case, Tuck brought humor to campaigns—a device sadly missing in today’s venomous political scene.

Rand Paul brought back memories of Dick Tuck when the Kentucky senator brought some humor to Washington during a speech about wasteful spending.

To make his points, Paul displayed several poster boards about specific research projects that he said taxpayers would be astounded to know their tax dollars were funding.

Among the projects he highlighted were: $357,000 to study “Cocaine and Risky Sex Habits of Quail” and $1.6 million for researching “Lizards on a Treadmill.”

One poster board featured legendary singer Dolly Parton to highlight that Uncle Sam is spending $250,000 to send “kids in Pakistan to Space Camp and Dollywood.” Another claimed the National Science Foundation spent $700,000 to figure out whether astronaut Neil Armstrong said: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” or “One small step for ‘a’ man.”

Paul said Americans might be alarmed by such frivolous studies, but it happens routinely “because we never vote for less money. It’s always more. Somebody’s got to point out that the waste and abuse of money goes on.”

Paul’s hilarious and poignant rant reminded me of U.S. Senator William Proxmire of Wisconsin and his Golden Fleece Award, which he gave to public officials squandering public money in the 1970s and 1980s.

I hope that Paul continues the tradition of humor in politics, which seems far more effective than the vitriol we’ve seen in recent years.

Well I’ve got some bad news and some worse news.

The bad news is, as you’ve likely already noticed is that my main site is down and now has been for about two days. I have no idea what the problem is as it just dropped sometime Sunday while I was at work (I have a 10 hour shift on Sundays and get home sometime in the AM on Mondays).

The worse news is that my hosting service people have apparently disappeared.

The previous owner of the company who gave great personal service has sold the company and is enjoying a well earned retirement all my attempts to contact the new ownership over this outage have been thus far in vain.

There are several odd coincidences in this timing

  1. I had just returned to the podcast after a month off again remaining a rather outspoken advocate of the position that the last election was stolen.
  2. After ignoring things for a long time I finally email blasted my readers to let them know I’m still here just a few days ago.
  3. Yesterday I had planned to post on a Catholic devotion that has been largely ignored that I am promulgating and hoping to spread to the faithful.
  4. At the same time I have having issues with email from multiple sources complicating everything.
  5. and of course I discovered it on Holiday when I was with my son for the whole day making follow-up complicated.

I find myself conflicted, I perceive that while I’ve been around a while & we do good work here we’re rather small fry both politically & spiritually but given my Sicilian heritage and what we’ve seen over the last 24 months my belief in coincidence is not what it once was.

So for now I’ll be posting here while I figure out what the next step is when I know something you will too.

The Saddest Pavolvian Sight

Yesterday was day one of no mask freedom in Massachusetts and so I decided to get to church to become free from sin as well.

As I was leaving church (I go to mass generally on Sunday) I was pleased to see a lady approaching without a mask and greeted her with the quip: “The only sad thing about not having to wear masks is now you can see if I forgot to shave.”

Instantly her face turned as she realized she didn’t have her mask on and she turned to her car to get it. Thinking she had forgotten that the ban was lifted, I called to her:

You don’t need the mask anymore!

but she replied

I still want it!

In the end she has the right to remain a sheep if she wants or perhaps there is a medical reason why she needs it, but it was a sad thing to see an American so trained.

Update: Went to mass today only about 5% were masked. When at the end of the Mass father announced the official end of the mask mandate there was a loud round of applause, however at the supermarket where masks were optional the clear majority was still masked.

don’t try this too long, for fear you may awake his sense of humour and proportion, in which case he will merely laugh at you and go to bed.”

C. S. Lewis The Screwtape Letters

I had planned on writing about Javier Lopez’s part in the most unique play ever in the history of baseball (that will wait till next week) or perhaps a post that came into my head a few minutes ago concerning President Trump on the audits (That deserves something really long) but I threw both out when I saw the Matt Whitlock tweet of this video from TMZ via this Don Surber Post Via Stacy McCain

Its importance can’t be overstated.

Nothing so humanizes a person like being able to laugh at yourself and here you have Justice Thomas, the greatest villain that the left has next to Donald Trump laughing at and joking with another black man who is trying to film him for whatever reason.

Don’t think for one moment that it won’t go out to the black community that has for decades been falsely sold the idea that he’s a monster although I suspect that belief is a lot strong in the white liberal community than among black Americans.

Nothing is more dangerous to the left than a person like Thomas being seen as they actually are. That’s why the Trump rallies backfired on CNN etc. Too many people saw Trump as he was, saying what he says completely unspun. It’s the reason why the tech giants and media want to silence him.

This is Justice Thomas being himself. It’s just too bad that it didn’t get out 20 years earlier.
