At the Palm Sunday Mass Today…

…as always the Passion of Christ is read as the primary Gospel reading. Today it was from Mark. If you aren’t Catholic you might not be aware that when the passion is read on Palm Sunday and Good Friday the Gospel is divided into parts. The priest reads Christ, There is a Nariator who reads the linking text, a 2nd reader (in our case a deacon) who reads various parts and the specific parts such as crowd reaction and the taunting of Christ are read by the people.

You would think after decades of this I would have noticed it but until I remembered this post based on Diane Korzeniewski excellent post that it hit me how proper it was that the public reads all of the condemnation of Christ. If was due to fear of public opinion the Pilate did what he knew and his wife knew wasn’t right.

Is that a metaphor on what is happening at Notre Dame? That’s for other people to say.

That Bigot Betty White…

…at least that must be what Richard Cohen would conclude.

Was watching the old Match Game on the game show network this morning after sleeping late. It’s one of those old shows that are still funny as the years go by.

Well a younger Betty White was on and a question was “Sgt Preston was so alone for so long he married his blank.” when she said Husky she shouted to the booing audience: “Who else would he marry?”

Obviously the entire Match Game cast and crew and audience under the Cohen rule must have been a bunch of racist bigot, homophobes etc etc etc since the concept that he might have married another Mountie never occurred to them.

When you watch old television you can’t help but notice this kind of stuff, it’s amazing what film can do.

(Actually it’s amazing what was considered racy on those old shows too…)

Yet another example of Nordlinger being “the man”

If you read this blog you know I like Jay Nordlinger, when I got to meet and eat with him in Boston. I love his writing because he tends to say things that lay things out simply while still having that excellent use of the English language, (A tool I’ve always been iffy on).

Today he illustrates the difference between Israel and the Arab world in one paragraph and a sentence.

Every now and then, I think of the status of Arabs in Israel, contrasted with the status of non-Arabs in Arab countries. And years ago, I was arrested by a news story. I read — I am going from memory — “Prime Minister Sharon’s speech in the Knesset on Thursday was interrupted by heckling from Arab legislators.” And I tried to imagine parallel reports: “President Assad’s speech to the Syrian legislature was interrupted by heckling from Jewish legislators.” “President Mubarak’s speech to the Egyptian parliament was interrupted by heckling from Jewish legislators.” “King Abdullah’s speech to the Saudi parliament was interrupted by Jewish members.” Etc., etc.

Those men couldn’t even be interrupted by Arab and Muslim legislators!

I actually think a lot of the supporters of the Arab world are totalitarians at heart, they just think that if it was someone nice like say THEM running things the world would be a better place.

If only this was an April Fools joke…
