A difference in perspective

I was working on a computer for a lady that I’ve been helping out since my HiWired days. I mentioned my week with Robert Stacy and the City Counsel stuff and she asked about the blog.

We had only met in person once but I had a feel for her politics. She had called for help on election day but I just didn’t have the time, but I took advantage of the call to ask. If she had voted, who she had voted for etc.

Yesterday the subject came up again and I gave her the blog site and warned her what my philosophy and beliefs are and elaborated on the same. It appears we are as diametrically opposed as two people can be when it comes to politics.

It doesn’t matter of course. She is a friend and will of course remain so, I have plenty (well most) of my friends think differently than me. I don’t base friendships on politics, that’s how you Balkanize a country.

It really comes down to a matter of perspective, how one thinks of certain things, it is that different perspective that struck me in this letter to Jay Nordlinger in his Impromptus column:

In his State of the Union address, President Obama, as you may remember, proposed a particular break for graduates entering “public service.” Since then, I have written a fair amount about what constitutes public service: For me — and you too, I bet — opening a good store is a public service. So is inventing something useful. Or employing people. Etc.

Anyway, I’ve received much, much mail on this subject, and I thought I would publish just one letter:

Dear Jay:

A couple of years ago my son’s friend graduated from Rutgers Law School. He had arranged to enter the Army, as a lawyer-officer in the Judge Advocate General’s department. I pointed out to him that the State of New Jersey had a debt-forgiveness program for law-school graduates entering into public service. He inquired, and was informed that service in the United States Army did not meet New Jersey’s definition of “public service.” Public defender? Absolutely. Lawyer for the “homeless”? Of course. Army officer? No way. Being an attorney, I offered to fight it for him (for free), but he demurred.

Now I don’t know what my friends would say, perhaps they would agree with New Jersey decision, perhaps not, but it is all a matter of philosophy and perspective.

Oh and if you don’t read Jay Nordlinger regularly, you are missing out.

Update: Another example:

He’s explicitly scornful of the bloggers who refer to the students at the less highly ranked law schools as “TTT” or “third tier trash.” It’s interesting to me that he’s paying attention to the blogs (and, of course, I’m not one of the bloggers who would ever use that term). He also speaks of wanting to visit law schools in his circuit. He has a touching dedication to the southeastern United States.

By the way, this talk at UF consists entirely of responses to student questions, and the questions are excellent.

to find out who that is read the whole thing via Glenn.

…beat her breast over Andrew Young as the enabler of John Edwards and his book?

Were none of these people employed as journalists in 2008? They certainly believe that Morning Joe viewers don’t read Kausfiles.

You want to see enablers of John Edwards Tina, look in the mirror.

Update: Byron York Elaborates:

Dec 2007:

At the time, Edwards thought he had outsmarted the watchdogs of the press, frustrating their best attempts to uncover the story. But it later turned out that many journalists just didn’t want to report the news and hadn’t tried very hard to uncover the facts.

And then again July 2008, Edwards is actually caught in a Hotel:

The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the broadcast networks and the cable news outlets — none reported the story. And yet this time it bubbled up, from the blogs to talk radio to late-night television. By the second week of August, Edwards appeared on ABC News to semi-confess.

An explosive scandal had been kept out of the press for months at a time when the man at the center of it was an important player in national politics. Why? Young thought it was because the Edwards camp so tightly controlled information that journalists weren’t able to find sources to corroborate the Enquirer’s reporting. Perhaps that was part of it. But the fact was, many editors and reporters just didn’t want to tell the story. They admired Elizabeth Edwards. They saw no good in exposing John Edwards’ sordid acts.

Journalists saw no good in exposing the sordid acts of a former, senator, vice presidential and presidential candidate.

Remember Media when you ask why you aren’t trusted or respected remember that you did this to yourselves.

…particularly when the US Attorney on the case is rescuing himself from the case.

Even more interesting is the time lag in the announcement. This happened the very next day yet it wasn’t announced. Hot Air asks:

One wonders why they waited so long to announce it. The press release is still not available on the Web site of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Louisiana’s Eastern District.

Mike Barnicle’s assessment of “Bad Parenting” when describing O’Keefe on Morning Joe today might have to be revised as may my “Wheel of Fish” award. I’m no lawyer but Ann Althouse is and she asks the 64,000 question:

The charge against O’Keefe is entering federal property under false pretenses for the purpose of committing a felony. What felony does the government say they intended to commit?

This is starting to head into Bill Sparkman territory.

I wonder if Jim Letten’s recusel will make the front page of the NY Times above the fold?

An FYI to new readers…

…and there are quite a few of them these days. As a rule I post less on weekends since that’s when the wife and kids have off. So you will see scheduled posts of Amazon reviews that I do during the week. Under the old system I’m a top 1000 reviewer (730 or so), under the new system that they started recently to encourage more reviews I’m around 1300.

Since I’ve been reviewing for a while If I get behind no new things to read I will on occasion link to an old pre-blog review as well.

So feel free to check out the various things, I particularly recommend the Big Finish Dr. Who audios, but for them check out Mike’s comics to my knowledge they have the best prices on them online.
