…when it comes to the ELCA decision with updates on reactions from the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and the ELS. Just keep scrolling.

Plus he posted a nice thank you note for yesterdays link too.

I haven’t been exposed to this much Lutherism since Davey and Goliath when I was a kid.

Oh one thing I’ve noticed looking at all those Lutheran sites yesterday is how well Catholic a lot of them are. Particularly the ones that keep track of the saints, but since Lutherans kept holy communion when they left that isn’t so odd.

I’m sure Martin Luther would be thrilled…

…with the decision to allow gay clergy to no longer be celibate in the Lutheran Church.

The nation’s largest Lutheran denomination took openly gay clergy more fully into its fold Friday, as leaders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America voted to lift a ban that prohibited sexually active gay and lesbian people from serving as ministers.

Under the new policy, individual ELCA congregations will be allowed to hire homosexuals as clergy as long as they are in a committed relationships. Until now, gays and lesbians had to remain celibate to serve as clergy.

Hey this was just what he was envisioning when he broke away from us Roman Catholics all those centuries ago starting the reformation and all that.

So now the Lutherans have endorsed specific biblical sin among clergy I say good luck to you guys.

Meanwhile if you are a Lutheran who actually takes Christianity seriously that old Roman Catholic Church that Martin decided wasn’t good enough before is still there.

We’d be pleased to welcome you in.

Oh and the American Papist notes another one of those coincidences that my friend Brian insists means nothing:

To be clear, it was not a “possible tornado,” it was an actual tornado. Local blogger Orate Fratres has pictures of the toppled steeple , and describes the event as one of those “things that make you go hmmm…”.

I mean, I don’t remember the Council of Trent being plagued by local meteorological disasters.

Yup just another coincidence.

Lutheran blog Not alone is not happy

When people say that they will agree to disagree, what they are saying is that they do not count these matters as important enough to press to the point that the other person is left with only two possible responses: either to abandon the belief that has been erroneously held and to come into agreement with the truth; or to reject what the other person believes and to reject the person who presses it as absolute truth.

This kind of conviction regarding what is believed is completely abandoned when people agree to disagree. Such an agreement is an agreement that the areas of disagreement really do not matter beyond being the expression of one’s personal opinion. Therefore the two parties can continue to be friends in the agreement that these matters are not of any real importance. They have agreed that there is nothing so important as to argue to the point of absolute agreement, and so they absolutely agree that nothing is to be absolutely rejected.

I, for one, do not agree.

I’ve looked at 20 or more different Lutheran blogs and this is the only one that seems to have even noticed the conference let alone the ruling.

I’ll check some more after supper.

UPDATE this post is now huge so I’ll add the More button here. (more…)

Found this on HotMES it may have a rule 5 photo but it has a golden rule story:

“My doctor told me there is nothing you will ever regret about having the baby, but he was like, ‘You may regret not having the baby.’ And I was like: That is so true. And it just hit me.

Now it’s true that she doesn’t declare that abortion shouldn’t take place but that is was wrong for her, considering what she was being told that right choice is a big thing:

“I definitely thought about it long and hard, about if I wanted to keep the baby or not, and I wasn’t thinking about adoption,” … “I do think every woman should have the right to do what they want, but I don’t think it’s talked through enough. I can’t even tell you how many people just say, ‘Oh, get an abortion.’ Like it’s not a big deal.” …

The American Papist is pleased as well.

The People article is here.

It will be interesting if this makes her fade away, of course if she wants positive media attention she can always pull an Annie Lennox and attack the Pope.

At Beliefnet Michael Ruse has a pretty good argument on Atheism and the what his fellow non-believers should and should not be doing. It’s worth a read but what jumped out at me was his addressing a particular pet peeve of mine:

I often refer to myself as a very conservative non-believer, meaning that I take seriously my non-belief and I think others should do (and often don’t). If someone goes to the Episcopal Church for social or family reasons, or because they love the music or ceremonies, I have no trouble with that. Had I married a fellow Quaker, I might still be going to Quaker meetings. But I have little time for someone who denies the central dogmas of Christianity and still claims to be a Christian, except in a social sense. No God, no Jesus as His son, no resurrection, no eternal life – no Christianity.emphasis mine

In the Catholic Church we see groups like this a lot from the pseudo women priests fringe groups to Catholics for Choice to the Tablet in England and Catholics United etc etc etc…

If you don’t want to be a Catholic fine; There are plenty of Christian Churches you can join. If you don’t believe in the divinity of Christ you aren’t a Christian and you are a liar and a phony if you call yourself one.

Don’t be lukewarm, remember Laodicea:

To the angel of the church in Laodicea, write this: ” ‘The Amen, the faithful and true witness, the source of God’s creation, says this: “I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, ‘I am rich and affluent and have no need of anything,’ and yet do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich, and white garments to put on so that your shameful nakedness may not be exposed, and buy ointment to smear on your eyes so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. ” ‘”Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (then) I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me. I will give the victor the right to sit with me on my throne, as I myself first won the victory and sit with my Father on his throne.” ‘”Whoever has ears ought to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”‘” Revelation 3:14-22

The Church’s job like our lady’s is to keep you out of the fire. If that’s what you want, Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular is the place to be.

If that’s not what you want or believe then have the courage of your convictions to not play games. If you aren’t sure then use the vast sources of information on both sides to help you. After all you have the freedom to choose whatever path you want for yourself; use it. You have the rest of your life to figure things out…

…after that you’re on your own.
