In the 1950s and 1960s, the term “Made in Japan” was a way of pointing out the poor quality of items, particularly vehicles, coming from Japan. Recovering from World War 2, Japanese manufacturing was just getting back on its feet, while America had enjoyed not being bombed or nuked into submission. But the Japanese were pretty industrious, and while American cars continued to decline in quality, particularly in gas mileage, Japanese vehicles slowly improved. All that was needed was a spark, and when the oil crisis happened in 1973, imports of the more fuel efficient Japanese cars soared. “Made in Japan” no longer implied poor quality.

“Made in China” is going through the same throes now. The picture above is the LUYANG III destroyer. If it looks uncannily like a US Destroyer, you’re not wrong, and capability-wise, its pretty close in many respects. The PLA Navy is on pace to crank out 2-3 of these every year. That alone is scary, but more importantly, the LUYANG III represents a Chinese 3 step building plan that involved failing fast, then making a big investment.

China didn’t have the most robust ship building, and its first LUYANG model, the Type 052B, was more of a test platform. They built two of these and learned a LOT about shipbuilding in the process. The Type 052B isn’t very capable in a big fight, but the point was to build something and be OK at failing a lot.

The next failed step was the Type 052C. Here China added extensive air search capabilities and used only Chinese systems. They also made these at different shipyards, exposing them to the issues created when you build ships in an enterprise. It’s not a bad ship, but again, was built to teach the Chinese how to build warships.

Enter the Type 052D, the LUYANG III. Extremely capable warship. Now that China has the right design, its cranking these out quickly. There are 13 in service and 11 in construction now. To put this in perspective, in 2019 the US Navy commissioned 2 new destroyers, and 8 total ships, one of which was an aircraft carrier.

Speaking of aircraft carriers, China is working on carrier #4 now. You’ll see the same “fail fast” pattern here as well. First carrier was a Ukrainian purchase. It sucks, but it was mostly designed to teach China how to operate with a carrier. The second carrier was China’s first Russian-knock off, the Shandong, and it taught the Chinese how to build something pretty large. The third carrier, with an estimated 85K tonnage, will likely be completely Chinese design and help iron out bugs in the design process. Talks about carrier number 4 being nuclear are already happening. I’m guessing that when China begins carrier #5, it will have a design it likes and will crank out 10 of them in a row.

In the meantime, we can’t get a US shipyard to crank out a warship on-time or on-budget, and we’re cutting the shipbuilding budget anyway. We have more experience than the Chinese Navy, but that gap is closing as the Chinese deploy around the world, including near constant deployments to the Middle East and Europe.

Give it five years, and China’s Navy will have the numbers and equipment to be better than the US Navy in nearly any combat situation. That should scare us.

Saw this at Don Surber via disclose TV concerning the finances at the Vatican under Francis:

The Vatican admits it has nearly depleted its financial reserves and pleads for more donations from the faithful.

“The Vatican published its 2021 budget in its latest effort at greater transparency. It seeks to reassure donors that money is being well spent after mismanagement.

The irony is this story comes a day after this one:

For decades thousands upon thousands of resident priests and student priests and curial priests and pilgrim priests said their Masses at the many altars of the Basilica.

That’s gone. Suppressed to force priests to concelebrate, which is absolutely APPALLING.

Think about this for a second, these people are suppressing the Holy sacrifice of the Mass at St. Peter’s in the Vatican and yet they expect the actual faithful to give them money!?

Cripes I know Francis has been very explicit on the existence of the Devil (which along with his stress on mercy are one of this few good points) but I suggest it’s not necessary for him to give him run of St. Peter’s to drive the point home.

Given this order you’d think that they’d go to the enemies of the faith for their cash just like we’ve seen happen in America with the current administration but those folks are too smart for that. Why should they pay for what this pontificate has been giving them for free? Plus you never know when the Holy Spirit might kick into gear and suddenly those millions might end up actually being used to save souls.

That’s one of the things about having a continual line of Popes since the days of St. Peter, you’re bound to get a few Lemons in there and given the run of Saints that have been in the Chair of St. Peter the law of averages was bound to kick in.

Pray for him.

And don’t leave the church over this stuff, that’s the trap for actual believers the truth of Christ and his Church is eternal, this situation isn’t.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

Was this guy a prophet or what?

In fairness I think basically you have robber barons who are manipulating people to be said busybodies, but the point is the same.

I was listening to the audio of the old Doctor Who episode The Macra Terror (2nd doctor) about a society with a fake figurehead leader whose population is brainwashed to serve the state but is actually simply supplying the needs and desires of a group of crab like monsters and if anyone says they’ve seen these monsters they are declared a criminal and control emphatically states: “There are no Macra!”

I dare any person to listen to the episode and not decide that the US is living in this state right now.

In that episode the Macra Terror there were literally cheerleaders whose job was to encourage the people to conform and obey

Speaking of the press have you seen them lately? No action of this administration from the now expanded cages that they hated when Trump inherited from Obama was right and no action by the Biden administration is wrong. And as for noting the bailouts and graft they are united…

There are no Macra!

Speaking of things the press isn’t seeing how about the stories out of Arizona where the attempt to audit ballots and machines hasn’t ended. The latest ditty after officials lost a fight to prevent audits dumpsters full of shredded ballots turned up followed by a suspicious fire at a farm of one of the supervisors board members.

The press’s reaction? Nothing to see here. There are no MACRA!

The only thing more surprising than Milo’s announcement to me is the degree of shock people have over the Biden administrations actions. Once you start stealing elections openly from people and the institutions give why would they show restraint?

But there is nothing to worry about and nothing to see here.

There are no Macra!

Ok I admit there is one more thing even more surprising than this. Yesterday at work one of my supervisors, a twenty something fellow from Guatemala, very nice guy, comes over to me to ask me to do something, I say sure and he starts walking away…singing Sweet Home Alabama with an incredibly strong central American accent.

I did a double take and he turned saying he heard the song in a movie and can’t get it out of his head since. Given it’s one of the classic songs that makes sense but there is nothing that will bring an odd comical smile to one’s face than to suddenly hear this rendition of the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic this “southern man”…very southern.
