One of the disadvantages of having a worldview that relies on passion vs things like objective truth and data or having a staff that isn’t fluent in math is that every now and again such a position bites you.

the Washington Post managed to do this with this publication of the following list:

Now I don’t have the time on my hands or the resources of the Washington Post so rather than questioning methodology or asking how they define mass shootings let’s take their data as given and assume that there have been since 1966 166 mass shootings resulting in 1196 deaths.

Now lets take this these figures and do a little math.

2019-1965 = 54 meaning that we are taking about a span of 54 years.

1196 number of deaths / 54 years = 22.1 deaths per year by mass shootings in the United states per year

According to the CDC here are the number of deaths in the US by various causes in 2017

Heart disease: 647,457
Cancer: 599,108
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383
Alzheimer’s disease: 121,404
Diabetes: 83,564
Influenza and Pneumonia: 55,672
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 50,633
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173

Now let’s take a specific cause, how about that most eco-friendly of devices the bicycle: what are the numbers there? Well according this site the number of folks killed on bicycles due to collisions iwth cars in 2017 was 783. a number over 35 times that of the number of people killed in mass shootings according to the Post’s own figures, and remember that’s just deaths on bikes from collisions with cars not deaths from falls or other accidents.

Now let’s look at it another way.

Based on the Washington Post’s own numbers we have averaged 22.1 deaths per year in the US since 1965

22.1 deaths per year by mass shootings / 50 states = .4402 deaths per state per year.

In other words we are averaging less that a single death per state every two years by mass shootings based on the Post’s own stats.

OK now let’s look at this the way the government usually looks at fatalities, deaths per 100,000 citizens

We only have a census every ten years but for the sake of argument this site   estimates the US population in 2017 at 325,980,000 people. So to figure out the death rate of a particular cause it is necessary to divide the total number of deaths by 3259.8 ( 325,980,000/ 3259.8 = 100,000 )

Therefore based on the Washington Post’s own numbers the death rate for the United States by mass shootings based on the average number of mass shooting deaths since 1965 is 22.1 / 3259.8

or

.006779 deaths per 100,000

So according to the Washington Post own stats, the stats that they want to use to get you to pass new restrictions on the 2nd amendment rights, An american is more than five times more likely to die from contracting flesh eating bacteria than to be killed in a mass shooting.

Now I will readily concede that for the family of someone who dies in a mass shooting or from contracting flesh eating bacteria for that matter,  the statistical rarities of these event bring little comfort when mourning a loved ones loss.

But I submit and suggest that the sorrow of those directly affected not withstanding only  an idiot or an opportunist pushes to restrict constitutional rights that Americans have fought and died for from a cause that produces the death rates that the Washington Post own figures support.

Closing thought.  I wonder why they used 1965 as a cutoff?  I’d be interested in seeing the figures from say 1945-1965 and seeing if the rate is much lower from that period compared to the period the post used.

I’ve never seen an issue that has more potential for agreement than the death of Jeffrey Epstein. Both on the left and on the right it seems that everyone assumes it is murder.

At Legal Insurrection they tell of Merkel’s Germany getting ready to go after people to critique migrants online. My thought, you can take the woman out of Communist East Germany but you can’t take the Communist East Germany out of the woman.

Along those lines A co-worker who is from Armenia and whose wife is Polish was talking to me about his trip there recently. He reminded me of something I forgot, namely that just because Soviet control over the eastern bloc was gone it didn’t mean that Soviets and their allies who lived in those countries stopped believing in authoritarian government.

Many years ago Instapundit noted that Wikipedia is not a suitable source for anything remotely controversial. Their decision to pull the page on controversial trans activist Jessica Yaniv likely because it’s of disadvantage to the preferred narrative supports this completely.

Finally I recently purchased the classic 1935 movie Captain Blood which was the launching pad for Errol Flynn and the then 19 year old now 103 year old Olivia de Havilland. I’m surprised at how many scenes I’m seeing for the 1st time that were cut from my VHS copy and hope that de Havilland gets at least a few cents from my purchase as she’s entertained me my entire life.

As you might have figured out from my post here I highly doubt Jeffrey’s Epstein’s death is a suicide.

And as you might have figured out from this post here. People like Joe Scarborough who are suggesting Russia and/or Trump is involved are BSing. They know that Epstein is danger to the Clintons, not Donald Trump

However what might surprise you is this:

While I believe Jeffrey Epstein was murdered I don’t believe that Bill Clinton had anything to do with it, but ironically it’s my opinion that both he and the person who actually ordered the murder he would like people to think he did..

For the person who actually ordered and arranged the murder the reason they would want you to think Bill arranged it is obvious. If people believe it was the Clinton family then they don’t figure it was him (or her, or Joe Biden’s 3rd gender whatever it is).

But the reason why the Clinton’s would WANT folks to suspect this is less so.

Consider this. Bill and Hillary Clinton once had more gravitas than any couple alive. The rich, the famous and the powerful all over the world rushed to throw money at them, to bend the knee to them and the cater to them. Why? because Bill had power and Hillary because it was believed she would soon have that same power.

Since election 2016 however the Clinton’s have fallen far, so far that they had to do a ticketed tour to get money from the rubes because the connected knew there was no return on it and in fact even the rubes willing to give them a buck were few and far between. Few respected them, few felt a need to cultivate them and even fewer feared them.

The Epstein murder/suicide/whatever changes all of this.

Suddenly a lot of people are of the belief that Bill Clinton still had pull, still have gravitas, and still had enough influence to arrange the “suicide” of a federal prisoner under lock and key. And if he can do that, it means that he’s still a player, someone to be respected, feared and maybe even cultivated by the rich and powerful once more.

That is the bread and butter for the Clinton family and ironically not only won’t a denial be believed but a denial or a statement to the effect that he won’t dignify the suggestion with an answer will only reinforce the idea in the minds of many that this is the work of the Clinton family.

The best part? Bill can welcome an investigation because like Trump in the whole Russia business he knows he didn’t do it. So any honest investigation will clear him completely and when one does he can claim aggrieved status which will raise his gravitas with the media and some of the elites even more.

Even better foreign power elites will presume that any investigation that clears him will do so not because he is innocent but because he still has power and if he does have such power, then he is worth cultivating once again.

But even if there is no investigation this whole business makes people consider him a player who is still holding cards and they will act accordingly.

Well all except one person, the one who actually did it.

Well shortly after we made our goal to cover the quote I was given to move the site and pay for a years hosting (thanks all) and authorized the folks who will be our new hots to start the wheels rolling on the move our site rather than just being a pain crashed and burned.

I was told by our current host that the site should be back up within 24 hours, that was 12 hours ago. I’ve been told by our new host who will be also looking to clean things up a bit that they have done nothing that should have brought the site down. IT people at work suspect a hack but I have no evidence to support that theory so I’ll see where things are tomorrow and go from there

Tomorrow I should know more but the are few things more depressing that to have two instalanches wasted on a site that’s down.

——————————–

The only thing crashing worse than my site right now are the Boston Red Sox who were unable to hold a lead against Kansas City on Wednesday. As I write the game is in the top of the 10th but it’s amazing how far the team has fallen in just a few months. But in fairness having lived through 40 years of the curse and having seen them win 4 World Series in 15 years I have a hard time going nuts over a bad season.

In fairness to the Red Sox I did advise them to stand pat. It was good advice as they weren’t going to win anything this year anyways.

I’ve been spending a lot more time on twitter than I usually do lately and I got into an interesting debate yesterday. The Washington Post put up their piece about how it’s up to 2nd amendment supporters to solve the shoootings problem, my suggestion was brief

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

What was really funny was I had been challenged on the idea that armed citizens could stop shootings. Apparently leftists had never heard of such a thing but an instapundit search for “good guy with a gun” produced so many results that I could have tweeted them to the fellow who objected all night.

The real story of course is he never heard of any of those stories because the national media doesn’t consider them newsworthy. See DaTechGuy’s 3rd law of media outrage for why.

(I still think it’s all because of the post Christian era as I said here)
—————————–

Speaking of stories the MSM doesn’t consider newsworthy the small scale cleanup in Baltimore was a great success that impressed residents and apparently pissed off the Editorial page of the Baltimore sun which seems to consider picking up trash in bad neighborhoods racist.

Of course if they really want all that trash gone fast the easiest way is to hold a Tea Party rally there. History tells us that Tea Party members always leave such places cleaner than when they got there.

Finally as the main site is down here is a quick FYI as to what will happen that was about to go up there before everything died.

Assuming the main site goes back up tomorrow the plan is to do the move over the next several weeks and hopefully fix some site issues in the process. Primary posting will be done here and assuming the main site returns tomorrow there will be some text only posts going up there too. There were in fact 3 I was going to schedule when everything blew up.

Some of my writers will be posting here (like Christopher Harper) some at the other site (once it’s back up) and a few may take some time off, but I still have a lot to say so you’ll be seeing me daily hopefully at both sites but at least here till the move. Once the move is done this will again become the backup site until I can convert it into DaTechGuy’s home for retired bloggers.

Update: The site is back up (still with the problems it had before going down) and there is a lesson there about listening to your guardian angel.
