Remember the same type of tax in Rhode Island and North Carolina has in dollars raised…nearly one.
Nothing like taking money out of the pockets of people in your state when they are hurting for jobs.

…in ways I approve of. That would be my description of the very nice woman at the IRS office in Fitchburg that helped me with three tax questions I had concerning rules.
It’s true there is a computer program she is required to use, but she was friendly, helpful and enthusiastic about giving a hand. She puts the “serve” in public servant.
She also had some answer concerning the Have Fedora will Travel business stuff that I’m going to need to know when next year’s taxes come around.
So a hearty well done to #1. The IRS for hiring this woman, #2 The IRS for that new program she was using. it is more likely than not to give consistent answers to everyone and #3 To the woman herself for doing her job well.

…so now comes my traditional 1 week cooling off period where I walk away and leave the forms where they are. I always fill out my taxes in pencil and then wait a week and them come back to see if I’ve missed anything or gotten anything wrong.
There are a few things I need to check up on as some new forms are in play for me. Due to an UGMA that was cashed in for my oldest I need to check the rules concerning that. It makes his form more complicated than mine.
As you might guess due to the wonderful tax laws in Massachusetts I will be owing the state but getting a refund from the feds, either way there is nothing like diving through the complicated forms to make the “fair tax” look better and better.
(and yes you read that right, I do my taxes on paper, you won’t find any bit of my stuff in electronic form)
Every time I plan to finally get started on the Taxes something comes up, so today I am determined. Before the day is out My Son’s taxes will at least be finished and I will work on the initial hit on my own.
Of course this year I’m likely going to owe for the first time ever so that might have something to do with it.
Although I am a “tech guy” I absolutely refuse to do my taxes online or via a program. I much rather have paper and pencil. It’s a lot harder to copy and paste sheets of paper than a data file.
One other oddity I have at taxtime is letting them sit. Once I finish my taxes and double check them I always let them sit for a week. You’d be surprised how many thing pop into your head after the fact. Giving your brain that week of rest really makes a difference.
