I’m sorry but I can’t be the only person in the world who can’t handle the irony of watching and listing to the folks of sports radio and talk all beating their breasts over the Ohtani story just before they reveal their bets sponsored by the official sports book of whatever sport they’re covering at the moment.

I think Pete Rose nailed it

I wonder if draft kings is the official site for Baseball fans to place a bet on how all this ends?

The coach of the Bruins has come out hard against his team’s laxity after a loss against Philly saying bluntly that they aren’t ready for the playoffs.

Mind you this is a Bruins team that is tied for the most points in the NHL, then again last year they had a record setting regular season only to lose their first round series in seven.

I must confess that it has reached the point that if they have a one goal lead or are tied with under two minutes to go I expect them to give up a goal.

I find it one of the oddest things I’ve ever seen in sports

Yesterday the Celtics put their 10 game winning streak on the line against an Atlanta Hawks team that had a dozen players injured and quickly built up a 30 point lead on the Hawk’s home court.

Then managed to squander that lead by the 4th quarter and lose a game that they were favored to win by 12. It’s why you actually play the games.

Now in fairness games like this are going to happen occasionally particularly after a long winning streak and when facing a team with absolutely nothing to lose, but it highlights the problem with sports gambling because ask yourself how many people who lost what seemed a really safe bet are asking themselves if the fix was in?

Am I the only person in the world who appreciates the irony of after letting Brady go and dumping Belichick the first move for the Pats at QB is to sign a guy who was drafted by Bill and Backed up Brady?

In fairness nobody seems to be talking about the Jacoby Brissette signing because they’ve been too busy commenting on a documentary that seems to be all about hitting Belichick.

It’s as if 2001-2018 never happened and the Krafts want to blame Bill for all that’s ever been wrong in the world even though he was the guy who drafted Brady, who kept four QB’s to keep him on the roster, who designated him as the backup and decided to go with him when Bledsoe had healed up. No Bill, no Brady.

But I understand the sports boys wanted to talk about the old stuff, because the new product is likely not going to be all that interesting to watch.

Finally there seems to be a lot of fuss coming about the impending coming of Caitlin Clark to the WNBA. Clark has been filling arenas all over the country and give the possibility that the WNBA team that has he and their opponents might actually draw enough fans to create a team that could be solvent without NBA subsidies.

It appears however that Clark might not be all that welcome as she is guilty of the twin crimes of being both white and straight in a league that is “98% gay” and the idea that she might draw a bunch straight white fans who might swamp the microscopic numbers that the league currently draws seems to horrify the league as well.

It will be interesting to see what she does to the TV numbers because if they shoot up enough the powers that be might decide to lay down the law to the league that currently only exists on the charity and guilt of others.

Finally off to a 7-2 start for my 1972 league. There is a long way to go but as long as Al Downing (0-2) doesn’t pitch ever day for me it’s looking good.

I look at the Redsox lineup for opening day and the first thing I thought to my self was: “This is the lineup of a team that will finish last.”

The 2nd thing that I thought of when I saw the Red Sox Starting Lineup was: What the hell is Raphael Devers doing batting 2nd?

The guy is a power hitter with limited speed who doesn’t walk as much as he should. That’s for 4th or 5th not second. Batting him second is 100 double plays waiting to happen.

There was a lot of fuss on sports talk radio about Chris Sale not pitching opening day. I think it’s foolish for two reasons.

  1. He’s been injured so regularly lately we’re just lucky to have him pitching at all
  2. There is absolutely no reason to believe that the oft injured Chris Sale of 2023 bears any resemblance to the dominating Chris Sale of 2018.

If Sale proves himself an ace again great but anyone expecting this needs to have their head examined.

Speaking of Sale and Devers I’m looking at the 40 man roster and noticed that the two of them are the only two players left from that 2018 World Series Championship team.

Apparently the RedSox have decided to go the Connie Mack route after winning these days.

Lucky for them the Patriots aren’t going anywhere but if the Celtics & or Bruins manage to win titles this year it’s going to make them look even worse.

Finally I noticed the Draft Kings signs above the green monster and if you are listening to any sports radio you know they are constantly pushing the betting lines on the various baseball games.

And here is a press release from MLB

MLB names FanDuel a new official sports betting partner in North America

New Partnership Gives FanDuel National Broadcast Integrations, Expanded Marketing Rights, and Provides Customers the Ability to Watch and Wager on MLB Games Via Sportsbook App and OTT Platform FanDuel+

Ok so now not only is betting on baseball legal but MLB now has an official bettering partner for MLB games.

Given these facts I have one obvious question:

With Baseball Pushing Gambling Everywhere and Having an Official Better Partner How the Hell is Pete Rose Still Permanently Banned from the Game?

While I had no problem with the ban of Rose at the time it makes no sense to continue the ban for gambling 30 years after the fact with the league is pushing gambling on baseball as the greatest thing since sliced bread then it’s time for the leading hitter of all time to be welcomed back into the fold and forgiven before he dies.

If I was Fanduel I’d hire Rose on the spot.

The Brian Flores suit charging systematic racism against the NFL has been the subject of a lot of talk on sports radio and a lot of beating of breasts.

All of this comes from the so called “Rooney Rule” which requires a minority candidate to be interviewed for any coaching position that opens up. This of course creates tokenism and thanks to the accidental Belichick text that Flores received Flores, who is in my opinion and excellent coach, was called up to interview for the Giants job after it was already given to someone else.

This in itself is not a surprise as when you create a rule that encourages “pro-forma” interviews you are going to get them, but whatever you think of Flores charges of racism his charges include in my opinion a much larger and more significant scandal that everyone seems to be passing over.

One of Flores’ charges is that Miami after a bad start offered him a six figure bonus per game lost to improve their draft prospects. To in effect, THROW GAMES.

Flores being a disciple of Bill Belichick and as I noted, an excellent coach an apparently an honorable man didn’t bite and turned his team around so that after a bad start they finished with a winning record just shy of a playoff birth. Miami played spoiler to the Patriots and only missing the playoffs due to a loss to the #1 seed in the conference in the 2nd to last game of the season. When I and the guys who drive into work with me heard he was fired by Miami we were all shocked but if his charge concerning the bounty for lost game is true then it explains a lot.

Given the expansion of sports betting around the nation I can’t think of anything that could be more damaging to the game of football, not even the woke bullshit, then the idea that teams might be directing coaches to lose. This, and not the race angle, should be the real scandal here and I suspect Flores unwillingness to play ball in throwing games is the real reason why he hasn’t gotten a coaching position that he is eminently qualified for.

But because that scandal would be more damming and if investigated if suspect would be discovered to be more prevalent around the league then anyone wants to admit and has the potential to curb the betting that can draw a lot of extra eyes to the games, it will be downplayed or ignored.

Unexpectedly of course.

Closing thought: Why the leagues don’t see what widespread gambling is going to do to the various leagues is beyond me.

but I have to disagree with Stacy a bit. It all depends on who you are playing slots with. My wife used to go with her mother all the time to play slots and it was a social activity for them.

Myself however I’m a craps man, numbers and mathematics and all that.
