A moment of crisis

Marine Sgt. Steve Russell was on guard duty. It was Sunday, a day of rest.

As he gazed out of the compound’s gates in Beirut, he saw a truck turn and head for the Marine outpost.

Then a wave of flames swept across the truck’s bumper, sending tons of explosives in a suicide attack.

Amazingly, Russell survived. But the explosion killed 241 military personnel—almost all of them Marines, who had come as part of a peacekeeping mission after the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. It was the largest loss of life among the Marines since Iwo Jima in World War II.

A seminal event in the chaos of the Middle East, the bombing 40 years ago still provides some insight into what led to today’s events.

As an investigative journalist for ABC’s 20/20, I spent several months back then in an attempt to piece together who was behind the attack and why.

Here are the reports:

Here’s what we found:

–Iran financed the attack on the Marines to humiliate the U.S. government and its presence in Lebanon, particularly when the Reagan administration pushed for Arab countries to make peace with Israel.

–Syria, a longtime ally of the Islamic Republic and enemy of the United States and Israel, provided the logistical support for the operation.

–Islamic Jihad, a front organization with ties to Hezbollah, provided the manpower in Lebanon. Heading the operation was Imad Mughniyeh, one of the Middle East’s prolific terrorists and bomb makers. As a chief strategist of Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia group, he deployed truck bombs and improvised explosive devices throughout the region, including the war in Iraq.

–The Reagan administration failed to recognize the danger the Marines faced in Beirut. For example, the guards protecting the compound were under strict orders to keep their guns without any rounds in the chamber to protect against civilian casualties. Moreover, the American military command failed to inform the Marines about the possibility of an imminent attack—information received a few days before the explosion.

–The Reagan administration largely ignored the attack’s impact on the Marines for two reasons. First, only days after the attack, the United States invaded Grenada to rescue American medical students. Second, a significant divide existed within the administration between those who wanted retaliation against the terrorists and those who argued that the government had no definitive proof of whether Iran and Syria were involved.

What can we learn about today’s issues from the past?

First, a clear connection has existed for decades among Iran, Syria, and the Palestinians. You don’t need a smoking gun to know that a link exists between the trio. Syria cannot play as prominent a role today because of its ongoing civil war.

Second, Hezbollah has become a powerful influence in the region, particularly as the leading party in the Lebanese government and an ally of Iran. Moreover, Hezbollah provides aid and assistance to Hamas, the main instigator of the attacks on Israel.

Third, Shia Muslims, the smaller of the two main branches of Islam, control a vast swath of the Middle East, including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. That’s a significant shift from the balance of power in the past 40 years when Sunni Muslims controlled much of the territory. That’s why Saudi Arabia leaders, who are from the dominant Sunni tribe, have started to talk with their longtime enemies from Iran.

Fourth, it’s important to note that the Sunni-Shia détente also includes the Palestinian leadership, which is primarily Sunni. Moreover, it’s important to note that the Palestinian political groups, which historically made no differentiation among Sunnis, Shia, and Christians, have created ties with distinctly religious regimes.

Lastly, the United States has a history of putting itself in harm’s way in the Middle East, wagering that a show of military strength will somehow frighten its adversaries. So, too, has shuttle diplomacy played a role in the U.S. strategy.

Let’s take a good, hard look at how many failures the United States has had in the Middle East over the past four decades. Only the first Gulf War stands as a victory.

It may be time to sit this one out.

For the last four years I’ve been reliably told by the left that anyone who insisted that or Tweeted out “All Lives Matter” was a racist, a bigot and a person who hated blacks.

Now while that’s of course nonsense since all men are created in the image of God and thus their lives matter, my opinion on this subject was ignored and the “new rules” were put in place by people of the left like the folks at Vox:

Offensive political dog whistles: you know them when you hear them. Or do you?

Or USA Today:

#AllLivesMatter hashtag is racist, critics say

Or Distractify:

Maybe You Mean Well, but This Is Why You Shouldn’t Say “All Lives Matter”

Or even the Washington Post

The racist roots of the dog whistle

In fact do a search for the phrase: “All lives matter is a racist dog whistle” and you will find pages of results of our friends on the left declaring that under their rules (not mine) the phrase “all lives matter” is a racist dog whistle and a reliable sign that the person who utters it is beyond the pale.

Well lo and behold apparently now that Israel is about to invade Gaza to destroy the babykillers of Hamas guess what phrase is acceptable again:

Why I’m shocked SHOCKED that Congresswoman Talib would DARE to suggest that “all lives matter” after all the best and the brightest of the elites have told us for almost half a decade now that any person who dares utter this phrase must be a horrible racist who should be shunned and disreguarded.

Now of course I don’t believe that myself but these aren’t my rules, these are the rules that the left in media, academia and Politics have insisted on so how can it be that Talib can say this without being denounced.

Why anyone might suspect that they don’t actually believe in these new rules that they’ve prorogated and only apply them when there is a political advantage and toss them aside as soon as any ally, like say Mass murderers who slaughter helpless women and children and behead babies allies, might be held responsible for their actions.

I look forward to reading the numerous columns in the left media denouncing Congresswoman Talib as a racist.

I’m sure they’ll be ready to print the day after Iran declares that Israel has a right to exist and defend itself from terrorist attacks.

Unexpectedly of course.

Update: Instalanche: Thanks Glenn, Welcome all take a look around check out how Hamas compares unfavorably to the actual Nazi’s and how parts of the shocked left is a great example of how Hell works.

For the past several decades college campuses have been centers of progressive indoctrination rather than centers of higher learning.  Over the past several years this has escalated to all out brainwashing.  Just how brainwashed college students are became obvious in the wake of the horrendous attack by Hamas terrorists on Israel.  Almost immediately after the cowardly attack began, demonstrations erupted on college campuses in support of the Hamas terrorists: College Students Blame Israel For Hamas Terror Attack (thefederalist.com)

Over 30 Harvard student organizations made a joint statement the day of the assault, writing that Israel is “entirely responsible” for the “unfolding violence.”

Columbia University students from the groups Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace asserted that “the weight of responsibility for the war and casualties undeniably lies with the Israeli extremist government and other Western governments.” Likewise, Students for Justice in Palestine at Northwestern University affirmed in the aftermath of the attack that they “stand unwavering in our commitment to highlighting the profound injustices faced by the Palestinian people.”

A cursory examination of statements released during these demonstrations prove how extensive this brainwashing is.

All the statements used left-wing, anti-colonial language. Harvard  students described Israel as an “apartheid regime” that forced Palestinians into “colonial retaliation.” Columbia students characterized the Israelis as “extremist … colonial-settlers.” Northwestern University students stated that it is a “grievous miscarriage of justice to portray Palestinians as the aggressors in this occupation” and that it is “morally untenable to portray Israel as the victim.”

“From Algeria to Ireland, from South Africa to Vietnam, from East Timur to Tibet, and from Native American to Black American civil rights struggles, the human desire for autonomy and dignity has historically remained powerful and unwavering,” wrote the Northwestern students. “The Palestinian narrative and efforts are woven from this same fabric of endurance and determination.”

There is nothing wrong and much right about universities encouraging discussion about the history of the Middle East, the fraught politics of the region, the rights and wrongs of Israeli and Arab policies, and dissent from US policies. Academic halls and the streets of America are supposed to be realms of free speech and vigorous disagreement. As long as the vigorous debate remains peaceful and rational it should be encouraged. It’s not like anyone is above criticism.

But that is not what we are witnessing. Instead, we see the constant celebration of brutality. The murder and rape of countless civilians. The kidnapping of innocents, and the justification of evil in the name of “anti-colonialism.” If this is what anticolonialism looks like–gang rapes and kidnappings–I guess I prefer colonialism and you should too.

Our major universities, though, have become breeding grounds for an ideology that celebrates this brutality, both here and abroad. Hatred of the West has become their “brand.” Wokism is yet another, even more ideologically radical version of Marxism that exceeds the evils promoted by Marx and Engels themselves. It aims to eradicate and not in any way build upon what has been built in the West over the centuries. Marx thought he could supplant it through revolution; today’s woke just want to completely destroy it.

There have been a lot of leftist who have doubled down on their support on Hamas even when it’s been revealed that slaughtered innocents, raped women desecrate their bodies and even beheaded babies.

This support has been loud and public and with absolutely no shame.

So let me ask Americans in general and conservative Americans in particular one of the most important question they will be asked in their lifetimes:

If these leftists are willing to cheer and/or support this kind of murder of people who are thousands of miles away from them and have no direct effect on their lives, why do you think for one moment they would not support and or even take part in doing these same things to you and your family who they already hate and blame for their current situations at home?

I can’t think of a reason they wouldn’t in the world.

My advice, buy guns, buy ammo, learn how to use it and if at all possible get to a red state where the governor will not enable or fund such people.

And if you’re in a blue state and can’t move or for whatever reason can’t be armed have an emergency escape plan.
