Time Lord’s have bills to pay too

Was checking out Colin Baker’s blog and found myself empathizing with this paragraph:

If ever I post blogs on this site regularly, you should worry for my well being. It will mean that I have time on my hands and am not working. And not working, while I have two daughters at University and one still at school is, believe me, bad news!

Sometimes people forget that just because someone is on TV they don’t make big money automatically.

Tech Service #4 Router/Wireless setup $79

And now lets detail the wireless service.

So you have a new wireless router and you want to setup that home network without leaving it open to everyone? Are you confused on what cable goes where and what a network key even means? Or do you have a wireless network so open that you provide internet for the whole neighborhood? Let the DaTechguy remotely connect to your system from here in Massachusetts and get it done.

What I will do:

* I will take control of your system
* I will install any needed drivers
* I will step you through the physical connection of the router
* I will set solid security for your system unless you specifically ask for an open or lesser security setting (lesser security is a really bad idea).
* I will set your firewall settings for the network
* I will leave a copy of all your network settings on your system so you can find them if you forget them.
* I will walk you through the install of a usb wireless adapter

——————————————————————–

What I won’t do:

* I won’t clean your system of virus’ or spyware I have a different auction option for that.
* I won’t install service Packs. If I think it is necessary I will DOWNLOAD them and then re-connect once installed.
* I won’t install or uninstall programs
* I won’t setup more than 3 pc on a wireless network without an additional fee
* I won’t setup Macs or pre XP systems on the network
* I won’t setup file shares.
* I will not setup a wireless printer. (I have a printer setup for that).
* If a system has faults that is preventing the network from working that is out of scope.

——————————————————————————-

What I can’t do even if I wanted to:

* I can’t get a system on the network without a wireless card.
* I can’t get a printer to print if no driver exists for the operating system, the work arounds necessary are too iffy.
* I can’t access the setup of your ISP’s modem without the values. (more…)

For some reason this post is missing. So I am re-posting it today.

Continuing my weekly writeup of the tech services I’m offering remotely we get to the Anti-virus service:

Is your system infected with a virus? Are you plagued with popups etc? Let the DaTechguy remotely connect to your system from here in Boston and clean it up.

What I will do:

* I will take control of your system
* I will clean out temp files
* I will update the system
* I will remove virus’ from the system
* I will if necessary install a secondary browser
* I will suggest and if you wish install anti-virus software
* I will suggest ways to avoid virus’s in the future
* If your system can’t be cleaned I will help you reinstall your operating system

——————————————————————–
What I won’t do:

* I won’t guarantee you will not get re-infected since I can’t control what you do with your system after I’m finished with it.
* I won’t establish an internet connection for you if you don’t have one working at the time we start
* I won’t backup your system with this service.
* I won’t install service Pack 2 I will give you the link to the download but the install is up to you.
* I won’t install service pack 3, on occasion I’ve seen problems on systems after the install, you can do it If you want
* On a Vista system I won’t install Service Pack 1. I’ve seen too many issues with it but I will give you the link if you want it.
* I won’t be responsible for any program or device that works differently after cleaning.

——————————————————————————-

If you system meets the following minimums then I can help you if it does not then I can’t.

A high speed internet connect (DSL or better) that is working
A Microsoft based computer running windows XP service Pack 2 or better
At least 256 mb of Ram.

If you don’t know the values on your system on XP right click on MY COMPUTER and choose PROPERTIES or choose SYSTEM in control panel. If you can’t access this info due to a virus I will take that into consideration .

Who is DaTechGuy and why should I give him my money or let him in my system?

I am computer technician from central Massachusetts. I’ve been doing working with computers since programming or support for 20 years. I was one of the original (took the first call) techs at a company called HiWired , which did tech support for Ctrl-Center, Comcast and several other companies. In November 2008 we were all let go so I’m striking out on my own for now.

How are you going to connect to my system?

I will be using a piece of licensed software called LogMeIn Rescue to allow the connection between our systems. Your keyboard and mouse will become my keyboard and mouse and I will do the work as if I was in front of your PC?

How will we start the initial connection?

After receiving payment I will contact you to arrange a time to start the connection via either a code or an e-mail.

What if I can’t get my system connected to yours?

If I can’t establish the connection then I’ll either walk you through the reinstall of your operating system or refund you.

How long will it take?

No way to say for sure depends on the speed of your system and the speed of the tools I use on it.

What if I lose my connection?

The system should re-connect automatically if it doesn’t after a period of time I’ll give you a call or e-mail to arrange to re-connect.

How will I know when you are done?

I will leave a note on your system or send you an e-mail to that effect.

Should I back up my system before this is done?

Very much so if possible see the question below.

At what point do we just re-install?

If after 24 hours I can’t clean the system or the system becomes so unstable that we can’t continue then we will start the reinstall process you will need to provide or acquire the cd’s necessary for this.

Does having an anti-virus mean I won’t get a virus?

Good thing I was not drinking when you asked. Absolutely not, risky user behavior, teenagers, and fraud are the primary causes of infection.

Hey my system is ok, but my parents , brothers, grandparents system is infected, can I buy this as a gift?

Sure, contact me and we will setup the details.

What if I have any questions that you haven’t answered here?

Contact me. My e-mail is da -tech -guy- At — Comcast.net (without the spaces and the dashes trying to beat the spam bots you know)

Can I use my computer while You’re working on it?

Nope.

I have a job interview tomorrow. The big grey beard is now gone so perhaps the extra 10 years it seems to add to me being shed will help.

Also got a letter from somewhere that I interviewed back in December. Was expecting a straight rejection but instead was informed the position was placed on hold. With endowments drying up I expect a lot more of this.

Today is Washington’s Birthday. Powerline reminds us of a person who actually deserved the amazing praise a nation gave him looks like.

Was at the dollar store day before yesterday picked up The Stark Truth a book on the most over and underrated players in Baseball history. It appears to be the best buck I’ve ever spent on a hardcover book.

Today’s sermon at Mass was one of the most solid I’ve heard in a while. It was on how Christianity is the religion of positive affirmation not waffling. You are obliged not to waffle on belief and morality. Christians and Catholics sometimes forget this.

Romano’s Market has finally entered the 21st century as their web site has gone up written by the young lady at the register who is majoring at Com Si at a local college.

Speaking of Romano’s they are getting ready for the annual St. Patrick’s day Corned Beef rush. That little place will go though thousands of pounds of corned beef and they work like dogs to get it all ready.

Next door to Romano’s is the Ole Time Luncheonette. I mentioned this place before, it actually opened it the middle of the power outages and the ice storms. The last three days they have been packed. The two ladies and their husband that run the place are there seven days. Drive 25 miles to get there and work hard. I sure hope this keeps up. They deserve it.

And their Fish and chips is the best in town. Just in time for Lent.

Speaking of Restaurants, one of my favorites the Boarder Bar and Grille in Leominster. I was informed by a friend that their appetizers (with minor exceptions) are half price weekdays between 3-6 p.m. and after 9 p.m. as well. As they are rather filling I think this will be the way we manage to hit the place every now and then with money tight.

Do you know the sound the plastic container of Hershey Syrup makes when my son is trying to squeeze the last bit out is exactly the same as the sound of my cat coughing up a hairball? We never had that problem with the old cans.

This story at Gateway Pundit about Witchcraft being the fastest growing religion in the country reminded me of this quote from the Screwtape letters:

I have high hopes that we shall learn in due time how to emotionalise and mythologise their science to such an extent that what is, in effect, belief in us, (though not under that name) will creep in while the human mind remains closed to the Enemy [God]. The “Life Force,” the worship of sex, and some aspects of Psychoanalysis may here prove useful. If once we can produce our perfect work–the Materialist Magician, the man, not using, but veritably worshipping, what he vaguely calls “Forces” while denying the existence of “spirits”–then the end of the war will be in sight.

My witch friends (and I mean that literally) might dispute this; but a lot of people are making large mistakes that they will regret for the rest of their deaths.

And if you like Screwtape and John Cleese you just have to find his reading of the Screwtape letters on tape. He is perfect in the role. We sampled it on this post. Four of them on youtube here.

Speaking of error not two days after my son decided on Fitchburg State College we were surprised to get a letter from the Bishop of Worcester recommending Anna Maria. In view of my visit I was astounded and have typed a response. I’ll post it in full after it is mailed and received. I will give you a taste:

We were very excited when Sam was accepted at Anna Maria and even more excited when they offered the largest (in dollars) scholarship of any of the nine colleges that have accepted and attempted to recruit him. We looked forward to the visit to the college and felt pleased that it would expand both his faith and his educational horizons.

Then we actually visited the college.

The rest they say is history.

We are coming closer and closer to the opening of the baseball season. We are also two weeks away from the World baseball classic. I think I must be the only guy who thinks the latter is worthwhile.

The Red Sox open against the Devil Rays. Two years ago that wouldn’t be much of a deal. Now this has a chance to grow to a mini-Sox Yankees as these teams just plain don’t like each other.

And wasn’t that series in the playoffs just first rate?

Played a game called In a Pickle. It was cute but I wouldn’t recommend it with 8 as it is rated for 6. It’s not a bad party game but I don’t think I’d buy it.

And I have a bigotry against games that de-emphasize winning in the rules.

I don’t think I will ever get sick of watching Ken Burns series “The Civil War.”

I don’t think I will ever not be sick of reality TV. If I wanted reality I get plenty of it every day.

And finally we’ve had days of the media nonsense attacking the New York Post on a cartoon that has absolutely nothing to do with race. Now the NAACP has gotten involved and are talking real nonsense. There was a time when the NAACP was the one of the most respected organizations in the US. Their hyperbole shows that those days are long gone.
