There is lot more to journalism than smiling in front of a camera

A few months ago I was driving home with the wife and son when I noticed a TV camera crew across the street from the Hospital.
My wife saw the look in my eye and insisted that I head home (we were less than 10 min away) I did that, grabbed my camera and a pad and ran off to see what was going on.
There had been an accident earlier in the day where a teen had hit a young kid, who was hospitalized. There was going to be a live shot so the young lady and her crew was setup in the parking lot across the street to shoot the segments for her report and some teases:
There was an awful lot of waiting around and trying to tweak presentations. It’s wasn’t a pleasant spot to be, the lights attracted the bugs but the shots needed to be made.
I talked to the crew guys, the discused going around in the truck, having to drop things on a moment’s notice to get a story and how on occasion it was awkward because once in a while you had to stick your nose in during a bad time for people.
The bottom line is these folks have more on their plate than you may be aware of.
I thought of this today when Kerry Picket of the Washington Times came by, she had come in to visit with us BLOGCON bloggers and hang out a bit. It was past midnight and most of us were relaxing.
I first met Kerry during the Brown campaign, Stacy had introduced us at the North End Brown/Guilliani event in the north end and Stacy Ran into her again at the Bill Clinton event and filed her stories on the subject from my dining room table and we of course saw each other at the victory party.
Kerry has a lot more street sense than I do having been many places and seen many things. As I’ve been grabbing everyone in sight I asked her if she would care to do one of my two minute (patient pending interviews).
It wasn’t so odd that she asked if I could catch her in the morning. I had asked several other people here for interviews and we did them at a more convenient time. No big deal, but the way that she did it struck me.
You never saw a person so regretful, she explained had been working hard, and was a bit run down and felt she wasn’t at her best, physically or mentally but she also said that she understood that she asks other people this very question every day and felt guilty for putting me off.
It was an incredible display of class and respect. I’ve asked local MSM people if they would do a short interview and was rewarded by the curt refusal, but only one other time had a reporter (one from Fox 25) decline with regret as he was running to file.
If you have read Kerry’s work or heard on Captain Ed’s show or seen her on Red Eye you know the high quality of her work, however I’m pleased that I can acquaint you dear readers of the high quality of her character.
Some general notes from the congressional liaison meeting

this took place on capital hill. The panel consisted of Dan Riehl Melissa Clouther and Stacy McCain Tabitha Hale. Each talked about interactions between congressional offices and bloggers:

Melissa made some serious points saying:
Bloggers will notice things first, they can give good hits to a local congressman on the issue. A local blogger can connect the congressmen with grass roots.
Framing is very important when the MSM is the conduit for information being released it will not be used in a manner that favors a republican/conservative
thus it is vital to have the blogger relationship so that the positive message is released otherwise the lack of coordination keeps us playing defense.
I could not agree more, why should you provide fodder to organization that not only oppose you but help sustain them?
Dan Riehl brought bluntness to a new level but spoke some common sense:
To the press: you think we are idiots, we think you’re idiots but we need to work together as we’re on the same side. We need to be on the same page and beating democrats.
You can’t ignore and neglect us, step on us and we will step on the foot.
No one person is that important but our mass and aggregate is important.
If you are a press person establish a relationship with a couple of bloggers.
If you want for example to get a video out give it to a blogger, he will post it, others will link and the MSM will get it from them, you get the attention, the blogger gets the hits, win win.
Tabitha Hale talked about facilitating bloggers (as she has for me.) The purpose of these events is to put faces with names, working and getting the dialogue started. Right now it tends to be the entire blogosphere vs Washington.
This actually sounds a lot like my have fedora will travel stuff, my example. Lets say a congressman is planning a bill to say reverse a green regulation that will allow a local factory to continue without layoffs. If he goes to the media, it becomes a story about the experiment with a republican as a foe. If he goes to a blogger like me and if his supporters can finance a trip to the district that can be a week of stories and post, all about said job, here and at the Examiner. A week worth of stories that he can reference and instead of the media creating the template we do.
Remember the NYT is being read in most districts, a blogger appearing locally can create news locally where the congressman’s voters actually are. By the time the MSM strikes, the narrative is out there.

It’s stuff like this:
An alarming, must-see video at Big Peace shows prominent leaders of the Islamic community in the United States openly raising money for terrorism at a Saudi-funded mosque in central Florida.
Organized by the Islamic Society of Central Florida’s Imam Muhammad Musri, the compelling video features leftist former UK MP George Galloway and three-time felon Mahdi Bray of the Muslim American Society’s Freedom Foundation raising at least $55,000 for Hamas.
The sad thing is, if the MSM was willing to report on this stuff when it was happening it might have been nipped in the bud and wouldn’t have emboldened these guys to continue along these lines.
Well at least groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center investigate stuff like this: Oh Wait:
With regard to monitoring radical jihadists, we have made a pragmatic decision to leave that mainly to the major Jewish NGOs, which do a good job and have some real expertise that would likely take us years to develop.
When there is no disincentive for bad behavior you get more of it.
