One of the things I discovered in my initial week with Stacy McCain back in January is that actually being there makes a huge difference because when opportunity knocks (or in this case rings)you are near the door to answer:

Getting an interview with Sarah Palin is difficult. Getting an interview with Todd is next to impossible, and I would never have gotten this far if mutual friends — including Anchorage conservative talk-radio legend Eddie Burke — hadn’t vouched for my bona fides. So most of the conversation over the next two hours is off-the-record, or at least on background. To breach that agreement would be to put myself into that category of reporters whom Sarah Palin recently described to Sean Hannity as “impotent, limp and gutless.”

Why is this possible? Because Stacy McCain took the risk and the chance to BE in Alaska, to meet conservatives there and to give them the respect they deserve and produces the reciprocity that makes this moment possible. What a spectacular reporter

Since the MSM is not smart enough to hire him as a roving reporter, I strongly endorse hitting his tip jar. Who else is going to do this for you?

If there has ever been a moment where I have been jealous of my own hat, it would be now. My hat has been to Sarah Palin’s house and I’m on a couch in Fitchburg. ARRUGH!

The big question. Is Todd Palin or Trig now a member of the Axis of Fedora?

Update: Stacy’s exclusive makes other reporters seem limp by comparison

Doing the job the main stream media is is paid for but apparently chooses not to I spent 15 minutes talking with Republican Candidate for Ca-36 Mattie Fein:

On The Torrance Daily Breeze’s decision to not cover the campaign:

“I’m Concerned, this isn’t about looking for favorable coverage, it’s about looking for fair play. There are serious issues in the district and the voters deserve the issues on the table.”

The Irony of the Daily Breeze belittling her concerns over Harmon’s purchase of a Whopper Jr Newsweek while otherwise ignoring her campaign is not lost on her.

On Jane Harman Ducking her:

Jane Harman said she understood that the seat she has held for 16 years is not an entitlement but has ducked our attempts to debate her and avoided town hall meetings within our own district. We have also sent a letter to the Torrance Daily Breeze about sponsoring such debates, we have not received a reply.

On the Issues in the District:

Jobs is the issue, people are concerned about their jobs and the job situation of their families and friends. We have also heard from Democrats who have expressed concern about Harmon’s rough relationship with the speaker and its effects on the district

On how she has been received:

We are very excited by the response we have gotten at events from the voters. Democrats, Republicans and undeclared voters are in the district are ready for change

Shades of Ma-01. A democratic district with an incumbent who has held office for nearly two decades and a dynamic candidate (Bill Gunn) shaking things up. The difference? The local papers don’t leave the coverage of the race to bloggers 3000 miles away.

Update: Photo added courtesy of Robert Stacy McCain. How bad is it when my fedora has more of a presence in a California congressional race than the local paper?

Vinnie and I went to Matthews Cafeteria last night to a Liz Carter event. The food was very good. This might sound hard to believe to Georgia readers but I’d never had a deep fried pork chop before. In the back room Liz Carter met with a couple of dozen voters taking questions and introducing a presentation on the flat fair tax.

A brief talk about the Fair Tax, the basic idea being that it would replace federal income taxes and payroll taxes. Liz endorsed the fair tax and has promised to support it.

A very fair question was asked how we would prevent it from being amended to make it just as big a monster as the current code. The answer is it’s up to us. If we don’t hold our reps accountable that is what will happen. I’m afraid I didn’t show very much journalistic detachment, but then again I’ve never pretended that I am not a conservative republican nor that I want a conservative republican to win.

Joe, Vinnie and the newest member of the Axis of Fedora

Vinnie was very impressed with Liz (who joined the Axis of Fedora) and took a bumper sticker and information. This is exactly what will be necessary after the primaries if this seat is going to flip. She also told an anecdote that was very telling.

I also met her sons, fine young boys although we are only 6 years apart in age she certainly doesn’t look old enough to have boys that age.

It is unlikely that I will get a chance to see her again before I leave, I’m really sorry I didn’t meet her husband, he must be a fine fellow who is nearly as lucky as me.

Update: the first paragraph should have said “Fair” rather than “flat” Thanks to kp for catching that. My bad.

Religion, politics, History, the founding fathers, theology, economics we are opining deeply on all subjects. And of course we have the full Kelly (Vinnie, George, and Joe) Clan joining the Axis of Fedora.

I live for this.
