A breath of fresh air for higher education

During nearly 30 years in higher education, I saw first-hand the growing problems at colleges and universities.

When I started in the academy in 1994, my colleagues already had a decidedly leftist bent. But other trends took hold. Money flowed out of the classroom into administrative coiffeurs, mainly because the federal government insisted on the changes to fight “racism” and other leftist aims. As a result, the cost of tuition soared.

But U.S. Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ark., has developed a solid solution for many of higher education’s ills.

Here are a few salient facts that Cotton points out in his argument for the Student Loan Reform Act of 2022:

–Almost one-third of college students drop out before graduation. Nearly two in five college graduates regret their major, over 40% of recent graduates are underemployed, and more than half work in fields they didn’t study. Yet, in the past 20 years, tuition prices have risen over 180%, and total student loan debt is now nearing $2 trillion.

–College endowments have grown to over $800 billion in value—with Harvard and Yale sitting on over $70 billion of untaxed wealth. Colleges use their massive fortunes not to serve their students but to pay for bloated bureaucracies. Between 1976 and 2018, total student enrollment increased by just 78%, while the number of college administrators ballooned by 616%.

The federal government’s guarantee of virtually unlimited student loans is the primary cause of this disconnect. In return for issuing trillions of dollars worth of loans and protecting these loans from bankruptcy, the government demands almost nothing from the colleges.

Here’s how Cotton’s proposal would fix some of these issues:

–It would penalize colleges that leave students in debt from undesirable and unmarketable programs, causing graduates to default years later. The proposal would require that colleges become guarantors of up to 50% of future federal student loans and would fine colleges 25% of the value of future defaulted loans.

–It pressures colleges to reduce the cost of tuition and to stop hoarding large amounts of endowment money. Any university charging over $20,000 a year for undergraduate tuition must gradually eliminate 50% of its administrative staff to qualify for future student loans.

–The legislation also places a 20% luxury tax on undergraduate tuition above $40,000 and a 1% tax on the wealthiest private college endowments. The revenue raised from these taxes would go toward workforce education to help the majority of Americans who don’t have a college degree.

The legislation also requires universities to implement policies protecting campus diversity of thought. It would protect free speech and ban all forms of racial discrimination as a condition of participation in the federal student loan program.

As Cotton puts it: “This will lessen the grip left-wing ideologues have on college campuses and ensures their academic environments no longer impedes the intellectual growth of all students.”

If Cotton’s proposal becomes law, I might be convinced to come out of retirement!

The Sting 1973

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot more of the “We’ve running out of time to save the planet.” Stuff like this from earlier this month:

To be sustainable, we must return within our planetary boundaries, and the only way to achieve that peacefully is by acquiring the emotional and spiritual maturity to embrace voluntary equitable degrowth

this from congresswoman Talib when a bank exec refused to deny loans to fossell fuel companies:

Tlaib stated that she would not even bother asking Dimon to answer her question because he “obviously” does not “care about working class people and frontline communities like ours, that are facing huge amounts of high rates of asthma, respiratory issues, and so much more, cancer rates are so high among my communities that I represent.”

And he’s something from a climate site from Nov of 2020:

Without urgent action we’ll pass 1.5°C in around 20 years. This would have catastrophic impacts for our planet, such as more extreme weather, loss of habitats and the species living within them, which could threaten our food and water supplies. Preventing this requires much more action, and this needs to happen right now.

All of this took me back down memory lane to Jan of 2006 when Al Gore stated bluntly that we had ten years left to save the Planet. At the time the late great Rush Limbaugh noted Gores Pronouncement and decided to run with it:

Now, the last time I heard some liberal talk about “ten years” it was 1988, Ted Danson. We had ten years to save the oceans; we were all going to pay the consequences, which would result in our death. Now Al Gore says we’ve got ten years. Ten years left to save the planet from a scorching. Okay, we’re going to start counting. This is January 27th, 2006. We will begin the count, ladies and gentlemen. This is just… You have to love these people — from afar, and from a purely observational point of view.

And of course the clock eventually ran down:

I wrote about it at the time:

Ten Years ago Al Gore gave a speech saying that we have only 10 years to save the planet from Global Warming. At that time Rush Limbaugh started a countdown clock at 10 years.

This is January 27th, 2006. We will begin the count, ladies and gentlemen. This is just… You have to love these people — from afar, and from a purely observational point of view.

Today it ran out

and Unexpectedly not only are we all waking up alive but if you are waking up in either NY or Washington odds are you are still seeing the snow on the ground from this week’s record setting blizzard and global warming as an issue ranks below , well everything.

But that’s

Ten Years ago Al Gore gave a speech saying that we have only 10 years to save the planet from Global Warming.

goremageddon

But that’s OK, Al Gore has already made his millions off of it and there are still a few suckers out there to be taken who will be but the best thing to do today, is to look at the few fools who still fall for this hoax, and laugh

It’s now six and a half years later from that date, 16 years since Al Gore told us we would be out of time and nearly 35 years since Ted Danson assured us the oceans were going to be destroyed and yet the climate change , global warming crowd is still singing the same tune?

Why? Because there have been a new set of marks who have grown up in that time completely indoctrinated into this cult and as long as there is a new set of marks ready to fall for the scam, our climate change better will be able to keep themselves in champagne, private jets and fully paid for conferences with the best of food, the best of booze and all the broads they want in the name of saving the world from you.

Until they run out of marks they will continue to play the game and make their living off of it from the biggest contractor who gets hundreds of millions to the activists who gets the high five or six figure job to the pol who gets the contributions to the street activist who does the grunt work for small cash.

SHREVEPORT – Here we are, all the way at the end of September and there has been no Gulf hurricane. The weather-alarmists are in a panic.

And then.

And then, just like that there are now two named storms and areas of low pressure, tropical depression, and my social media feed is filled with spaghetti models and dire predictions of a possible Cat 4 hurricane coming to … where?  Who knows?

But weather-alarmists are happy now, and in full alert mode.

What is it that causes this fascination with storms? Nobody wants a devastating storm. Some of this frenzy goes beyond mere interest-for-preparation-purposes.  It’s very strange.

At any rate, it looks like Florida may be in the crosshairs this time with Ian, and not that I want anything to happen to Florida, but Louisiana is breathing a little sigh of relief. We all know things can change, but at least we don’t see terror right at the moment.

On a related note, you might be interest in checking out my friend Rob Gaudet’s new book: Cajun Navy Ground Force: Citizen-Led Disaster Response. Rob and I became friends back in 2012 when he was working with C.L. Bryant promoting C.L.’s documentary Runaway Slave. The story of the Cajun Navy is amazing and it is probably impossible to count how many lives they’ve saved, homes repaired, or people they’ve helped in various ways. Coordinating this effort is an exhaustive job and Rob does a great job. Get the book!

You don’t ever want to need the help of the Cajun Navy but thank goodness they exist if you do.

As much as I scoff at the weather-alarmists, in Louisiana we are within reason to worry about these storms: our coastline is vanishing at an alarming rate, and a lot of the reason is storm surge made so much worse by human factors. For decades we cut canals through the marsh for energy exploration and as a result the saltwater has encroached and contributed to erosion. It’s much more complicated than that, but the fact remains that we have a problem.

At any rate, as we move on into the hurricane season we keep our eyes to the radar, to the spaghetti models, and we pray. That’s about our best line of defense, it seems.

One of the hardest non-optional commands of Christ to his followers is this one from Luke Chapter 6:

“But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Christ elaborates as to why we must do this

For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit (is) that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful.

While I was at mass this Sunday the unjust and infamous heavily armed raid to arrest pro-life activist Mark Houck was on my mind as was the best way to respond while not forgetting that the men who did this evil deed are loved by God beyond their own understanding. As I was considering this my priest was giving a homily on how the opposite of love was indifference.

That’s where the idea of a Novena to St. Matthew for the FBI agents came from.

A Novena is a series of prayer over nine days, unusually in honor a Saint or the Blessed Mother or the Sacred Heart etc for an intention. I thought of what I tweeted concerning agents on this raid:

Those in the agency who understand the use of the FBI as an administration’s private Gestapo against their political enemies but are afraid need to be encouraged and a novena is an excellent way of doing so.

I choose St. Matthew because as a tax collector for the Roman’s he was active in the oppression of his own people until Jesus called him and everything changed as illustrated in season one of the Chosen:

What better patron for the FBI agents in this situation?

There will be a different set of prayers each day for nine days so lets begin with Day 1

St. Matthew Novena - Day 1
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us St. Matthew as an example of holiness. Help us to imitate the devotion to You he showed from the time he chose to leave his old life behind and follow You.

St. Matthew, you worked with the Roman authorities to collect taxes from the Jews. When Jesus called you to come follow Him, you immediately left behind everything in order to do so.

Please bring my petitions before Christ Whom you chose to follow!

You became one of Jesus’ closest friends and followers. You continued on the path of holy service to God throughout the rest of your life.

Pray for me, that I may always be ready and willing to follow Christ wherever He calls me. Pray that I may seek to serve God wholeheartedly each day of my life.

Please also pray for The FBI Agents involved in the Mark Houck arrest.

St. Matthew, pray for us!

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

I think a prayer warrior like Mr. Houck would appreciate and approve of this approach.
