Donald Trump surprises me

By the look of things on MSNBC it looks like he blindsided the Miss California pageant people who were expecting something different. Looking at this article from yesterday they were practically salivating at what was to come. Look at yesterday’s press conference:

Does this look like a group of people preparing to lose?

Trump however pointed out that her position was the same as the president as did Miss California after him. The scolding of the media was classic.

It’s nice to know that I can be pleasantly surprised.

Rush points out that they have asked Miss California tougher questions on the issues than they have the president.

Update: The other McCain has pictures and likely a lot more hits than me:

Attaboy, Donald! Imagine that: A guy who thinks a beauty contest ought to be about. . . beauty.

Update 2: Added yesterday’s press conference and commentary will add today’s when I can find it.

Update 3: Can I Vomit right now? HAH! Rush is running with this big.

Update 4: The CNN video didn’t take so here is the link to Hotair that has it.

Update 5: Doug Powers:

I love how Trump used the “progressive” argument to justify his decision to those who claim to be progressives.

It’s actually more than that, the supporters of Gay Marriage have created the perfect spokesperson. It will be a decision they will regret for years.

Update 6: James notices that this controversy has brought at least two people together:

Note: Mom and Dad sat side by side at today’s press conference

Remember they had a very nasty divorce.

Meanwhile Across the Pond has a different view:

Should we be surprised that she doesn’t know what free speech means? That it doesn’t mean that you can say whatever you want wherever you want with no consequences?

Apparently not. She didn’t realize that when she gave an answer that the majority of people in her state, in her country and in the world would agree with, an answer that a mere 10 years ago would be considered the most normal thing in the world, she would be would be vilified attacked and derided by media elites.

But her opponents also didn’t realize that their speech would make her world famous and turn the winner of the Miss USA pageant into the 1919 Cincinnati Reds.

The port stands at your elbow; types something he thought he never would:

Well done, Donald Trump!

The Christian conservative agrees:

I’m not particularly a fan of Donald Trump, but he really shined in his decision to allow Carrie Prejean to retain her crown as Miss California.

It will be interesting to see where she is in a year.

Update 7: Perhaps the people who were so busy worrying about stopping Miss California might worry about the systematic slaughter of gays in Iraq instead? I’d say that was a bigger issue. I wonder if MSNBC and the CBS early show will give that issue the same attention they have given this one? Added R.S. McCain’s quote as well. And is anyone going to ask Mika’s question?

Update 8: Here are the Youtube videos:

and gateway pundit is unimpressed with the Huffpost folks but the most interesting comment is from Big Hollywood about why the president gets a pass:

“Obama. Gay marriage?”

“Robert, don’t be so naive. We all know Obama’s lying through his teeth.”

“About gay marriage?”

“That and being,” he claws quote marks in the air, “a good Christian. Listen, Obama’s a Christian like I’m a Hasid.”

I am floored.

“You’re saying that Democrats assume Obama is lying for political expediency?”

“To get elected, sure. Hey, welcome to the real world.”

I take a deep breath.

“So Cary Prejean is a big fat target—”

“Not fat, my friend, did you see that slamming body?”

“Okay, so she’s a slamming beautiful target because she’s a genuine Christian and sincerely opposes gay marriage whereas Obama gets a pass because, you assume, he’s a liar and an opportunist.”

“You got it.”

“This is okay with you?”

“He got elected didn’t he,

Pretty sad isn’t it?

Update 9: Welcome readers of the Other McCain. I would have greeted you earlier but this is Tuesday which means game night with my old pals from College and high School. Take a peek around. See Dick Cheney’s daughter kick ass outnumbered 3-1 on MSNBC. See both Israeli’s and Arabs upset with the pope. Learn what two generations can do to a republic, get reviews of Doctor Who audios. Get a sample of an entertaining book for conservatives and see how my wife is smarter than Nancy Pelosi.

Final update: The Anchoress gets the last word

but I have to disagree with one thing he says here

If they did not want him to win, they should have quit.

And they should have told the mainstream press.

They are lower than low — meaning below John Edwards.

First of all the mainstream media KNEW about this stuff and didn’t release it so telling them means nothing.

Second if they quit and said something they would have been “disgruntled former employees”

Third of all I think they were telling ole George a line. This is a variant of the we all belonged to the resistance bit. Years later safely out of the way they are trying to protect their own reps. I see Hot air agrees.

Fourthly they even if they are telling the truth (lucky for me I wasn’t drinking what I typed that) they are exactly what John Edwards AND HIS WIFE deserved.

As Mickey Kaus point out all of them including John and Elizabeth Edwards were willing to publicly destroy the reputation of Andrew Young (not the mayor):

You say Hunter had no right to disrupt your marriage. “Women need to have respect for other women.” But during the campaign an aide and friend of John Edwards, Andrew Young, stepped up and claimed paternity of Hunter’s child. Andrew Young has a wife. How do you think she feels about this? How do her children feel about it, and what other kids say about it, when they go to school? Do you really not care if she’s going through whatever she’s going through because she’s playing her part in a lie constructed in service to your husband’s, and your, unstoppable ambition? How are you respecting her and her marriage?

Elizabeth Edwards gets sympathy for her cancer, it’s something we an all relate to, but liars and phonies get cancer too.

These people played the public, Elizabeth Edwards in her desire to see her husband be president was an accomplice and is STILL playing the public for the same reasons to get John ahead.

People call Elizabeth Edwards a victim, I call her a misogynist. She used her sex to manipulate people particularly women to support her husband. Now she is manipulating women and the grand poo bah of women the Oprah to sell books and to sell her husband for her own ends.

If that’s not misogyny I’d like to know what is.

This is one of the least charitable posts I’ve written that didn’t involve murderous Islamic barbarians. I should likely be more forgiving as befits a Catholic but this really gets my goat.

That Theo Epstein is really smart

I must confess I wasn’t a big fan of getting rid of Manny, a first ballot HOF and one of the best hitters in the game. Although a lot of credit goes to Curt Schilling the Sox won two more World Series rings with him than they did with Yaz, Ted, Rice and Lefty Grove combined.

But considering this news I’d say he makes a better choice than me.

David Pinto is all over this. One particular link really is funny as Jose “Whitaker Chambers” Canseco was asked about Manny and drugs last month:

Canseco laughs and offers his theory. A-Rod was exposed only when his name was leaked from a list of 104 major leaguers who in a 2003 test showed up positive for steroids. Because the test was anonymous, those names were not supposed to be made public. But in Canseco’s mind, baseball’s power brokers know who is on it: players he is sure will be seen as toxic if the truth comes out.

He says this, despite the fact that A-Rod isn’t being treated as toxic, nor are other players who were caught up in the steroid scandal but publicly apologized, including Miguel Tejada, starting shortstop for the Houston Astros, and Andy Pettitte, a starting pitcher with the New York Yankees.

Why didn’t Ramirez get a long-term deal? Canseco asks. Why were owners gun-shy about signing arguably the game’s best hitter?

Never mind that Ramirez was asking for a mega-deal at age 36. Or that he was negotiating in a sickly economy, while weighed down by the heavy baggage of a surly reputation. Canseco will have none of it. To Canseco, the drawn-out negotiation, the lack of a long-term deal, the lack of interest all raise red flags, and so he tells the Bovard crowd that Ramirez’s “name is most likely, 90%,” on the list.

Canseco admits later that he has no way of knowing. But it makes sense to him, so he threw it out there — kaboom! — swinging for the fences, still.

Late Saturday, I tracked down Ramirez to tell him what Canseco had said. The immediate response is pure Ramirez: He laughs. Sitting at his locker, he says, “I got no comment, nothing to say about that. What can I say? I don’t even know the guy.”

Now the question comes, Manny is going to lose 7.7 million because of this but without the ‘roids would he have made the millions he already has?

UPDATE: This post got a ton of hits from something called Alpha inventions. I found this post on the subject here. Unfortunately I hit the sack early yesterday so I didn’t catch the hits till this morning but there is a way to test this…

…if you are an actual human coming from Alpha Inventions you can confirm that you are real by picking any one other post, any post at all and clicking on it. If I might suggest pick on from December or January that way it would prove that Alpha inventions is the real thing…

…And of course welcome to the blog take a look around lots to see here.

Arlen Specter Liberal Pet

I’ve always liked dogs and was struck by this story:

Your dog does not love you and other cold-nosed truths

The article goes on to talk about how dogs have evolved and been domesticated and states:

Their attachment is, in fact, “extremely conditional,” Katz said. “They’ll respond to anyone who gives them food and attention. I have a wonderful Labrador retriever who’s very happy here. But if you had hamburger meat on you, she’d gladly go to Chicago with you and never look back.”

I couldn’t help but think of John McCain, Arlen Specter, and the various groups in the liberal coalition.

Lets start with McCain, as long as he fed the media quotes attacking or questioning George Bush he was a darling, Morning shows, evening shows newscasts all sang his praises, democrats cited his support as proof of being reasonable. During his campaign for president as long as he was far enough behind he was liked…

…then he picked Sarah Palin and the possibility that he might actually win happened. He stopped feeding the dog and the dog decided that there was someone else that they loved better.

Arlen Specter has gotten very good press over the years, his willingness to be “bipartisian” has been celebrated as his vote for the bailout was considered courageous by the press. Democrats favorably cited his support as putting country first. When he switched sides he was the media’s darling.

…then he started acting as he always does, suddenly the dog wasn’t being fed, he was the prop so that he could get the voters. The dog walked away and now Specter is being laughed at and ignored.

Black voters rained praise and votes upon Obama. Yet in the last two weeks black children in DC and black farmers were discarded when their food wasn’t needed.

As the reclusive leftist figured out before the election, as opponents of don’t ask don’t tell have discovered, as anti-war activists are discovering, as long as you are feeding the beast the party will love you but once the food isn’t there or needed then the dog will love someone else. To quote our dog story one final time:

“Dogs don’t ‘miss’ you when you go away,” said Katz, whose conclusions are supported by university studies of animal behavior. “They might get anxious and confused, but don’t mistake that for loneliness or mourning. As soon as they find someone else to take care of them, they forget you pretty quickly.”

This is president Obama in particular and the Democratic party. Not only do his promises come with expiration dates, so does his loyalty.

Update: Glenn and hotair find yet another example of the feed the dog bit for the gay lobby:

CHANGE! Obama To Fire His First Gay Arabic Linguist. Good thing we don’t have that homophobic Bush Administration anymore!

I guess the dog doesn’t need feeding from you.
