Mandarin for Mandarins

China ratcheted things up a notch or two in Western Pacific on Friday, with the Taiwan defense ministry reporting that twenty Chinese military aircraft violated Taiwan’s air defense identification zone, including four nuclear-capable bombers and 10 fighter jets. Taiwan sent warnings and no confrontation was reported. This was the largest violation yet by China, which has made a habit of testing Taiwan’s air space.

This comes only hours after China hit the United Kingdom with sanctions in retribution for the UK daring to criticize China’s multitude of human rights depravities in the western province of Xinjiang.

Which comes as China disappears major Western retailers Nike, Adidas, Burberry and H&M in retaliation for the companies refusing to source cotton from Xinjiang, where the local Uighurs are enslaved on cotton farms.

Which comes just days after Chinese diplomats came to Alaska and mocked American strength to American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s face. Blinken took it, surprising no one.

Meanwhile, China’s military is trying to create biologically enhanced supersoldiers, experimenting with the gene-editing technology known as CRISPR.

So it seems a strange time for the U.S. military to worry about maternity outfits for pilots, weakening competencies for women soldiers, and providing “gender reassignment surgery” for military members. But then, the Biden Administration is making all kinds of strange decisions. The depressingly progressive military leadership seems so concerned about making safe spaces for wokesters they’ve forgotten their duty is to make the United States itself a safe space, and that’s done through actual physical strength and force.

It should be an interesting few years, in no small measure because China itself is facing a steep population decline, which could make its widely predicted global dominance a short-lived thing — and offer a shorter window for reclaiming Taiwan, for instance, than perhaps they previously expected. Seems the one-time one-child policy worked a little too well. Pity.

Well, we had an American Century. How bad could a Chinese Decade be?

Last of the Noemhecians

One of my favorite shows as a kid was the British 8 part mini series of James Fenimore Cooper’s classic tale The Last of the Mohicans which was shown on WGBH channel 2 as PBS’ Masterpiece Theatre series.

There were many classic moments in the eight part series but one came to mind this week when South Dakota governor Kristi Noem did an abrupt about face on a bill to protect women in women’s sports.

In episode 2 Hawkeye and the Mohegans having recused Major Heyward’s party consisting of the daughters of Col Munro, his batsman and a traveling Psalmist are hiding in a cave bedding down for the night. Heyward is venting to concerning the mistake he made in trusting Magua the Huron to a listening Hawkeye and suggests to him that his is foolish to trust the Mohegans Chingachgook and his son Uncas. This leads to this speech by Hawkeye that has always stuck with me. (emphasis mine)

Hawkeye: I’ve known Chingachgook since we were both young. I knew Uncas’ mother. I’ve known Uncas since the day he was born. Major Hayward I do not know you! If we had to fight back to back, it’s possible that you might run. Oh I don’t think you would, but you might. I’ve fought back to back with these Mohegans and they didn’t run!

Last of the Mohegans episode 2 1971

This had been the reason why I had supported Ted Cruz over Donald Trump in 2016. Both were saying all the right things but I had already seen that Ted Cruz wouldn’t run and didn’t know about Trump. Of course we figured out pretty quick that President Trump didn’t run from a fight either and I was happy to support him in 2020.

We still don’t know who the GOP nominee will be in 2024 but it’s imperative that both the nominee for President and Vice President are people who will not run when the left, or the media or the NCAA goes after them.

Kristi Noem has done us a great service just as Nikki Haley did by showing that when the chips were down and if we had to fight back to back, they would run. Noem’s handling of the COVID crisis in her state has been excellent and she deserves credit for it. Haley certainly did a fine job at the UN and she deserves credit for it too and in a different era that might be enough.

We are however now at a point where conservatives and conservatism are literally fighting for our lives and we can’t be looking for someone hoping to get JFK library awards for throwing us off the bus.

It’s just as well we learn this now before we invest time, effort and most importantly money on them.

If there is one thing we can be sure of from this press conference our enemies who are paying the bills for the guys who stole this election certainly got their money’s worth. I don’t think the US has looked this weak in decades.

If you really want to see the value of total control and or corporation of the MSM with an administration look at the media coverage on the evening news. It’s very easy to give the illusion of a confident president rathter than a dotering dementia patient when you only have to display perhaps a minute, perhaps less of a one hour press conference for your news coverage in order to con the person who doesn’t bother with news and will think of nothing else.

It’s like that project where someone made a trailer for the Shining to make it look like an upbeat family comedy.

For me the funniest thing was him claiming that he had no idea about the rules and preccdents of the Senate, which happens to be the body that he sat in from 1972 till 2008.

In fairness given his state of mind it’s highly possible that this was a true statement.

If you really want the vibe I think I’ve summed it up here

I must admit their ability to resist that pull was impressive.

Finally I can’t imagine them letting him do this again anytime soon. While I’m sure he has at least a couple of cogent hours a day it can’t help when it’s obvious that every reporter is only there to prop him up. But given the left’s ability to delude themselves maybe they can pull it off.

When screen legend Maureen O’Hara died in 2015 at the age of 95 one of Hollywood’s secrets died with her.

In the final scene of the screen classic Oscar winning movie The Quiet Man Maureen and John Wayne’s character playing Mr. & Mrs. Sean Thornton who have finally resolved a conflict that was tearing their marriage apart are waving to the camera. Mary Kate (O’Hara) whispers something into Sean’s (Wayne) ear. He does a surprise double take and with grin on her face she heads back to the cottage with him in pursuit and the end credits and music end with his arm around them back to the camera as they head into the cottage.

To get that reaction from Wayne he wanted director John Ford instructed O’Hara to whisper a specific sexually vulgar statement into his ear. O’Hara demurred at first but eventually agreed on the condition that nobody outside of her, Ford and of course Wayne would ever know what she said. Ford agreed and Wayne agreed after the fact (since he didn’t know it was coming.) and took the secret with them. O’Hara outlived them both by over 30 years and was often pressed on the subject in interviews but never gave up the secret and to this day it has never come up.

The reason why O’Hara was able to keep this secret successfully was the fact that it was held by only three people and that once Ford (died 1973) and Wayne (died 1979) the only person who could betray that secret was her.

And that brings us in a very round about way to this story at Legal Insurrection’s about the efforts of Glenn Kirschner to compel business’ to state categorically that election 2020 was free and fair

“The 2020 presidential election was free and fair, and produced accurate, reliable results,” reads the explanation behind the “Democracy Pledge” that Glenn Kirschner hopes to put before “every company in the country” in the coming months. “Those who sought to undermine or otherwise refused to acknowledge these results, share responsibility for the civil unrest after the election, culminating in violence at the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.”

The pledge includes a declaration of “valuing, affirming and supporting democracy,” and of affirming “that the election of Joseph R. Biden and Kamala Harris was free, fair and legitimate.”

Kirschner understands that the Biden administration and those who stole election 2020 do not have the same advantages that O’Hara did in keeping a secret. As I noted back in November:

The Democrat bosses in Nevada, in Michigan, in Wisconsin and in Pennsylvania each knew that they were capable of stealing their own state but each of them also knew that their own state would not be enough. What’s the point of stealing Nevada and or Wisconsin with it’s 10 electoral votes or even Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes if it just meant narrowing the margin of the Trump victory, especially if such a victory was followed by a federal investigation that could put them away for a very long time?

No each of them had to have blood on their hands so to speak. Each of them had to be sure that the other bosses necks would be on the line. Each of the had to be sure that they would be all in on the steal (and I suspect each of them had to be sure that the media and the tech giants would back them up, I would not be surprised if there was coordination with those folks during the pause in the count.) and I suspect only when they agreed to hang together rather than risk hanging repeatedly did the counts resume.

And the logistics of this steal from the marking of ballots to their delivery and to their importation to the counting area in each place (not even considering any attempt to manipulate electronic or machine counts) would have been a herculean task to get done in six or seven hours. The normal cautions would have been thrown to the wind, meaning that you literally have hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands of people involved in the actions, the cover up and of course the authorization of all of these things.

I submit and suggest that given the sheer number of people involved the question it’s not a question of “If” the fact that the election was stolen will eventually leak out along with details and names. It’s a matter of “when” (That’s incidentally why I would not want to be the insurance company that issued policies on the lives of those lower level grunts who did the heavy lifting). Thus it becomes imperative to force as many people into the false narrative as possible so that when the facts do come up more people have a stake in ignoring, dismissing or outright denying them.

Maureen O’Hara knew that the only person who could betray her secret was herself. Kirschner and those who are openly (and quietly) backing him know that they don’t have the advantage O’Hara did. All they can do is continue is to do their best to manipulate the terrain so that when the facts eventually leak out as many people as possible will have pledged to look the other way. After all if they thought the election was fairly won they would not have to seek out people to affirm something that was self evident.

I imagine that Lenin and Stalin would be proud but not as pleased as Xi who is certainly getting value for his investment.
