Last Saturday was the feast day of the Apostle of Mercy St. Faustina who was a Polish nun who died at the age of 38 just before the start of World War Two. In her famous diary (you can read it here) she recorded her prayer life and her encounters with Christ, the Blessed Mother and occasionally the enemy and his minions.

There are five shrines to Divine Mercy in the US one in Lombard Illinois, one in Baltimore, One in Chicago, one in Kansas City Missouri, but the National Shrine of Divine Mercy is in Stockbridge Massachusetts near the NY border.

WQPH 89.3 FM Shirley / Fitchburg which hosts my weekly radio show Your Prayer Intentions hosted a bus trip to that shrine on St. Faustina’s feast day last Saturday I attended.

While there I took advantage of the best insurance a person can get for a person or family, perpetual masses.

In addition to a bus load of pilgrims from several parishes in the state and from WQPH we had two priests with us. One Fr. Bob Doughty I interviewed as we were preparing to get on the bus to return. He was in the process of anointing those who wished it and dozens came to him from all the various buses there.

And Father Alex who is from Nigeria who I sat down and spoke with upon our return.

Due to some bus issues it was a short day at the shrine but a fine one. It is very likely that there will be another such trip next year on Oct 4th. If you have an interest in going comment on this post and when things start getting rolling in April I’ll give you a heads up

This month’s indulgence calendar is now available for download. Pete Rose, the first player I drafted in my 1969 Dynasty League and who led my team to a world series that season and to a division title this season (1972) died yesterday so alas he will have to wait till next month to be included.

Remember if you have a family member or friend you want included on next month’s calendar simply leave the person’s name in comments and we’ll be happy to do so and also remember them in prayer on our weekly EWTN radio show Your Prayer Intentions.

It’s the 1st of the Month so it’s indulgence calendar time.

Remember if you have a deceased relative or friend you want included you can either leave the name in comments or post it on the WQPH radio prayer wall here and I’ll get it in next month.

It’s a great devotion and prayer for your loved ones and we don’t charge a cent for it.

I have today off but ended waking up a full hour before my normal work alarm quipped about it on twitter leading to a slightly comical exchange with Wombat from The Other McCain site which ended in this tweet:

I mention this because one of the great things about the Indulgence calendar is that it lists many of the ways one might earn a plenary indulgence which eliminates the need for purgatory.

Of course if one still has attachment to sin the indulgence becomes partial but even a partial indulgence lessens the time in purgatory as it advances the purification of the soul which is the purpose of purgatory to purify souls that are destined for heaven which have not reached the state necessary for entry.

So even if you don’t use the Indulgence calendar for it’s standard purpose take advantage of the list of indulgences and types to earn them for yourself.

Details on how indulgences work are listed there.

Think of it, simply reading scripture for a half hour or more carries a plenary indulgence. That’s the easiest way to get it done next to doing the stations of the cross.
