As a reward for his Full scholarship and fees package that he got I cleaned out my oldest’s folder at That’s Entertainment today. Looking though the stuff there were several back issues of Doctor Who Magazine. The December issue has the following to say concerning the soon to be replaced 10th doctor:

At the time of going to press on October 30th bookies Paddy Power made Paterson Joseph their 3-1 favorite. With Christmas Special Star David Morrissey close behind at 5-1.

The odds list included John Simm (8-1), Russell Tovey (10-1), Anthony Head (10-1), Harry Lloyd (18-1), John Barrowman (33-1), Marc Warren (33-1), Dean Lennox (50-1), Richard E. Grant (14-1), Hugh Grant (100-1), James Nesbitt (6-1), Robert Carlyle (14-1), Jason Statham (18-1), Aidan Gillen (18-1) , Ben Whishaw (20-1), Julian Walsh (20-1), Nigel Harman (20-1), Bill Nighy (25-1), Stephen Fry (25-1) he would have been pretty good I think, Chiwetel Ejiofor (25-1), David Suchet (33-1), Paul Bettany (33-1) he’s more of a Master type to me, Joel Beckett (40-1), Christopher Villers (66-1) Ricky Gervais (80-1), Vinnie Jones (100-1), Robbie Williams (150-1).

Cripes the return of the 9th doctor Christopher Eccleston was even given 40-1 odds but nobody at all had Matt Smith on their radar.

Those guys much must have made a fortune.

Time Lord Truther?

Did a search for “Doctor Who” in google news and found some amazing things:

First he supported the 9/11 attacks:

Ynetnews: Doctor who slammed Gaza violence supported 9/11 attacks

We now know how his 8th to 9th regeneration happened:

Uk Express: DOCTOR WHO KILLED WITH INJECTION, ESCAPES JAIL

And the Superbowl day marathon on BBC America? His idea:

Selby Times: Doctor who prescribed marathons

He’s still full of self doubt:

Philadelphia Inquirer: Doctor who checks credentials faces questions over his own resume

And I know there is a lot more snogging on the show these days but he is getting positively randy

Mail Online: Doctor who had affair with depressed patient’s wife escapes being struck off

I blame it all on the Dalek conditioning.

The Sci-Fi network has a regular run of Doctor Who at 5 a.m. EST on Friday mornings. Normally I only watch it if I happen to wake, but I expected the season finale, and instead got Partners in Crime. A very good episode but not what I was waiting for. I guess I’ll have to wait for Saturday Night at BBC America.

Oh well at least there is a new page up at Rich’s Blog.

The Next Doctor; my review

I managed to get a chance to watch The Next Doctor yesterday afternoon on the BBC site (via proxy).

I was pleasantly surprised at several things, I found myself guessing wrong over and over in terms of what was happening. The doctor finds himself in the mid 1800 in London (in the years before his Victorian Exile see Tooth & Claw) when he finds himself in league with a man claiming to be a time lord called “The Doctor” who is investigating several murders battling the Cybermen.

Tennant’s 10th doctor is intrigued while Morrissey’s “Doctor” doesn’t recognize “John Smith” but appears to remember him from the day the Cybermen made him regenerate.

The 10th Doctor’s initial conclusion is a regeneration crisis. Clues and adventure follows as the Cyber plot is revealed and the doctors work to foil it.

The interplay between the two actors is very fine, the Doctor’s companion Rosita (Velile Tshabalala) is an interesting character and our primary villain Miss Hartigan (Dervla Kirwan) is rather solid as the “wronged” woman using the Cybermen to avenge herself.

After watching it and the Dr. Who Confidential (one of the WORST i’ve seen) I see only one fault and that’s a scene that needed trimming. I also thought the final resolution was a bit weak, particularly considering his “outrage” at the actions of the “Blue” Doctor at the end of Journey’s End.

The Next Doctor is well worth popping over to the BBC site to watch it during the week long window when it is available. Enjoy it now since we will have to wait months for our next Time Lord fix. Except of course for the Big Finish monthly audios.
