The first of thousands to come…

During the Doctor Who special I mentioned yesterday they showed a clip from episode 4 of this year. (Not broadcast in either England or the US yet). The episode features the return of Alex Kingston as professor River Song who keeps meeting the Doctor in different relative timelines.

In the clip she points out something called “blue stabilizer” and insists they are needed to land TARDIS. When the says the ship has landed the Doctor disagrees pointing out there was no “Woosh, Woosh”. Song replies “It’s not supposed to make that sound, you leave the breaks on.”

Now this post isn’t about the canonity of that statement (Cough: episode 1 of the Pirate Planet 4th Doctor and Romana: Cough) nor the fact that the sound is the most unifying item in the show, constant since that first episode back in 1963. it’s about something more interesting.

Update: Well Luke cancels out the hole premise of the post in comments, but he’s right.

Shortly after the show I googled the phrase “you leave the breaks on” and the word “Tardis” to see what people were saying about it. Nothing, no results at all. I ended up falling asleep on the couch waking up just before 5 a.m. the next morning, the machine was on standby so I logged back in and repeated the search and this blog entry came up:

There’s a section in the special where they talk about the TARDIS, and they inserted the cutest scene where River lands the blue box and Eleven starts wondering where a certain noise was and he made the little sounds. Then River was like, “It’s not suppose to make that noise. You leave the breaks on.” Eleven replies, “It’s a brilliant noise.”

Mind you this was the ONLY entry that came up. Nothing else. Now I don’t know this blog from Adam but I do know that within a few weeks there will be hundreds upon hundreds of web sites with that phrase in it and by the end of the year it will be thousands or more.

It’s very rare to see the very first entry on something that will become part of Science Fiction pop culture, so proprietor of the blog Timey wimey, take a bow you, are the first ever blog to use the phrase. It’s an odd and in the scheme of things unimportant distinction; but it’s all yours.

Well here comes the bleg…

I owe debts of gratitude to Stacy McCain, Barbara Espinosa for their assistance in Washington. I owe a particular debut to Andrea Shea King who helped out a total stranger on the word of someone else. Finally a tip of the Fedora to The Charming Roxeanne of Haemet who provided moral support.

Thanks also to all who have linked and all who have read or commented on the posts I’ve put up and will put up on the subject.

As regular readers know I’m about 6 weeks from the end of my unemployment. Although I had a free ride down I racked up an extra $250 of expenses consisting of The train Ticket home ($135), Memory Cards and batteries ($40) and cell phone stuff ($70).

If anyone is able and willing to help offset these expenses I would really appreciate it. Just click on the “I’ll do it myself Tucker fund“. Please specify in comments that it is to offset Washington so I don’t put it toward Ga.

I’m still offering my Have Fedora will travel services for a full week of blogging & filming etc to anyone with a story they want told. Price $1000, plus flight, hotel and rental car.

To any who can kick in from $5 to $500 I will not forget it.

And of course if anyone wants to hire a full time telecommuting staff blogger let me know.

Update: Wow! It’s one thing to get an instalanche, it’s another to get one on a tip jar request. What an amazing thing to wake up to after a day of illness. Thanks to all who stopped by. when it no longer hurts to look at the screen I’ll thank you properly.

Update 2: You guys are really something. Washington is paid for, anything extra will go to the Ga Trip. Thanks to each and every one of you.

For thousands of miles they rode. Some had not seen family for weeks.

A stop on the road

As the bus drove on you could see the wear of days on the road, in and out of hotels, and multiple performances a day without even time on occasion to clean their clothes.

Voices were sore bodies were bruised and times to relax seemed few

Keeping spirits up

and far between but they went on, pausing at rest stops and convenience stores to grab something quick to drink or eat. They knew that there was still one more event to do, but it was the last event.

A little song

They had covered the length and breath of the land to unite and inspire people with their message and they had succeeded. Tens of thousands had heard them, clapped with them, cheered them giving them the energy to draw on when it seemed

A Bit tired

that there wasn’t another speech, song or dance inside of them.

It was not without opposition. In Nevada opponents had held signs trying to misdirect traffic away from their rally. In Boston a young man had tossed eggs at the bus and the performers only to be run down by Boston Police who were ready and willing to charge him. Even then with his shirt stained they showed the compassion and restraint that their foes had

A young Egg Thrower (left) asks for mercy and recieves it.

not, allowing the young man off with a warning. He was very lucky as the police in the area told him if they had been hit he would not be so fortunate. Yet like a flock of mosquitoes stinging an elephant they at worst could annoy they could not stop the messengers nor people from coming to hear it.

2 a.m. 4-15-10 Finally in Washington

At 2 a.m. a road weary crew unloaded their buses for the final time as they pulled into a hotel in Washington. One last performance awaited them, one last crowd to entertain and inspire.

Thanks guys for all the hard work!

As they rushed in the hopes of getting that last bit of rest before the show they knew from the faces and adoration from Nevada to New York, from Michigan to Massachusetts and even from the thumbs up and handshakes at rest stops along the way they had already succeeded in spreading the word. The two thousand people who would be cheering them in just a few hours were simply the exclamation point at the end of the story confirming it!

My kid will get a kick out of this one.

I was going to interview his mother too but didn’t get a chance
