I have argued for years that the US needs to control its borders better. We have laws concerning entry, if we don’t enforce said laws then we lose our identity and our sovereignty as a nation.

I have also said that If I was a Mexican national I would of course do my best to enter the US for the sake of my children and grandchildren’s future. What person wouldn’t?

It’s kind of a mafia style thing, the Mobster understands that the risk of capture and arrest are part of the cost of doing business. The illegal immigrant understands that the price of coming illegally is the risk of capture and deportation. I don’t begrudge the person trying to get into the US illegally to improve their lot doing whatever they can to get in but I also expect them not to begrudge me for insisting that the law be enforced and doing my best to keep them out and if caught having them arrested and deported.

With the violence in Mexico the dynamic is changing. Mexico is becoming a war zone where the legitimate government is unable to protect its citizens from murder. Dennis Blair’s opinion not withstanding Mexico is rapidly becoming untenable. Chicago Boys contributor Zenpundit saw this story about Mexican’s seeking asylum and is worried:

An ineffective or inappropriate state response will make this tactic go viral:

This is true but unfortunately due to the corruption and inaction of the Mexican government it is now irrelevant.

When you have a group of people who are given a choice between violating US law and being murdered that is no choice at all. These people are now legitimately fleeing murder and oppression. If they were Cubans there would be no question that they are proper asylum seekers, if they were Hungarians fleeing in 1958 there would be no question.

Even if it means camps set up to process tens of thousands to sort out economic refugees from people in fear of their lives it is not possible for us to in good conscious to send these people to their deaths. It just plain isn’t. I haven’t spent the last 3 months fighting Planned Parenthood to save the unborn to send the born back to the killing fields. To our disgrace we rejected Jews during the Nazi era, we ignored the slaughter in Rwanda, we are not allowed to ignore this.

That doesn’t mean it is all we do, we also have an obligation to aid the Mexican government to fight these murderous bastards. If we think that they are not going to migrate over the border once they have power we are deluding ourselves. And lets not think for one moment that these guys are not going to be aiding and abetting our Islamic foes.

Is it fair? Nope, not fair at all. Is it our fault, nope its the Mexican government’s fault for not bothering to govern. Is it going to be a pain in the read, particularly at a time of economic turmoil? That is an understatement and then some.

Does it matter? Nope. We have to do what must be done, it is our duty as human beings and as a nation.

We are Americans, that’s what we do.

A: Because why should I expect her to enforce federal laws when apparently the elected president doesn’t plan to do so.

The Obama administration will not seek to arrest medical marijuana users and suppliers as long as they conform to state laws, under new policy guidelines to be sent to federal prosecutors Monday.

Two Justice Department officials described the new policy to The Associated Press, saying prosecutors will be told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state laws.

Different opinions on drug laws are legitimate but that’s why you have a congress that can repeal laws and presidents who can sign them.

Then again they don’t have the guts to move on don’t ask don’t tell why should anyone expect them to have the guts to move on this?

Update: At least one D.A. in LA gets it.

Update 2: I am clearly in the minority among my fellows.

This was the letter I sent to the editor of my local paper concerning this article that I blogged about yesterday:

The Bigotry of low expectations

Hello:

I was quite distressed reading today’s paper that our Mayor running for re-election apparently is planning to endorse the count of illegal immigrants in the Census count.

The suggestion that we should aid those disobeying United States law to continue to violate it is troubling enough, but the idea that we will do it in order to for our advantage as a city to increase the share of state and federal funds paid by our fellow tax payers to support said illegality is frankly disgusting and dishonorable.

Our city is rightly proud of our immigrant history. Italians, French, Finns, Irish and Poles are just some who came not asking for accommodation and assistance but in gratitude for the chance of a better live for themselves and their children. All contributed to our city without violating federal laws. Encouraging illegal immigration insults their memory AND a treats a whole race of people as peons to be cared for rather than equals to be accepted as fellow Americans. I can’t think of a more patronizing or bigoted action.

Some don’t want to enforce these laws. Tell me; shall we choose to ignore the fair housing, gun control, labor or minimum wage laws? Perhaps we can ignore the laws on gay marriage? We live in a representative republic, if we do not like the current laws we can elect representatives to modify or repeal them. Selective law enforcement is tyranny.

If a person running for office is unwilling to enforce the laws they will be sworn to uphold, then they should not stand for office. If a public official feels as an act of conscience they can’t enforce the law they should resign. Otherwise it is their duty to uphold the laws of the land. This is part of the series of rights and responsibilities that come hand in hand with a representative republic. If our mayor is unwilling to support federal law she should stand down.

As of this writing I don’t know if it will be run, we will see.

…that is if he wants one:

Community leaders gathered at the Montachusett Regional Planning office on Friday to talk about the importance of reaching the “hard to count” population living in the area, including low-income residents and illegal immigrants, in the upcoming 2010 census.

Oh we are going to count illegals in the census? The story is titled:

Low-income, illegals must be counted, say local leaders

the mayor’s position?

Wong said she, or a representative from her office, will be part of this year’s Complete Census Count Committee, to provide census workers with relevant information on city demographics, in order to be sure as many people as possible are surveyed.

I think it would be very interesting to see if the mayor directly says that illegal immigrants could be counted rather than deported. Mr. Ford the head of the Minority Coalition in Fitchburg reaction was predictable:

“You’re a human being in that town that affects everybody else’s style of living,” said Ford. “It doesn’t make sense not to count them.”

Yes you do effects peoples style of living, you siphon tax dollars and services from local state and federal government that could be used for oh I don’t know Turning on the street lights. There’s are different words you can use to describe illegal actions to secure tax money from taxpayers. The word I’d use is: “fraud”.

We have a large amount of drug dealers and gangs here in Fitchburg too, they also affect people’s style of living. They provide police hours, a desired service, they spend money in hardware stores for spraypaint, perhaps we shouldn’t arrest them either.

At least one Fitchburg pol sees some trouble with this:

(State Rep)DiNatale said asking illegal immigrants to participate in the census in order to increase federal funding for the population creates a bit of a conflict for him.

Someone needs to ask the mayor directly if she supports counting illegals locally, if she says yes then there is a ready made issue for candidate Michael “Fuzzy” Voisine.

Mayor Wong is considered up and coming in the local democratic party. A few months ago I said the following:

Right now I’m leaning toward the incumbent but it isn’t a clear cut choice for me. The Mayor is a highly educated person who has a lot of theory behind her and is a very hard worker, but Fuzzy has the actual practical experience in real life that is vital on the local level.

If this is the sign of what we’ll be seeing as she rises then I guess my vote is becoming more clear but not in the direction it once was.
