The Ice storm commith power down those PC’s

That nasty Ice storm that was supposed to hit us earlier today finally has gotten here, power just flickered on and off in the house.

Depending on if it goes off again and stays off blogging may be spotty for the next 24 hours, but we’ll see.

BTW If you have a PC that you normally leave on and you are in the same boat as me it would be a good idea to power it down and/or disconnect it from a plug. Electrical issues along with heat and teenagers/relatives are the top killers of PC’s.

“But tech guy” you say “I have a surge protector and/or an uninterruptable power supply connected to my PC.” Let me put it this way. It takes a few minutes to shut down the machine and disconnect stuff. If either the surge or the backup power supply fails what would you rather do: spend a few minutes re-connecting devices or putting in a claim on the guarantee provided by the makers of those things?

Reinstall time

Well the old Dell Inspiron 1150 stopped booting and silly me I didn’t have the administration password for the recovery console.

So it is out with the OS and reinstall time.

This is always a pain in the neck but thanks to my wife’s thoughtful give of an external hard drive last year everything is backed up.

So the rest of the night will be moving files and installing drivers, but that’s what a tech guy does.

The missing printer

Well was able to fix my friend’s printer. Turns out it wasn’t a question of the printer not being set as default, it wasn’t listed period! That’s very odd.

Since the printer was connected to their router I was able to detect it on the network and re-install with very little issue. It was a great chance to test out my remote connecting stuff and it passed with flying colors.

That was very handy, the LogMeIn rescue software might be worth buying just to save me trips to houses of friends and families over and over.

Haven’t these people ever heard of a web cache?

Newsbusters and Busyblog have cross posted the story that KHQA is renouncing its Nov 5th story about the pending Obama-Blagojevich meeting later that day claiming that they have no evidence the meeting actually took place.

Unfortunately for them they had a follow up story on the 8th reporting the meeting did occur. They took it down from the web but BusyBlog cached it. This is 2008, they have heard of a web cache haven’t they?

We are way past willing suspension of disbelief here, we are at they think we either don’t give a damn or a just plain stupid or the public is so enamored by the president elect that we won’t care. You can’t get rid of embarrassing photos on the web, you think you can hide this and even Obama supports will buy it? Do they think that Obama support is an actual religion?

And if you do buy it, then I strongly suggest you shut down your e-mail to avoid anything that suggests millions of dollars for you coming from Nigeria.
