This song has a weird origin.

As regular readers of this blog know I have a thing about parody songs, Over the years I’ve done Joe Biden (We don’t talk about Biden) on the attempts to kill Trump (You don’t kill Trump so easy) and his campaign (What has the Donald ever done for us? ) , on the election of 2020 (Joe Biden’s Magic Ballots) the MSM Trump song ( I’m the MSM I am ) and two original songs ( Suck it up ) and a replacement for Happy Birthday (Hooray you’re not dead!) and a few more that died in the great system crashes that I’m not inclined to spend a day on the wayback machine searching for or that I’ve forgotten.

As you might guess I think of all kinds of songs like that which never see past me singing them while I work.

What you might not guess, but should, is that like all Christians I have sins to deal with and try to get ahead of. When I accidently discovered the existence of St. Myron of Crete and read about him suddenly the words to a song based on the song Taken Care of Business, one of the catchiest tunes there is, popped into my head which became the post I put up on the feast of St. Myron of Crete. The refrain has been my goto move when I’m tempted to sin and so far has proved quite effective since it’s the type of song that tends to earwig you and a song that is a prayer that earwigs you keeps your mind on Christ.

As a rule that bad news to the enemy.

Well a few weeks ago I was at work and for the first time since I had thought of it (long before the post you saw) the St. Myron song refrain was not coming into my head at all. For some reason that was being replaced by the early Elton John Song Philadelphia Freedom which, while excellent, is not highly effective in combating sin. I perceived this as an attempt to distract me from what had been an effective prayer.

At that moment suddenly for no reason at all the thought of St. Augustine of Hippo instantly came to mind along and with Elton’s song in my head I quickly came up with the first verse to a song singing it on the fly as I worked. To my shock when I got to the refrain I found myself completely in tears (while still doing my work) as I said the words. It hits me, reflecting back on that day that the refrain is basically a declaration of faith and hope and love in Christ. As the day went on refrains for multiple saints came to my head. You will see them posted below in the song making it much longer than Elton’s actual song, but it hits me that you could literally had verse after verse of and saint after saint to this song without any loss of effectiveness. In fact anyone who has found Christ while in the darkness or has been led to Christ by Mary could likely come up with their own verse to describe their own life. You’ll note I altered the refrain for a pair of saints due to their particular situation and there is no reason why you couldn’t do the same

So I post the song as is today, I reserve the right to add verses over the years as they come to me. Feel free to grab and and make a verse about yourself if Christ or his mother or a particular saint who has aided you.

[Verse 1] St. Augustine
Augustine was a rollin’ stone, ya know
He’d go out all night
Be drinkin, and find a lady to squeeze him tight

His mother Monica used to pray to the Lord
For his bad ways to change
Augustine answered saying: ‘Make me chaste, but not today’

[Chorus]
He lived that scene till, Jesus offered him freedom
From before he was born, He loved him all that time
Jesus offed freedom from all the sins before him
Gave him peace of mind his life never had

[Post-Chorus]
Jesus offered him freedom, shined on him, he loved him
Shined his light and his sins were soon left behind
Shined his light, He shined his light
He saw the light and he joined the fight!
Jesus he gave him freedom, He loved him
And you too

[Turnaround]

[Verse 2] St Dismas
Dismas was a man who choose to thieve (lived a life of crime)
Operated there within city lines (he choose the city)
He robbed people right in their home
(in the family home)
Broke in late at night (real easy)
‘Til Romans caught him, passed sentence
Sent to be crucified

[Chorus]
But on the cross there he encountered sweet Jesus
He confessed his sins and for his mercy cried
Jesus gave him freedom from all his earthly worries
Said “Today you will be with me in paradise”

[Post-Chorus]
Jesus he gave him freedom, shined on him, He loved him
Shined his light, even as there as he suffered beside
Shined his light, he shined his light
He saw the light, and he joined the fight!
Jesus he gave him freedom, He loved him
And you too

[Turnaround]

[Verse 3] St. Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene was in a bad place.
She had been possessed
Abandoned, shunned by all the rest

Seven demons came made her their host
They dwelt inside, proclaiming:
“You’re ours until you die”

[Chorus]
She had no hope, then Jesus gave her her freedom
He called her name and declared “you are mine”
Jesus gave her freedom and the demons fled before him
Gave her peace of mind the darkness never had

[Post-Chorus]
Jesus gave to her freedom, shined on her, she loved him
Saw his light and she stayed by his cross as he died
Shined his light, He shined his light
So she was first of all to see him rise
Jesus gave to her freedom, He loved her
And you too

[Turnaround]

[Verse 4] St. Andrew Worthers
Andrew Worthers was a worthless priest
He abused his vows
Drank heavy and he slept around (had many kids out of wedlock)

He was suspended then the Sea Beggers came
They captured his town
Their leader sized all the priests around.

[Chorus]
He was to die but then they offered him freedom.
“We’ll spare your life, just deny St. Peter’s crown.”
Jesus gave him strength to remember his true vocation.
With the rope around his neck he turned them down.

[Post-Chorus]
Jesus gave him his freedom, shined on him, he loved him
Shined his light, even though his sins were so bright
Shined his light, He shined his light
He saw the light and choose eternal life!
Jesus he gave him freedom, He loved him
And you too

[Turnaround]

[Post-Chorus]
Jesus offers you freedom, shine on thee, He loves ya
Shines his light, and his mother will help in your plight (the demons fear her ooh)
Shine his light, he’ll shine the light
Shine his light, won’t you see the light?
Jesus will give you freedom, He loves you
Don’t you know his love, yeah?
Don’t you know he loves you?

[Outro]
Yes, he do! (Jesus grant me your freedom) I love you
(Yes, I do! Jesus grant me your freedom) You know that I love you
(Yes, I do! Jesus grant me your freedom) Don’t you know that I love you?
(Yes, I do! Jesus grant me your freedom) Don’t you know that I love you?
(Yes, I do! Jesus grant me your freedom) Don’t you know that I love you?
(Yes, I do! Jesus grant me your freedom) Don’t you know that I love you?
(Yes, I do…)

Yesterday I talked about the mini-series Jonathan and Jesus today I watched it. Several takeaways from Part 1.

I mentioned in yesterday’s piece that Roumie has credits dating back with 2003. He commented that Harold Ramis told him it takes 20 years to be an overnight sensation and at the time he said that wasn’t going to be him. Reality just is.

I was not familiar with Dallas Jenkins previous short from 2013 Once we were slaves (retitled the two thieves) about St. Dismas on the Cross. Jonathan played Jesus in that short and Jenkins thought it be best film portrayal of Christ in film.

And this was five years before the Chosen.

That’s mysterious ways all over.

One of the things that happens in the 1st episode is that Roumie gets to meet the head of one of his favorite bands: “The Killers’ who are apparently one of the biggest rock bands of the 21st century and have been around for 20 years.

I had never heard of them until that moment.

Boy I’m old.

While in Italy they walk along actual Roman Roads dating back to the time of Christ and before.

Those Roman Roads were the internet of their times. They connected people throughout the empire in a way that was not possible previously because it made travel, trade and communication easier.

Those Roman Roads are one of the greatest single inventions in the history of mankind and it was across those roads that Christianity marched through the empire, at a time of general peace which made it possible.

Just a coincidence I’m sure.

If I had to choose the best moment of part one it was the visit with Alice Cooper who while I heard had converted to Christianity didn’t know that his family had been very Christian and that he came back to the faith late in life. He also talked about how he was told that putting his Christianity into his work would end his career, but of course it did not.

His description of what the price of incredible fame is the single best I’ve ever heard:

Fame is really dangerous, I mean, look what it did to Elvis. Here is a good example. If you take anybody and put him in the biggest mansion on the planet and say: ”You can have anything you want, you can have all the woman, you can have all the drugs, you can have food, you can have anything you want, but you can’t leave the mansion.” that person will find a way to kill themselves because they’ve lost the basic freedom be just to live.  Elvis couldn’t go to the movies. Elvis couldn’t play pool, Elvis couldn’t go out for a drive. He was a prisoner of his own fame. He was that big. Michael Jackson. Everybody that achieved that type of fame died early, because it’s so unnatural.

Of course the most important and true thing he said was: ”It’s your relationship with Christ that is the most important thing no matter what situation you’re in.”

He gets it.

When I was a kid in the days before comic books became “woke” DC used to put out a book called Weird War Tales which consisted of short horror/sci-fi stories in a war/battle setting. There was one story that jumped to mind after reading Stacy McCain’s latest post on Ella Dawson.

A GI stationed in England training to be part of the D-Day invasion is absolutely terrified at the prospect dying during the landings. The Devil appears to him and says that he can protect him from death but only on one day. The GI sells his soul screaming “D-Day, don’t let me die on D-Day!” The Devil agrees and departs.

In the landing craft he finds himself supremely confident and when a German MG is pinning down his squad, he, to the shock of everyone else who remembered his fears, rushes forward and takes it out but is riddled to pieces.

As he lay dying the Devil appears and he accuses him of reneging on the deal. The Devil replies that this is not D-Day and as he does the GI overhears two officers standing next discussing a posthumous decoration for him noting that thanks to him, this probing raid in preparation for D-Day was a success.

You see for 30 years condoms have been pointed to as a life saver and pushed as such but as Stacy points out in his article:

Let’s quote her inspirational prose:

“I received the message loud and clear that girls who were sexual, girls who wanted sex, girls who were aggressive and talkative and confident, were those girls. . . .
“I did the bitter calculus of being a teenage girl and decided to embrace my destined and disdained sluttiness. I even made up a superhero identity for myself: Whorella.”

It was not just random coincidence, you see, that she was diagnosed with genital herpes during her junior year at Wesleyan. The law of large numbers and her own ignorance (condoms don’t prevent herpes or HPV) made it more or less inevitable that “Whorella” would catch something.

Stacy is right on the money when concerning the law of large numbers and disease. The more people you have sex with the larger the odds that you will catch something and if you are in a college in a large pool of mostly drunk people hooking up the odds of avoiding VD aren’t good.

There is a more important point than the foolishness of the young and stupid.  It’s even more important than carrying over said stupidity beyond one’s college years, it’s a point that I never tire of making and it has to do with Christianity.

One the the results of the west’s abandonment of the laws of God is the loss of the benefits of said laws, benefits that were meant for the good of those who follow them not for the benefit of God.    (Or do you think that all those rules given by God to the Jewish people about washing hands and vessels millennia before we knew that it was the easiest way to prevent disease was a coincidence?)

God’s rules on sex are very simple.  No sex before marriage and once married no sex outside of marriage, fornication, adultery, homosexuality, open marriages, etc they’re all out.  Now if you’re a fan of sex in general, and lets face if most of us are, or if you’re a fan of  fornication, adultery, homosexuality open marriages etc etc etc in particular you might not like those rules and it’s quite understandable that many rebel against them.

However it doesn’t change the fact that if you follow those rules and your spouse does as well the odds of you catching any venereal disease are as close to zero as you can get and it goes without saying that abstinence from sex outside of marriage for married people is far more effective in preventing AIDS & HIV than the best condom money can or any potential treatment or “cure” that we have spend Billions of dollars trying to find.

Stacy & I both come from a generation that still understood that God’s laws were a shield to protect us, not a yoke to oppress.  Ms Dawson comes from a generation that doesn’t.  That’s why it’s imperative for us to go on the record now so that these basic facts, supported by centuries of experience can survive us.

Oh and pray for Ms. Dawson and folks like her and don’t get too caught up about her mistakes when you do.  Remember the wisdom of Christ in Luke 6:37-38

Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.

Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

PRIMARY SITE UPDATE: You’ll note that there are still a few posts going up on the main site with links videos etc. That’s because before my problems came up I was on a bit of a writing roll and saved pieces with links and video are still working.

The estimate and timetable for moving the site is still not in from my 1st choice but if you want to help defray the costs (I’m guessing $700-1000 but I don’t know for sure) I would highly appreciate it.
