This was supposed to be the 3rd straight 10 hour day at work but alas things were quiet enough that I ended up going home at 1 pm, which costs me overtime and bodes ill for hour for the rest of the year.
I was able to get home in time to watch the New England Patriots. As of this moment the Colts are up and while as of this writing the game is up in the air thanks to 4 holding penalties a missed kick and an almost impossible interception there is no question that the Patriots will finish with one of the worst if not THE worst record in the NFL.
Those are the bits of bad news.
The good is that this is the last year of the Biden administration and I suspect next year the economy will be rolling at such a pace that I won’t have a lot of time for Sunday football or anything else once Thanksgiving rolls around.
Furthermore while this will be a bad year for the Patriots there is absolutely no question that Drake Maye is the real thing and once they give him some tools on offense and a better offensive line (and with a high draft pick and no need to get a QB next season it’s very possible they can fill both needs via trade in one season) the Patriots will be producing quality football perhaps all the way to my retirement and beyond.
With the good young talent on the Redsox and a Celtics Championship team that has dynasty written all over it I suspect I might be watching championship level talent year round for the rest of my life.
Here are the rules for the 3rd season (1998) of the 1996 short season draft league.
How the league is to be played
We will be playing the 1998 season We will be playing under 1998 rules with two exceptions. There will be at least one interleague play to allow each player to play each other player at least one home and away series. There will be no wild cards.
The schedule
We will be playing an 80 game schedule with two series against each opponent.
2 Two game series vs interleague opponents
2 Three game series vs teams in the same league but different divisions
2 Four game series vs division rivals
the final three series of the season will all be within the division to make the races interesting
Frequency of games
There will be one series per week. This will make it easier to get in series vs division rivals and to prevent conflicts with my other leagues.
Number of teams
We have a fixed number of teams 16.
Division setup:
2 leagues, 2 divisions in each no wild cards.
Trades and waivers.
After the fifth series of the season teams may trade. Any player on the current roster may be traded along with any of the first seven draft picks for the next season If a trade is made that increases a roster beyond the 40 man limit a player must be released before the next series is played. Any trades agreed will not be executed until all the teams involved have the same amount of games played.
Waivers takes place after the sixth series. Teams make waivers picked based on their current record and are made from the undrafted players not on rosters.. If a pick brings a Roster over 40 a player must be released or an injured player not on the DL must be placed there to make room.
Note:Any player who is planning to leave the league at the end of the season is encouraged NOT to trade as it is unfair to both the other teams and the player who will replace him or her.
NEW DRAFT TRADE WINDOWS
Pre-Draft Trade window:
There will be a 48 hour window before the formal draft where trading will be allowed.
Any player on the roster (rookie or retained player) may be dealt along with drift picks up to the 7th round at this time.
Only draft picks for the upcoming draft will be tradable.
The trade window will end 15 minutes before the start of the formal draft to allow for any updates to lists to be recorded before the start.
Draft Day Trading up or down window.
At the end of each round there will be a 10 minute window for rosters to be adjusted and all the paperwork to be done.
For the first five rounds of the draft During those 10 minutes teams will be allowed to Trade. NO PICKS BEYOND THE 7th ROUND ARE TRADABLE
In Season Trades and waivers (Note change in when waivers starts).
After the fifth series of the season teams may trade. Any player on the current roster may be traded along with any of the first seven draft picks for the next season (1999) If a trade is made that increases a roster beyond the 40 man limit a player must be released before the next series is played. Any trades agreed will not be executed until all the teams involved have the same amount of games played.
Waivers takes place after the 2nd series. Teams make waivers picked based on their current record and are made from the undrafted players not on rosters.. If a pick brings a Roster over 40 a player must be released or an injured player not on the DL must be placed there to make room.
NEW Contested, Uncontested and Emergency Waivers
NEW: Contested Waivers
Contested waivers are waivers picks made after week 5 and works like this:
A team submits a waivers pick from Friday to Monday
Another team may usurp that pick and make it theirs if
It has a worse record than the 1st team
It has not already made waivers pick
It has not already tried to usurp a different pick
No team worse than them has tried to usurp it
They make the attempt 9 PM EST Tuesday
If no team makes a counter claim on the pick by 10 PM EST Tuesday the waivers pick is successful.
If a team successfully usurps the tip go to step 1 as if the usurping team make the pick
New UNCONTESTED WAIVERS
Uncontested waivers picks are waivers picks that take place from weeks 2-5.
The picks are automatically successful and are decided on a first come first served basis. If you unknowingly submit a pick for a player who has already been claimed you may pick again.
Regardless of success the player won’t be added to your roster till your Friday games for that week are completed.
NEW EMERGENCY WAIVERS
On rare occasions due to multiple injuries, suspensions or very long extra inning games or any combination thereof a team may not have a pitcher available to start or a player to play a position for their next series. In such a situation a team may contact the commissioner for Emergency Waivers.
If granted said team may make an uncontested waivers pick to either get the needed starting pitching or position player to fill the spot.
Said pick MUST be made at the end of a series or before the next as the Dynasty system doesn’t allow changes to the 40 man roster while a series is active.
If an emergency pick puts the team over 40 players a player must be released to get the roster back to 40.
If an emergency pick needs to be made for a computer team the commissioner will make the pick. Priority will be given to any qualifying player whose card is from the team needing the pick.
NOTE if a player drops out of the league and we have an empty team any draft picks he has traded those trades are still valid and will be picked by the team that received it.
The DL:
The DL WILL count toward your roster but to make up for it we will have a maximum 40 man roster. We will still only draft 30 but players may expand their rosters to 40 via trade and waivers.
Playing Games.
All games must be completed before the next scheduled series. the Dynasty system will take over and auto play any games that are not completed one hour before the next scheduled game (even if said unfinished game is in progress) Players are encouraged to use the chat room and the Dynasty message system to reschedule games if needed and are also encouraged to make a manager profile in case a game has to autoplay. Instructions on how to do that are here.
Be aware that if you have your team on AUTO and your opponent requests a rescheduled in the system Dynasty will automatically allow it so keep this in mind when or if you turn auto on. Also be aware if both team are on auto and you reschedule the game will be played automatically so make sure your team is not on auto before you do this. I also suggest when you go on auto if you plan on playing your next series make certain you checked off the “take off auto before the next series” button.
Expansion
This league will NOT have expansion. It is designed as a short season to contrast with the 1969 league and to give me an easy schedule to make. If you want a longer season and / or a bigger league check out my 1969 league currently playing 1973.
Selecting a franchise:
Players picked from existing franchises keeping two batters and two pitchers the rest go in the draft
Franchise locations and parks
Every team is presumed to have the park their team played in during the season they entered the league.
Franchises whose teams move in real life are not required to relocate their teams. So the Montreal Expos are not required to move to Washington but they retain the option to do so at the start of any season but such a move must be announced by draft day.
Franchises are NOT required to build new stadiums and my continue to play in their old stadiums if they wish. So Houston can stay in the Astrodome if they wish but they retain the right to move into Minute Maid park at any time If a team chooses to move into their new park in the same city the old park is considered demolished and no other team may use it from that point on.
A team may NOT move into a park that in a different city because the Dynasty system bases the weather on the park used NOT the city that a team’s label claims it is in. Example from the 1971 league: If the Seattle Pilots want to play in Country Stadium they MUST move to Milwaukee
A team may NOT move into a park in the same city that belongs to a future franchise. Example from 1971 league: If the Seattle Pilots choose to remain in Seattle rather than move to Milwaukee they may NOT move into the Kingdome because it is reserved for the Mariners franchise when it becomes available.
Old parks
A team MAY move into an old park from the same city under the following conditions:
The park was once the home park of the franchise OR
The franchise that once owned the park is now located in another city
You or the previous owner of the team in this league did NOT move the team out of the park.
Examples,
the Seattle Pilots move to Milwaukee the Mariners if taken MAY move into Sick Stadium.
The Cardinals may move into sportsman park because it was once their old stadium.
Both the Yankees and the Mets may move into the Polo Grounds because the park is in NY and both teams were once based there.
Franchise Moves and or Replacement players or teams
A player may decide to take a different franchise after playing one season under the following rules
The player who movies will get the city and park of the new franchise at once but will NOT get the rookies for said new Franchise until the season AFTER the move
Example: Boston decides to move to California after the 2010 season. he does NOT get the rights to Mike Trout but retains the rights to any RedSox player who has their first card in 2011. If Boston makes the move to California in 2009 then after keeping the Boston rookies for 2010 in 2011 Mike Trout is his as a rookie (see rookies below)
If due to circumstances in the real world a player has to temporarily drop out of the league their team will be put on auto until a substitute can be found. Said substitute shall take over the team and play games until the original player can return but may not make trades or drop players from the roster (excepting for injury).
If at the end of the season the base player can’t return the substitute has first rights to the team and gets full control over it.
If a player has to drop out permanently the team will go on auto until a substitute or replacement player can be found. Said player will get full rights to the franchise unless they declare that they will only be a substitute till the end of the season.
If no replacement player is found during the season a new player will be recruited for the next season. Said player will retain the franchise and draft picks of the player he is replacing. If said new player wishes to move the franchise he can per the limitations listed above, namely he retains the rookies of the current franchise for his first season and then get the rookie rights to the new franchise the following year.
Example The Yankees drop out of the league due to illness. A substitute is found to play their games. The sub places the games until the Yankees recover. If they do not recover sufficiently to return to the league the substitute may over the Yankees franchise permanently
Example 2: A replacement player is found for the Yankees in the above example but is a big Texas fan. Said substitute can move their franchise to Texas but will retain the Yankees rookies for the 1999 season. Starting in 2000 they will have rights to Texas rookies.
Rookies
A “Rookie” is define as any player who did not have a card for the previous season.
A rookie is considered to be part of the team listed on their card regardless of who they actually played their first game for (Dynasty lists cards based on who a player finishes a season with thus any rookie that was traded by an MLB team in his first season will have their card listed for the team they were traded to NOT the team they played their first game with.
All teams retain rights to their rookies prior to the draft and rookies for a franchise are not eligible to be drafted in any expansion draft.
A Rookie becomes a part of a team after said team names their protected players for the draft. They count toward the 40 man roster
Any team that doesn’t want to retain a rookie may release them before the draft to open up a roster spot but once release all rights to said player are surrendered.
Players retained list
At the end of a season teams may retain a number of players based on their finish in the previous one The players retained list for 1997 is
World series winner 4 players ( NY Mets Formally Yankees )
World series runner up 5 players (Yankees Formally Atlanta)
Division winners that don’t go to the series 6 players (St. Louis, Seattle)
Teams with the 5th and 6th best records that didn’t win a division 7 players (White Sox, Cincinnati)
Teams with the 7th and 8th best records 8 players (Cleveland, Baltimore)
Teams with the 9th and 10th best records 9 players(Minnesota, LA)
Teams with the 11th and 12th best records 10 players (Pittsburgh, San Diego )
Teams with the 3rd and 4th worst records 11 players (Houston, Boston)
Teams with the worst and 2nd worst record 12 players (Toronto, Florida)
Rookies do not count toward the keeper list total.
As soon as all the keeper/rookies are finalized the draft day will be set. A minimum of one week wait will be given to make sure people can check out the cards the 1998 cards are here:
NOTE: 1 For teams with identical records we go to the tiebreakers
Head to head record the team with the worst head to head record is considered to have the worst record.
How many games behind the players were in their division. A team closer to a playoff spot his considered to have the better record.
The best record in their division.
The best record in the league
Dice Roll, high roll is considered the team with the better record.
NOTE:If a player on your current Roster does not have a card for the next season due to injury, military service etc but WILL the following year a team may choose to retain the rights to said player but will have to spend a protected spot for it and will have to keep a space for him all season.
Example: Rheal Cormier was out the entire 1998 Season. If a team has him after the 1997 season and wants to keep him they can choose to hold his rights when his season ends and keep a roster spot for him. He will play 1998 with 39 players and in 1999 will hold the rights to Cormier.. If at any time he chooses to release him Cormier will be considered a rookie for Boston because
He had no card the previous year
No team held his rights
His 1999 card says “Boston”
The draft order of teams for each season will be based on their finish the previous season. Any team that is not retained will of course not be drafting BUT If a team holds the draft pick of a team that is no longer in the league he will draft those picks as if that team was still in the league in the round that he holds them.
Worst team (12) Toronto Bluejays
2nd worst team (12) Florida Marlins (cubs)
3rd wort team (11) Houston Astros
4th worst team (11) Boston Red Sox
5th worst team (10) Pittsburgh Pirates (Fewer GB than Bos)
6th worst team (10) San Diego Padres
7th worst team (9) Los Angeles Dodgers
8th worst team (9) Minnesota Twins
8th BEST team (8) Baltimore Orioles
7th Best team (8) Cleveland Indians
Team with the 2nd Best record that didn’t win a division (7) Chicago White Sox
Team with the best record that didn’t win a division (7) Cincinnati
Division winner not in WS with worst record (6) Seattle
Division winner not in WS with best record (6) St Louis
World series loser (5) (Yankees formally Braves)
Word series winner (4) (Mets Formally Yankees)
NOTES
Tiebreakers are the same for the keeper order
The pick order of traded picks remain the same even if a team is replaced.
Examples: If San Diego traded the NYY their 3rd round draft pick last season but are not an active team in 1998 then during round 3 the Yankees would get a pick in the sport where SD would have been had they played..
When all teams have drafted that will be considered the end of a round and the next round will commence.
NEW:
Teams WILL continue to draft in this order until:
A team reaches 30 men OR
A team with 25 or more players on their roster voluntarily drops out
Once a team has dropped out of the draft they may not re-enter it. Teams can increase their rosters to up to 40 men either through trades or waivers.
The Formal & InformalDraft.
Formal Draft & Designated Draft day(s):
A date and time will be set for the initial rounds of the draft. It will almost certainly be a Saturday or Sunday as those are the days I have off. Because my schedule is full from Thanksgiving to Christmas this may be delayed. If/When a designated draft day is set All teams will be expected to be either:
Available in the slack chat room (preferred)
Available by phone
With me in my home at the time of the draft
Have a list of players to be drafted submitted
All currently players are presumed to have looked over the card(s) for 1997 online or at least looked up stats by draft day. All teams are encouraged to start doing so at once.
There will be one designated draft day per week.
On a designated draft day a strict 5 minute limit will be allowed to make a pick.
If a team misses their pick will be moved to after the next player on the list who will be considered on the clock and allowed to pick. Example: Cincinnati misses their pick and Houston is next, Houston is allowed to pick and Cincinnati picks after them
If a team who has been skipped has to be skipped twice their pick can be made any time before the end of the round. Example Cincinnati is scheduled to pick 11th They miss their pick If they figure out who they want they can make a pick or submit a list any time before the end of the round and that pick will be valid.
If a team that has been skipped has not picked by the end of the round then a pick will be made for them by me. Said pick will be the player from your franchise who played the most games that season based on their card. Example: Boston does not pick or submit a list for round 5 I will look at the Roster for the actual 1997 red sox to see who is available. If John Valentin has the most game played among unpicked players he will be Boston draft pick. If Boston already has 2 shortstops that will not matter Valentin becomes the pick.
As soon as a round ends there will be a ten minute period to update the rosters and lists and confirm players were put on the right team. During that period draft day trades may be made (see above)
The opening Scheduled draft days will go on for 100 picks. Other scheduled draft days will be 60 picks. Once the number of picks is reached the clock is turned off
The Formal Draft generally begins at either 11 am or 1 pm EST to give west coast folk the time to be awake. Be aware that if you are scheduled to pick
BE AWARE THAT EVEN WITH A FIVE MINUTE LIMIT THAT CAN MEAN 80 MINUTES FOR 16 TEAMS TO PICK IN ONE ROUND. PLEASE DO YOUR BEST TO PREPARE FOR THE DRAFT TO CUT DOWN ON THE TIME REQUIRED. The more prepared everyone is the faster things will go.
Picks off the clock and on non-draft days
As soon as the initial draft ends the “informal draft” begins
During the informal draft a team has 24 hours to make a pick. Picks can be submitted in the draft room or via the Dynasty message system or in person if the person picking is local or via the phone to me. If there is an existing list from the formal draft it will be used to continue the informal draft.
Once the pick is made and recorded on the draft sheet and the player moved to the roster I will announce the pick in the slack chat room and inform the person up, the person on deck and the person in the hole to be prepared to pick. Until you see that announcement the pick is not official.
The Informal draft ends when:
Round 25 is complete OR
The next formal draft begins
The informal draft resumes after any formal draft that doesn’t reach round 25.
Be aware that trading can be made at any time during the informal draft until:
round seven is complete
15 minutes before a formal draft that has not completed round 7
IMPORTANT: Once round seven of the draft is complete trading is finished until the end of week 5 of the season.
The season will begin one week after the draft is complete.
Game Play Etiquette:
Given the weekly nature of the game it should be not difficult to get games in on time or at least get series started but here are some basic guidelines.
If you know in advance you can’t play on the scheduled game day and time try to contact your opponent to arrange a different time both through the chat room and the dynasty system.
If gameday comes and your team is on AUTO your scheduled opponent should assume they can play all or part of their series if they choose.
If gameday comes and you haven’t heard from your opponent check your “Friends” list to see when the last time they signed on was. If it is 10 days or more then play the series vs the PC
If gameday comes and you haven’t heard from your opponent give him or her at least two five minute waiting periods before letting the computer take over the team
On occasions when you and your opponent are in touch but just can’t seem to find a time when both are available I make the following suggestion.
The player who shows up on gameday should play one game (2 game series) or two games (3-4 game series) against the pc.
When those games are finished exit the system and put yourself on Auto being sure to check the “Take my team off auto after this series”
Then your opponent can finish the series as his or her time permits
Keep in mind that the Dynasty system is designed to keep games moving the default position should always be to get games played when possible.
If you have any questions not covered here please let me know.
If you are interested in joining this league or going on a waiting list to join leave a comment on this post or contact me via the Dynasty system.
We will be playing the 1973 season which was released by Dynasty mid season during our last season. We will be playing under 1973 rules with three exceptions:
There will be at least one interleague home and away series played to allow each player to play each other player at least once.
The DH rule was introduced into the AL in 73 but not the NL. Therefore all games played in AL parks will be played with a DH. No games played in an NL park will have a DH.
The playoff structure will include wild cards (3 per league)
The schedule
If we remain at 20 teams the schedule will remain as it was before as the system automatically migrates the old schedule. This will save a lot of work My goal will be to have the schedule ready before the draft.
Number of games:
We will be playing 162 games Two series (one home and one away 6 games ) against teams in the opposite league and Four series against in league teams. Because of the number of teams there will be a slight imbalance
Six same league teams (Four 3 game series 12 games) Three same league teams (Two 3 game series, Two 2 game series 10 games)
All those team determinations will be random.
Frequency of games
There will be two scheduled series per week. Most series will be 3 games there will be 6 two game series during the season.
Number of teams
We currently have 20 teams.
Division setup:
Barring expansion with 20 teams we will have two five team divisions in each league. There will be three wild card teams. Both division winners and the wild card team with the best record will get a first round bye in the playoffs.
PREDRAFT AND DRAFT DAY TRADE WINDOWS!
NO PICKS BEYOND THE 7th ROUND ARE TRADABLE. At the start of the 6th round Trading is closed in the league till after the 5th series of the regular season.
In Season Trades and waivers (Note change in when waivers starts).
After the fifth series of the season teams may trade. Any player on the current roster may be traded along with any of the first seven draft picks for the next season (1974) If a trade is made that increases a roster beyond the 40 man limit a player must be released before the next series is played.
A team submits a waivers pick from Friday to Sunday
Another team may usurp that pick and make it theirs if
It has a worse record than the 1st team
It has not already made waivers pick
It has not already tried to usurp a different pick
No team worse than them has tried to usurp it
They make the attempt 9 PM EST Monday
If no team makes a counter claim on the pick by 10 PM EST Monday the waivers pick is successful.
Example: If the Cubs traded the NYY their 3rd round draft pick last season but were not an active team this year then during round 3 the Yankees would get the 2nd pick of the round as if they were.
The DL:
In a change from previous seasons players on the DL WILL count toward your roster but to make up for it we will have a maximum 40 man roster. We will still only draft to 30 players but players may expand their rosters via trade and waivers.
Etiquette for no/call no show
This is a game and real life trumps it so there will be times when people miss their game days. Here is some suggested game day Etiquette:
If you know in advance you can’t play on the scheduled game day and time try to contact your opponent to arrange a different time both through the chat room and the dynasty system.
If gameday comes and your team is on AUTO your scheduled opponent should assume they can play all or part of their series if they choose.
If gameday comes and you haven’t heard from your opponent check your “Friends” list to see when the last time they signed on was. If it is 10 days or more then play the series vs the PC
Give two five minute waits: Wait 5 min for opponent to show periods before starting the game//If your opponent hasn’t shown up by then begin game 1.
Once game 1 is done. You have 2 choices. Either if followed is officially considered valid:
Give one 5 minutes period for your opponent to show if he doesn’t, Autoplay
Exit and let the system auto schedule for 24 hours from now. Then go to step 1
If you have to leave in the middle of a game or series your opponent has the right to continue to play. They may choose to agree to reschedule but experience tells me it’s bet to get the games done.
Be aware if you’re running late you can join a game in progress and take over
If you do show up and take over please let your opponent know via chat.
If you know you’re going to be gone let your opponent know.
Expansion and Expansion draft
If there is a sudden interest in the league we may have an expansion draft under the following rules:
Selecting a franchise:
New players who do not take an existing franchise will be allowed to select any of the four currently open franchises they are:
AL
Chicago White sox
Detroit Tigers
NL
San Diego Padres
Houston Astros
They will automatically gain the rights to any rookies for the 1973 team of that franchise.
If we again have multiple expansion teams they will pick franchises in the order that they confirmed their intent to join the league.
If a current player expresses an intent to leave the league before the expansion draft the expansion players will in the order above be given the option of taking over that existing franchise including their roster and current draft picks (or lack thereof)
Expansion Draft:
If an expansion draft is announced each team will have two weeks to submit a list of protected players currently on their 40 man rosters. These players will not be eligible to be drafted in the expansion draft. There will be a maximum of 7 players on each teams protected list. it is recommended (but not required) to submit an additional twelve players to be protected once a player or two is drafted from their team.
Whenever a player is chosen off a team in the expansion draft said team will be able to immediately protect an additional five players. No team can lose more than three payers to the expansion draft. If a list is not submitted before the draft and not submitted at the time the first player is taken from the team then said team will not have additional players protected until such a list is provided. I will allow a reasonable amount of time in case the player is not in the chat room for me to try to contact said player before another player is takin from his team.
Expansion teams must draft a minimum of four players and may pick up to a maximum of 12 players to their rosters before the regular draft. The number of players picked in the expansion draft by an expansion team will determine where they will draft in the regular draft.
As soon as all expansion teams have completed their drafts two things happen
All teams must submit the list of players retained in the regular draft. The players drafted by the expansion teams are considered to be that list.
All Rookies become property of their franchises and count toward their current rosters. but NOT toward their number of protected players.
Franchise locations and parks
Every team is presumed to have the park their team played in during the season they entered the league.
Franchises whose teams move in real life are not required to relocate their teams. So the Washington Senators are not required to move to Texas but they retain the option to do so at any time.
Franchises are NOT required to build new stadiums and may continue to play in their old stadiums if they wish but they retain the right to move into those new stadiums at any time so another team may NOT select that stadium. If a team chooses to move into their new park in the same city the old park is considered demolished UNLESS said park was still active in the year we are playing. It is considered by be undergoing renovation.
A team may NOT move into a park that in a different city because the Dynasty system bases the weather on the park used NOT the city that a team’s label claims it is in. Thus if the Seattle Pilots HAD to move to Milwaukee to play in Country Stadium.
A team may NOT move into a park in the same city that belongs to a future franchise. Example. If the Washington choose to remain in DC rather than move to Texas they may NOT move into the Nationals park. It is considered reserved for that franchise when it becomes available although I suspect none of us will live long enough to reach that point.
Old parks
A team MAY move into an old park from the same city under the following conditions:
The park was once the home park of the franchise OR
The franchise that once owned the park is now located in another city
Examples,
In 1971 the Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee the Mariners if taken MAY move into Sick Stadium.
The Cardinals may move into Sportsman’s park because it was once their old stadium.
The Yankees were able to move into the Polo Grounds for 1972 because that park was in NY and the team was once based there. If at some future date they choose to move back to Yankee Stadium the Mets will be able if they choose to move to the Polo grounds because it was once their home park. If both teams move there and eventually move out then the park is considered demolished.
All teams may retain a number of players based on their finish in the 1972 season.
Wild Card Teams Winners that don’t make the series 7 players (Pirates, Redsox, Twins)
Wild Card game losers 8 players (Angels, Reds)
Non division winning teams with the 5th and 6th best records 9 players (Cardinals, Indians)
Non division winning teams with the 7th and 8th best record 10 players (San Francisco (formally A’s), Expos)
Teams with the 3rd-6th worst records 11 players (Senators, Royals, Orioles, Phillies)
Teams with the worst and 2nd worst record 12 players (Dodgers, Cubs)
NOTE:If a player on your current Roster does not have a card for the next season due to injury, military service etc but WILL the following year a team may choose to retain the rights to said player but will have to spend a protected spot for it and will have to keep a space for him all season.
Example: Rico Carty was out for all of 1971 due to injury. Boston could have decided to hold his rights playing 1971 with 39 players and thus hold the 1972 rights to Carty. If he had done so and then at any time he chooses to release him Carty would have been considered a rookie for Atlanta Rookie because
He had no card the previous year
No team held his rights
His 1972 card says “Atlanta”
Boston choose not to retain so Carty was considered released. Carty’s 1972 card was with the Braves thus they did not have to put him on the retained list as he was considered a rookie for the team.
The draft order of teams has been posted here and will be repeated below taking into account the possibility of expansion teams. Any team that is not retained will of course not be drafting BUT If a team holds the draft pick of a team that is no longer in the league he will draft those picks as if that team was still in the league in the round that he holds them. Naturally if there is expansion this wouldn’t apply.
Worst team (12) Los Angeles Dodgers (Bad News Bears)
2nd worst team (12) Chicago Cubs
3rd worst team (12) Baltimore Orioles1(if an expansion team picks only 4 they draft ahead of the Orioles)
4th worst team (11) Kansas City Royals
5th worst team (11) Washington Senators (if an expansion team picks only 5 they draft ahead of the Senators)
6th worst team (11) Philadelphia Phillies
7th worst team (10) SF Giants (formally Oakland A’s) (An expansion team that picks only 6 drafts ahead of the Giants)
8th worst team (10) Montreal Expos
9th worst team (9) Cleveland Indians (An expansion team that picks only 7 picks ahead of the the Tribe)
Best non playoff team (9) St Louis Cardinals
Wild Card game loser with worst record (8) California Angels (An expansion team that picks only 8 picks ahead of the Halos)
Wild Card game loser with best record (8) Cincinnati Reds
Divisional round loser with the worst record (7) Minnesota Twins (An expansion team that picks only 9 picks ahead of the Halos)
Divisional Round loser with the 2nd worst record (7) Boston Red Sox
Divisional Round loser with the 2nd best record (7) Pittsburgh Pirates (An Expansion Team that picks only 10 picks Ahead of the Bucs)
Divisional Round Loser with best record (7) Atlanta Braves (Bananas)
Worst Team that made it to the Pennant Series (6) Milwaukee Brewers
Best team that made it to the Pennant Series (6) Oakland A’s (formally San Francisco Giants)
World series loser (5) Mets (Daytraders) (An expansion team that picks only 11 picks ahead of them)
Word series winner (4) Yankees Expansion Team(s) if any that draft 12 players pick after them
NOTES:
The Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles has identical 62-100 records but the Royals went 7-5 vs Baltimore therefore the Orioles are considered worse and pick ahead of them. If their head to head records had been identical then Kansas City would have picked 3rd as they picked 19th in last years draft so had a worse start.
The first tiebreaker for non-playoff teams with identical records is head to head matchups The 2nd tiebreaker if teams had identical records AND split their season series is draft order for the previous season,
If two or more expansion teams draft the same number of players their draft position will be determined by a dice roll
When all teams have drafted that will be considered the end of a round and the next round will commence.
NEW DRAFT ENDS AT 30 PLAYERS
Teams must continue to draft in this order until their team reaches 25 men a team with 25 or more players may leave the draft at any time.
Once a team has dropped out of the draft they may not re-enter it and must increase their roster either through trades or waivers.
Teams who do not drop will will draft till they reach 30 men.
Formal & Informal Draft
Draft on designated Draft day(s):
A date and time will be set for the initial rounds of the draft. It will almost certainly be a Saturday or SUNDAY as those are the days I currently have off. All teams will be expected to be either:
Available in the slack chat room (preferred)
Available by phone
With me in my home at the time of the draft
Have a list of players to be drafted submitted
All current players are presumed to have looked over the card(s) for 1973 online or at least looked up stats by draft day. All expansion teams (if any) encouraged to start doing so at once.
There will be one designated draft day per week.
On a designated draft day a strict 5 minute limit will be allowed to make a pick.
If a team misses their pick will be moved to after the next player on the list who will be considered on the clock and allowed to pick. Example Philadelphia misses their pick and Washington is next, Washington is allowed to pick and Philly picks after them
If a team who has been skipped has to be skipped twice their pick can be made any time before the end of the round. Example Washington is scheduled to pick 10th They miss their pick If they figure out who they want they can make a pick or submit a list any time before the end of the round and that pick will be valid.
If a team that has been skipped has not picked by the end of the round then a pick will be made for them by me. Said pick will be the player from your franchise who played the most games that season based on their card. Example: Boston does not pick or submit a list for round 5 I will look at the Roster for the actual 1972 red sox to see who is available. If Billy Conligiliaro has the most games played among unpicked players he will be Boston draft pick. If Boston already has 6 outfielders that will not matter Billy C becomes the pick.
As soon as a round ends there is ten minute period to update rosters and list and confirm players. During that period Draft day trades may be made as per above.
The opening Scheduled draft days will go on for 100 picks. Other scheduled draft days will be 60 picks. Once the number of picks is reached the clock is turned off
The Formal Draft generally begins at either 11 AM or 1 PM EST to give west coast folk the time to be awake. Be aware of that if you are scheduled to pick
BE AWARE THAT EVEN WITH A FIVE MINUTE LIMIT THAT CAN MEAN 100 MINUTES FOR 20 TEAMS TO PICK IN ONE ROUND.
All teams have either 30 players or have dropped out OR
The next formal draft begins
The informal draft resumes after any formal draft that still has teams picking.
Finally be aware that the period from Black Friday till Christmas is the busiest time of the year with my employer and I may have mandatory overtime so the date of the formal draft might be affected.
Also be aware that during world hours (Mon-Fri 7 am-3:30) PM I have no access to the net nor do I own a cell phone if an issue comes up during that time which can’t wait refer it to the assistant commissioner
Important Update: The SF giants and the Oakland A’s switched teams so they have switched their spots in the draft and keeper list as well
If you have any questions not covered here please let me know.
It’s the Dynasty League’s first subway series. Here’s how it got there.
NL League Championship Series
Game 1 at Candlestick Park SF
The Daytraders began the final step on the quest to return to the world series with Roger Nelson on the mound who had gone 2-0 in playoff appearances this season to face lefty Mickey Lolich who like Nelson had begun his season in the Al Alpha division (Baltimore) but unlike Nelson had not yet had a decision in the postseason. The Giants stuck first in the 2nd with Ellie Rodriguez scoring on the Elliot Maddux Triple and Maddux scoring on a wild pitch that followed. The Daytraders answered immediately when with runners on 1st and 3rd (Graig Nettles double, Leo Cardinals single) Nelson excutted a perfect suicide squeeze plating Nettles and getting Cardenas to 2nd. A Steve Brye pinch single sent him to 3rd and Dwayne Josephson hitting for Willie Mays singed him home to tie it up but with 2 on and one out Lolich managed to get Jimmy Winn and Willie Stargell to keep the game tied. In the sixth NY jumped ahead. A one out single to Stargell and a two out walk to Leron Lee put men on 1st & 2nd vs Reliever Ron Bryant (Lolich was pinch hit for in the 4th) set up Graig Nettles who with the runners going singled to center Stargell motored home and Lee went to third where Leo Cardenas surprised everyone by bunting with two outs completely surprising Catcher Rodriguez enough to allow him to beat the throw to 1st and make it 4-2. That lead held till the 8th when Nelson gave up a leadoff single to Rick Monday and a walk to Chris Speier putting two on with none out. Lerrin LaGrow came in to relieve Nelson but put his 2nd pitch too far over the plate and Darrell Evans drove it to deep right. Ken Henderson tried to chase it down but it went over his head plating Monday and Speier to tie the game and put the go ahead run in scoring position with none out. It looked bad for the Brokers but LaGrow overcame his bad start but inducing three consecutive grounders from Bobby Bonds, Harmon Killebrew and Ellie Rodriguez to keep the game tied
Phil Hennigan came in for the giants in the 9th and held things down and managed to get out of a bases loaded one out jam in the 10th on a grounder to 1st with the infield drawn for the first out. Cardines tried again to bunt with two outs but Rodriguez forewarned this time made the play to end the inning. The Daytraders answered with Tom Seaver in the 12th who got both Bonds and Killebrew to start the inning but came too far inside on a fastball to Rodriguez hitting him and putting him on 2nd with two out setting up Garry Maddox who for the 2nd time in the game would drive a ball to center that would roll to the wall and score Rodriguez this time for the extra inning win and giving Seaver his 2nd loss in relief in the postseason.
Game 2 was a battle of Aces as Phil Niekro and Jim Palmer took the mound. Both pitchers would work deep into the game and both would be victimized by errors at first base. The Giants had taken a 1 run lead in the 2nd on a Sac fly by Evans that scored Rick Monday who had doubled to start the inning and moved to 3rd on a grounder. In the fourth Norm Cash misplayed an Evans grounder that put him on first. He went to single on a Bobby Bonds single and scored on another from Harmon Killebrew to make it 2-0 and getting Bonds to 3rd where a Garry Maddox sac fly plated a 2nd unearned run for the giants to make it 3-0. With a 3-0 lead and Palmer on the mound things looked good but Niekro kept the Giants off the board while in the 8th a Stargell leadoff triple gave Cash a chance to atone for his mistake singling him home to cut the lead to two. It looked like it was all over in the 9th when Palmer got Jimmy Wynn for the first out but a grounder to Killerbrew by Wayne Garrett was misplayed putting a man on first and the tying run at the plate with one out. Willie Mays drilled the next pitch down the first base line but Killer made up for his error with a diving stop that turned a sure double into the 2nd out Garrett moving to 2nd. Leron Lee walked and it looked like it was all over when Stargell grounded the next pitch to first but for the 2nd time in the inning Killebrew failed letting the ball go right between his legs. It rolled down the right field line scoring Garrett and sending Stargell to 2nd and Lee to 3rd. Palmer at this point was out of gas and Eddie Watt came into the game to face Ted Simmons with the game on the line. The good news for the Giants was Simmons didn’t hit the ball to Killebrew, the bad news was he drilled it to center Lee scored easily and Stargell rounded 3rd for the go ahead run but Garry Maddux threw a bullet to the plate for the 3rd out and when the Mets failed to capitalize on the Leo Cardenes two out triple in the top of the 9th and LaGrow put down the Giants in the bottom it was off to extra innings again. The Daytraders brought in Steve Carlton in the 10th where he would pitch out of the 2 out two on jam and hold them down till Willie Mays put a two out fastball over the right center wall to put the Stock brokers in the lead in the top of the 12th but a pair of leadoff singles put runners at the corners in the bottom of the inning when Tommie Agee put a ball to the warning track scoring the tying run and just missed ending the game. Again Carlton pitched out of the jam and the game went on until the 14th when Cardenes again bunted his way on off of Dave Giusti with one out. Jimmie Wynn drew a walk and then Jack Brohamer took a breaking ball and sent it rolling to the wall in right clearing the bases and giving Carlton a 2 run lead. That would be enough as lefty in his fifth inning of work would retire the Giants in order to even out the series.
After two exhausting extra inning games the series moved to New York with Tom Seaver hoping to do better in his normal starting role facing Ron Bryant. While his fastball was active striking out 12 he was also a little wild. In the 4th he walked Darrell Evans to start the frame and Harmon Killebrew with out out setting up Johnny Oats who would single to right scoring Evans and sending Killer to 3rd. One out later Dave Cash would double to right easily plating Killebrew and allowing Oates to just beat Stargell’s throw to make it 3-0. When Rick Monday led of the 5th with a solo shot and Garry Maddux scored in the sixth on pitcher Ron Bryant’s singled after his own double it seemed like Tom Terrific was set up for this 3rd playoff loss. The Mets would not break through till the 7th when Eddie Watt would walk pinch hitter Ted Simmons with the bases loaded and two outs but would strike out Leron Lee to end the inning and after 7 it was 5-1 Giants.
Then came the 8th and it all went pear shaped. Watt got Jimmy Wynn for the 1st out and pinch hitter Cash for the 2nd out but gave up a Solo shot to Willie Stargell to make it 5-2 and followed up with singles to Graig Nettles, Leo Cardenas and a walk to Wayne Garrett putting the tying runs on with only one out. Having put on 5 of the 8 men he faced in 2/3 of an inning Dave Giusti came in to try to put out the fire.
He failed. Willie Mays Pinch hit single scored Nettle and Cardenes to make it a 1 run game and after Hitting Ted Simmons to load the bases up Bob Montgomery pinch hit for reliver Jerry Reuss and singled to left. Garrett scored to tie the game and Mays forgetting his age rounded third and just beat the accurate throw to the plate by Rick Monday. The Giants had a shot in the 9th when Darrell Evans hit a two out double off Lerrin LaGrow. With 1st base open the Mets manager put Bonds on 1st risked the go ahead run on 1st rather than facing him and left it for LaGrow to face Killebrew who had already hit two HR in the playoffs. Alas for the Giants he grounded into a fielders choice to give the Daytraders the lead in the series and Giusti his second consecutive loss.

Game 4 at Shea Stadium New York
San Francisco sent Mickey Lolich to face Roger Nelson in game five. It remained a scoreless affair till the fourth when Darrell Evans put a ball over the right field fence for a 1-0 SF lead. It might have been 2-0 but Bobby Bonds drive to center came up just short. The lead held up til the 6th when with two outs Joe Lis would single and go to 2nd on a wild pitch. Duane Josephson came in to hit for Mays and was given 1b intentionally by manager Hazan which would prove costly as Ted Simmons would drive a 2-1 pitch to the gap in left center plating both Lis and Josephson and suddenly it was 2-1. An inning later Steve Brye would hit a pinch single to start the 7th for the brokers and after a Nelson K Leron Lee would put a ball just over the left field fence and NY was up 4-1. In the 8th the Giants answered. Ellie Rodriguez singled to right and after a strikeout to Garry Maddux Dave Cash would triple to center cutting the lead to 4-2 and bringing the tying run up to the plate in Terry Harmon hitting for Lolich. Dave Lemonds came in for Nelson and promptly hit Harmon putting the tying runs on the corners with one out. The Mets manager wasted no time pulling Lemonds and replacing him with Lerrin LaGrow who struck out Gary Matthews and got a grounder from Chris Speier to end the inning and the threat. In the 9th two pitchers put the Giants down in order putting the Daytraders one win away from a return trip to the Series.

Gave 5 at Shea Stadium New York
Jim Palmer took the mound for San Francisco to try to take the series back to the west coast and he didn’t disapoint. He worked seven innings giving up only a single unearned run when Darrell Evans who had homered in the top of the 1st to give SF a 1-0 lead made a throwing error on a Willie Stargell grounder which scored Willie Mays who had walked and took 2nd on a Jimmy Winn walk tying the game at one.
It wouldn’t stay tied for long as Niekro’s 2nd knuckler of the 2nd didn’t knuckle and Harmon Killebrew provided all the power necessary to put it out to left making it 2-1. It would go to 3-1 when Gary Maddux and Dave Cash singled in the top of the 7th putting runners at the corners and Rick Monday flied deep enough to allow Maddux to score but that was a formality as Palmer gave up only two hits over 8 and when John Strohmayer hit the first batter of the 9th to put bring the tying run to the plate, manager Hazan took no chances brining in Eddie Watt would would make up for his poor outing in game 3 by retiring all three men he faced to secure the win and send the series back to the city by the bay.

Game 6 at Candlestick Park San Francisco:
With two chances to win a return ticket to the Big Apple the Daytraders turned to Tom Seaver despite having lost two game and pitching poorly in a 3rd while the Giants entrusted their season to Jim Willoughby who in limited action had been highly effective for San Francisco. Neither manager would be disappointed by their choices. While Seaver would give up a solo shot to Ellie Rodriguez in the 2nd to give the Giants the lead he would give up no more in 9 innings of work giving up only 2 hits and six walks. Meanwhile Willoughby would pitch 8 4 hit innings but two of those hits would come in the top of the 6th with Jimmy Wynn singling to left and Willie Stargell shooting a ball into the gap just beyond the reach of Maddux allowing Wynn to score and tie the game. And tied it would stay until the 11th when Wynn would again lead off an inning with a single. Two outs later Phil Hennigan would hit Norm Cash and Graig Nettles would single to right, the fleet footed Wynn would score and the Daytraders would be up 2-1. Steve Carlton who came in for the 10th would retire Harmon Killebrew and Ellie Rodriguez to start the 11th when the Giants would go all in with Dave Kingman who had gone hitless in the playoffs and hit .186 in this rookie season but had also hit 26 homers to lead the Giants. With everything on the line is was the veteran ace who would win the duel getting Kingman to ground to short and send the Daytraders to their first pennant since 1969.
You don’t get a more classic pitchers duel than game of this series with Cy Young winner Don Wilson facing knuckle baller Wilbur Wood. Both were excellent pitching complete games neither pitcher allowing a hit with runners in scoring position or an earned run. Wilson struck out 9 and walked only two on six hits while Wood struck out six without a base on balls with only three hits surrendered and it seemed like neither hurler would give in until the bottom of the 8th with two outs when American League MVP Bobby Murcer who had 2 of New York’s five hits fouled a ball toward first. With a lefty on the mound and a park which favors pull hitter Milwaukee slugger Earl Williams was playing first and tracked the ball in foul territory only to drop what would have been the 3rd out. Given this reprieve Murcer took the next pitch and deposited it into the left field stands for the only run of the game which was all that would be needed to give the Bronx Bombers the win

Game two at the Polo Grounds New York City
Game 2 didn’t bear a whole lot of resemblance to game one as the offenses came out of the gate early. Milwaukee having been shut out for 11 innings by Yankees pitching jumped on starter Steve Kline in the 3rd. With a man on first and one out Ron Fairly singled to right, Gene Clines who had singled earlier dug for 3rd and former Brewer Pat Kelly throw went wild. Cline scored and Fairly ended up at 2nd, which left a base open for an intentional walk to Pete Rose which proved costly as Earl Williams anxious to atone for his game costing blunder deposited a ball far above the left field wall for a 4-0 Milwaukee lead. In the bottom half of the inning a pair of pinch hitters, Roberto Clemente and Thurman Munson singled with one out and after retiring Reggie Smith Ken Holtzman who had shut out the twins in his previous outing delivered a ball that would have been the 3rd out in any other park but cleared the short left field wall at the Polo grounds to make it a 1 run game 4-3. Both sides held off minor rallies until the 7th when a one out error by Danny Thompson put pitcher Ken Holtzman on first. Ceasar Geronimo pinch hit for Clines and drilled a triple into the gap off of Jack Billingham to plate Holtman and Ron Hunt followed up with a single to plated him to make it 6-3. With Geronimo and Johnny Edwards now in for defense it looked pretty good for Milwaukee and 20 game winner Holtzman. Then came the 8th which started innocently enough with a John Mayberry ground out for the 1st out and then the bottom caved in. Bobby Murcer and Danny Thompson walked and old man Bill Mazeroski shocked everyone with a double into the gap scoring them both. When Roberto Clemente followed with a double of his own the seemingly safe lead was gone and the game tied at six. Milwaukee hurredly got Blue Moon Odem warming and intentionally walked Thurman Munson to buy time. Reggie Smith came up and hit a nubber in front of the plate. The normally solid defender Edwards was slow in getting to it and the speedy Smith was safe at first loading the bases. That brought up Ron Santo who drove in his 4th of the day with a single to center and suddenly it was 7-6 but the Yanks weren’t done yet. Odem walked Oscar Gamble to force in one run and gave up a single to Mayberry to plate another before finally getting the 2nd out on a force play at the plate on a Murcer grounder Santo being out at home, but he then gave up one more single to Danny Thompson scoring two more and another walk to Mazeroski loading the bases before finally getting out of the inning Milwaukee having given up 8 run on seven hits and allowing 14 men to bat. Milwaukee attempted to rally in the 9th on a pair of singles and a two out RBI from Pete Rose but the air was out of the balloon as were their hopes of a series split in the Bronx.
With her series on the line Milwaukee turned to Blue Moon Odem despite his failure in game 2 while the Yanks turned to Bob Moose. The Yanks picked up where they left off with a two run shot in the first to take a 2-0 lead while Milwaukee answered immediately. Geronimo singled to the pitcher and reached 2nd when Moose hurried the throw to first in a vain attempt to nail the speedster. Ron Hunt singled and once again Pete Rose was intentionally walked and once again it burned the Yanks as Ron Fairly also waited out a walk scoring Geronimo. Up came Doug Rader who had hit three grand slams this season. He singled to center scoring Hunt. Pete Rose never hesitated rounding third and heading for the plate but Reggie Smith threw a perfect strike to the plate to nail him and when Ken Berry grounded to 3rd the game was tied after 1.
There it would stay. The Yanks would pull Moose after arm stiffness after is first pitch of the 2nd but it didn’t matter the yanks pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the 3rd stranded a lead off double from Odem in the 4th. Meanwhile Odom stopped Yankees cold managing to draw key double plays when things looked poor. By the 9th the Yanks were on their 5th pitcher and Milwaukee their 2nd but the score remained 2-2 until the 14th when starter Al Downing who was pressed into service in the 10th took the mound for his fifth inning of work. Like Holtzman before him Downing had not giving up a run in his previous start and was now up to this 13th consecutive scoreless playoff inning, but that would change. Clemente singled and was bunted to 2nd. After manager Ingemi called for an intentional walk to Santo to set up the double play Danny Thompson deposited a single to left scoring Clemente and sending Santo to 2nd where he was replaced by pinch runner Oscar Gamble who prompted scored on a Celerino Sanchez single to make it 4-2. Gary Waslewski came in to relieve Downing and k’d pitcher Terry Foster when Reggie Smith came to the plate and drove a ball into left center that would have been a long flyout in NY but in Milwaukee cleared left center with plenty to spare. Suddenly it was 7-2 and despite a couple of singles in the bottom of the inning the Brewers could come no closer.
With their season on the line and every pitcher that had won in their series against the Twins having failed the Brewers turned to hard luck starter Mike Torrez to face Jack Billingham with it all on the line. Torrez pitched seven strong innings giving up but a single run in the 2nd on the Danny Thompson single. Billingham however did better pitching seven shutout innings and when Wilbur Wood came in for the 8th with a 1-0 lead and struck out both Cesar Geronimo and Johnny Edward swinging it looked like the series was over then and there.
It was not, Ron Hunt managed a single to left and Pete Rose singled to center. Gene Clines came in to pinch hit for lefty Ron Fairly and singled in the tying run before Wood coaxed a popout from Doug Rader to keep the score at 1 all. In the bottom of the 9th Milwaukee got two on with two outs and Fred Beene came in and promptly loaded the bases with a walk but with the winning run 90 feet away Roberto Clemente caught up to a ball driven over his head for the 3rd out and once again we were into extra innings. Milwaukee threatened again in the bottom of the 11th with a pair of leadoff singles from Ken Berry and Gene Michael. LIndy McDaniel came in for Beene and Tim Foli hit for Milwaukee Closer Ken Sanders who had kept the Bronx Bombers scoreless and bunted them over to 2nd and third with only one out. Earl Williams then hit a fly ball to center and Ken Berry tagged up dashing for home. For the second time in the game Reggie Smith would throw a strike to the plate and save the game. Jerry Bell would make his first playoff appearance in the top of the 12th and would give up a pinch hit single to Pat Kelly, which was followed by a pinch hit single allowing the speedy Kelly to reach third. With runners at the corners and nobody out and the season on the line Milwaukee was forced to play in with Reggie Smith at the plate who already saving the game for the Yanks twice anxiously swung at the first pitch popping to first for a key out. MVP Bobby Murcer was up next and hit a fly ball to center. With the speedy Pat Kelly at 3rd it was time for Ken Berry’s arm to be tested and it proved to be as solid at Smith as Kelly was a dead duck at the plate and the game would continue tied to the bottom of the 12th. Muercer while failing to deliver the run managed a great running catch to rob Jack Hiatt of a single for Pete Rose’s single came with the bases empty and the game would go to the 13th. For the 2nd inning in a row Bell would put himself in a jam loading the bases with none out on a Ron Santo, walk, a John Mayberry single and a Roberto Clemente walk, but this time there would be no miracle. Thurman Munson would single to left scoring two and while Bell would retire the next 3 in a row Milwaukee would face a bottom of the 13th down two with their season on the line and the bottom of the order up to face Terry Forster who would make short work of them ending the game and the season for the Brew crew and guaranteeing that the World Series trophy would go to New York although WHICH New York team is still in doubt
New York 4 Milwaukee 2 (13 innings) WP Johnson (1-0) LP Bell (0-1) SV Forster (1)
Series 1 at Shea Stadium NY April
Game one would see the 9-12 Daytraders surprising the 15-6 Yankees as Jerry Reuss would pitch six seven strong innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 run while Wilbur Wood would be tagged for 4 runs including three driven in by Leron Lee on a pair of homers in the 3rd and 7th. Leron Legrow would pick up his first save for quashing a bases loaded rally in the 8th and would double in one more run for insurance in the bottom of the 8th for the 6-1 final. In game 2 the yanks would build a 5-0 lead after 7 on a Bobby Murcer grounder driving in Pat Kelly who had tripled and a grand slam by Phil Roof in the 7th. The Daytraders would rally with 3 in the 8th on a Jim Holt sac fly and a Norm Cash Homer and would plate one more off of Closer Terry Forster one a Steve Brye single with one out to make it 5-4 but Forster would get Graig Nettles and Leron Lee on grounders to preserve the win. The Rubber game would go to the Daytraders as Lefty Carlton would after giving up a pair of unearned runs on a passed ball and a throwing error in the 2nd would work a complete game while the Daytraders would get to Bob Moose for a run in the 2nd on a Cardenas single and two more thanks three 5th inning doubles to Steve Carlton, Leron Lee and Ted Simmons for the 3-2 win.
Series 2 at the Polo Grounds New York
The 2nd subway series of the season started well for the Yankees as Steve Kline shut out the daytraders on five hits. Loser Tom Seaver also pitched a complete game and gave up no earned runs but a key two out error by Leo Cardenas on a Kline grounder loaded the bases for Reggie Smith who crushed it for a grand slam in the 2nd and another Cardenas error would put runners on 1st and third allowing Thurman Munson’s grounder to plate the fifth and final run of the game. In game 2 Bob Moose got his revenge on Steve Carlton giving up only one run in seven innings on a Ken Henderson double while Carlton would be tagged for a pair in the first when Santo singled in Reggie Smith and Roberto Clemente hit a ball over the head of Willie Mays that he might have caught up to in 1962 but didn’t have the speed to reach 10 years later. The Bullpen would surrender 4 more in the 8th for the Yanks 6-1 win. Game three would be a rout as the Daytraders would get 11 hits and 9 runs including 2 homers from Willie Stargell and one from Ted Simmons and go 5-13 with RISP while Phil Niekro’s knucker would baffle the Yanks for 8 1/3 innings with only a Danny Thompson grounder in the 2nd producing a run and a lead that would not make it through the top of the 3rd.
Season series 3-3.
This is a tough series to call. The Yankees have an overwhelming offense and solid pitching meanwhile the Daytraders have perhaps the best pitching staff in the majors with Niekro, Carlton and Seaver along with Dave Nelson who has been unbeatable in the playoffs. Given the Yankess sweep of the impressing rotation of Milwaukee you might naturally think they would get the nod here but there is one factor that I think is decisive. Unlike the Brewers they Daytraders have an offense that’s not only nothing to sneeze at but has a lineup of full of pull hitters (Stargell, Lee, Lis, Mays, Wynn, Nettles Cash) that are taylor made for the Polo Grounds and with the short left and right field fences even pull hitters with moderate power like Bob Montgomery and Dwayne Josephson or little Power like Wayne Garrett can go deep with ease. If the Yankess pitchers can keep the ball in the park at home they should have the edge, particualry if you consider their sweep gives them time to adjust their rotation, but with Carlton, Seaver, Niekro and Nelson I think it’s too tough a hill to climb against a team of power hitters who pull the ball. The Yanks will score their runs and win their games but I don’t think they’ll win 4.
