On the election for the new RNC head

I didn’t have a horse in this race myself. I heard good things about Ann Wagner and people I respect supported her (big tea party favorite). Other people I respect as well supported Michael Steele (on the he was in charge when we won theory).

The problem? The RNC is having is grass-roots fundraising problem. The conservative grass-roots does not like the idea of hundreds of thousands of dollars being spent on, shall we say, less that loyal conservatives/republicans (read Dede Scozzafava, Charlie Crist). Combine this with the internet and the ability of individuals to give cash directly to candidates the actually like, and poof the RNC becomes irrelevant.

Establishment republicans who really don’t like the rise of the tea party (because they understand a true anti-spending movement decreases the perks and the power that are the rewards of office) wanted to keep their favorite out of the chair. Those big donors are looking for a return on their investment. The tax payer spigot being turned off is the last thing they want.

The winner Reince Priebus as a former Steele is likely a safe choice who can hopefully navigate the shoal between those rocks that Steele didn’t.

The thing about being a party chairman is that by definition you have to support any person with a (R) next to their name. If the leaders were really devious they could have supported Wagner and then hit her if she didn’t give moderates the time of day.

The real smart move would be to build a structure to advance republican thought. Such a move would create republicans. The National party could rather than funding candidates, steer funds to groups closer to the ground while allowing the sub groups such as the tea party to give to specific candidates perhaps using funding in an emergency manner to push a close or promising candidate over the top.

It’s a tough job but if we win, there will be plenty of kudos to go around. It all depends of if the idea is to advance a philosophy or to get a meal ticket. The choices made by the party will tell us which goal really counts.

…that root being Republicans strength and democratic fear.

Because republicans didn’t take the advice of the “no labels” crowd and fought for what they believed in and won a huge election this November past.

Additionally Democrats knowing their agenda was unpopular were afraid to try to pass parts of it before the election fearing that the results would be even worse than they were.

Add to that the fact that democrats KNEW that they had only the lame duck session to try to get their stuff passed and needed some republican help forced compromises.

None of this is possible without the tea party and the work of the American People.

Will president Obama work with republicans next year? We will see.

Why we fight

Yesterday I was exchanging tweets with Melissa Clouthier and this rather surprising story was being discussed:

CNN is teaming up with the Tea Party Express for a first-of-its-kind presidential primary debate, both organizations announced Friday. The Tea Party debate, featuring 2012 Republican presidential candidates, is scheduled for Labor Day week 2011. It will take place in Tampa, Florida – the site of the 2012 Republican National Convention.

As a person who ever so briefly rode the tea party express I was tickled pink. Although Melissa knows some of the folks as well she had this to say:

I wasn’t happy with what happened in Nevada, though. Shoulda left that race well enough alone.

Quite a few conservatives say the same about Christine O’Donnell but (via Glenn) Kevin Williamson makes an excellent point:

Say what you like about Christine O’Donnell and her incompetent nut-cluster of a campaign, she showed the Republican establishment that the Tea Party, and the fiscally discontent at large, are willing to run a kamikaze candidate against any RINO target of opportunity. And not all of the challengers are going to be O’Donnell-type buffoons. Sharron Angle was a much more serious candidate and ran a much more serious campaign. Pat Toomey chased Arlen Specter out of the Republican party and then put the smackdown on his Democratic opponent — a retired admiral, let’s remember, not some wild-eyed hippie — in the general. Pat Toomey scares the old guard. They do not want to see a dozen Pat Toomeys showing up in Republican primaries next time around. Kay Bailey Hutchison does not want some Stetson-wearing Toomey showing up in her backyard.

This is the real reason why the GOP is holding the line on spending. Those primaries that ousted the GOP rinos (you know the No labels crowd) can easily be repeated and establishment candidates who know Tea Party supporters can muster both cash and votes in primaries have no desire to find themselves as an occasional commentator on a CNN panel rather than in the halls of power.

It would be nice if they did the right thing because it is right but if they do it out of fear that’s fine too.
