Given that LeBron James (surely speaking for the NBA & MLB) objected to a police officer using deadly force to stop a 15 year old black girl from stabbing anther young black girl I’m sure he can take comfort that no such police interference took place in Cincinnati when another 15 year old black girl was able to stab another young black girl to death without police intervention.
Perhaps he can fund her defense on the grounds that it is the it’s the Inalienable right of a person of color to kill another without society interfering?
I’m a bit of an old fashioned guy. I was always under the impression that both the principles of Western Civilization, the US Constutution and scripture demanded that the persons and property of black americans in their neighborhoods deserved the same protection from violence and crime as any other because to coin a phrase “black lives matter”
The Democrat party did not agree with this principle during the days of slavery and Jim Crow and apparently do not believe it in now. Their Klan and slaveholding ancestors would nod in approval.
It’s stories like this which invariably take place in cities that have been ruled by Democrats for decades (the last GOP mayor of Cincinnati left office in 1971 a year after Brooks Robinson practically single handedly denied the Reds a World Series) that make be wonder if stealing elections has been going on right along in these cities as it seems incredible to me that the black community whose people, business and neighborhoods are the primary target of such crime continue to vote for the people who bring this result.
I’m wondering if states even red state decided to let it go as long as it was confined to the specific cities by tact agreement. If so election 2020 proved that was a large mistake.
Of course that last bit is a bit of speculation on my part. It is entirely possible that the black community having been indoctrinated by critical race theory within its community for decades is in fact of the opinion that they would rather suffer murder mayhem within their community rather than have police of any color enforce laws within them.
Ironically that was the same argument that black kings in Africa used to object when the British Navy by the order of the British government forcibly stopped the international African slave trade.
Some things never change.
Finally this was at Althouse (via Glenn) and I think it really makes the point that I was making in section 3 even better than I did:
But seriously here: Except for a weird one-day thing, Minneapolis has had nothing but Democratic mayors dating back to the early sixties. The City Council (per Wiki), which governs the PD, has 12 Democrats and one Green (and that’s it). The Chief (nominated by the mayor, approved by the City Council) is a Black man who has held the post since 2017, and whom you’d have to guess is not a Republican (not because he’s Black, but because he got the job). And I’d guess you’d have to go way back in time to find a Chief who wasn’t Democrat-leaning.So who hires these cops? Who trains them? Who disciplines them? Who provides their rules of engagement? It’s Democrats all the way down.
Put simply all these horrible things and all this so called “racism” is all taking place under the auspicious of the Democrat party, by people appointed by Democrats to be unleased on the Democrat voters that elected them. I can’t help but think of the line from St. Leonard of Port Maurice famous sermon: “Thy Damnation comes from Thee!”
I submit and suggest that this state of exploitation will continue as a long as the black community continues to tolerate it.
Free speech is under harsh attack in America courtesy of wokeism. Such warnings about free speech are nothing new–but in the past much of the danger has been imagined. For instance I was in college when The Clash released Combat Rock. On the opening track, “Know Your Rights,” Joe Strummer sings of those rights, “all three of them.” The third right is “free speech,” with a caveat. That right could be used if “you’re not dumb enough to actually try it.” Assuming that Strummer was addressing his core audience, American and British youths of the early 1980s, what he said was at best a gross exaggeration.
Not so in 2021.
I received the inspiration for this post by listenening to Ben Shapiro’s December 24 podcast, Goodbye, 2020.
Shapiro is among the many commentators who predict a purge–my word, not his–of dissident voices, meaning conservative ones, on social media such as Twitter, beginning with Donald Trump as soon as he’s not president.
Absurdly, people like Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, still claim that social media is a neutral conduit of information. Twitter for a while prevented the posting and distribution of the New York Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story on the microblogging platform claiming that the laptop details were hacked and illegally obtained. Wrong on both counts. Twitter had no problem with Tweets linking to the New York Times story about Trump’s income tax returns–those returns may have been obtained by hacking. Regardless how those returns were accessed the person who did so broke the law.
What to do?
Forge alliances.
“Well first of all we’re going to have to rely on people, believe or not, who are moderate liberals,” Shapiro said in that podcast, “who are sick of watching the Overton window shut.”
And that means conservative have to defend those liberals who cross the cancel culture.
An incident on Twitter comes to mind. Three years ago in this space I reviewed the documentary XTC-This Is Pop, which was about the spectacular rock back that emerged in England in the late 1970s. That post got a lot of retweets, including one from the XTC Fans Twitter page, run by the now-dissolved group’s former leader, Andy Partridge. A committed liberal, Partridge’s Tweets, although often sarcastic, were entertaining and usually well-thought out, whether it was about music, religion, or politics.
In 2019 some people with too much time on their hands accused Partridge of anti-Semitism after a series of Tweets–not well-thought out this time–about American Middle East policy that devolved into an online shouting match about Israel and religion. Partridge, a strident atheist, went a little too far, I admit, but taken into context with his overall sardonic attitude, those Tweets weren’t a big deal to me. I planned to write a blog post on Marathon Pundit defending him, but then Partridge cancelled himself on Twitter by deleting the XTC Fans account and I moved on to other things.
One of those Twitter accounts Partridge engaged with was “Jon Devin Nunes’ Prostate.”
You know, some people take Twitter too seriously.
Back to Partridge. No one knows why he deleted his account–perhaps he decided that he was spending too much time on social media. He certainly broke a Twitter rule of mine: Never feed online trolls.
I believe if Partridge wasn’t an older white male a Twitter mob would not have bothered to object to those controversial Tweets. For instance the media, with a few exceptions, have not called to task Georgia US Senate candidate Raphael Warnock for his anti-Israel comments.
There will be other efforts to silence dissidents on social media. Mostly against conservatives. But against liberals too.
Conservatism must embrace free speech. And that means relying on for allies, not just the moderate liberals that Shapiro spoke of, but also center-line liberals too in order to fight this crucial battle. And keep in mind no political ideology is always correct.
As for the fundamentalist far-left, the tiny tail wagging the cultural dog these days, I believe they’ve already isolated themselves, as Isaac Asimov said of the 1960s radicals, into a “no-man’s land of the spirit.” Think of the bleating sheep in George Orwell’s Animal Farm.
But right now in the culture wars the far-left is winning.
On the left U of Wisconsin students on the right a black slave
We seem to have a difference of opinion on whether or not Abraham Lincoln was “anti black”.
On one side you have the highly educated Student government of the University of Wisconsin, a prestigious organization at a prestigious University full of students who have paid tens of thousands of dollars to be educated with the knowledge of the ages.
We previously discussed the effort at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to have the famous statue of Abraham Lincoln removed as racist. The student government has now voted unanimously in favor of a resolution that calls for the removal of the Abraham Lincoln statue on campus. The students declared that the president who signed the Emancipation Proclamation, advocated for the 13th Amendment, and led the war against the South and slavery was “not pro-Black”
Well that certainly sounds definite! After all you have a bunch of highly educated people voting on this an not only voting on it agreeing with complete unanimity. And what kind of argument do we have against?
Leaving their squalid houses and their tar-paper shacks, an impenetrable cordon of newly freed blacks followed Lincoln down the rubble-strewn streets, starting with a handful and swelling into a thousand. “Bless the Lord!” they shouted. “The great Messiah! I knowed him as soon as I seed him. He’s in my heart four long years. Come to free his children from bondage. Glory hallelujah.” And Lincoln replied, “You are free. Free as air.” “I know I am free,” answered one old woman, “for I have seen Father Abraham and felt him.”
One of Lincoln’s aides asked the mass to step aside and allow the president to proceed, but to no avail. “After being so many years in the desert without water,” a man said happily, “it is mighty pleasant to be looking at las’ on our spring of life.” Weeping for joy, they strained to touch his hand; dizzy with exultation, they brushed his clothing to see that he was real; fearing that it was only a dream, they wiped their tears to make sure they were in fact looking out upon his face. Moved, Lincoln ignored his bodyguards and waded deeper into the thickening flock.
One black man, overcome by emotion, dropped to his knees, prompting the president to conduct a curbside colloquium on the meaning of emancipation. “Don’t kneel to me,” said the president. “That is not right. You must kneel to God only, and thank Him for the liberty you will enjoy hereafter.”
Well there you have it. Take a good look at that extract. Do you expect to take the opinion of a bunch of uneducated people living in “squalid houses and their tar-paper shacks” living near “rubble strewed streets” who can’t even speak proper English over college educated scholars? Cripes even Lincoln himself notes that he doesn’t deserve any credit saying: “You must kneel to God only and thank Him for the liberty you will enjoy hereafter”
I mean really those college students have the sum of human knowledge at their fingertip while those slaves only knew what they saw in front of them. They didn’t even have phones let alone the internet and we’re supposed to trust their opinion into account on if Lincoln was anti black over these elites just because they happen to be there?
The very idea!
Update: I just remember this clip from Ken Burns Classic The Civil War
That’s how crazy it has gotten. The opinion of the Woke student government of the University of Wisconsin on Abraham Lincoln has no converged with the opinion of Nathan Bedford Forest on Abraham Lincoln whose family didn’t like Lincoln’s name mentioned with one of the early leaders of the KKK.
And people actually mortgaged houses to pay to have their kids taught this.
